Salutations all,
I know that there are already several Serpent's Skull PBP games going strong on the boards, but I'm hoping the market isn't tapped out quite yet! If some of you are willing to give an 'old dog' a shot at trying something new, I'm really keen to give this a go.
I'm looking for five players who can commit to regular posting for this game. Core rules and the APG are on the table. Most material from the Companions line and such would also be okay, but please check with me first. No evil alignments, 20 point buy, 2 traits (one a campaign trait from the player's guide), average starting gold for equipment.
This is not a first-come, first-served game. Rather, I am seeking character concepts to review. At a minimum, please provide the race and class that you'd like to play. Note, however, that a more detailed concept will improve your chances! Inclusion of a physical description, personality, background, and motivation for boarding the Jenivere will all go a long way. A fully statted character sheet is not necessary at this time. However, creativity and good characterization are extremely important! Party balance will also play some role in my selections.
I would be willing to hold recruiting open for a few days, but if I find that there are numerous high-quality submissions right off the bat, I reserve the right to close up shop early on. So, if you're interested, don't delay too much.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope there are still some good role-players out there who would like to get in on a compelling Serpent's Skull PBP. Hope to hear from you!
Jon

Hey all! Luckily i saw this recruiting thread few seconds after its posting. I'm playing in a Kingmaker game as a female half elf sorcerer, and have plenty of time to post in another game ( GMT +1 if it is important, i can usually post in the morning-first afternoon )
Haven't a full concept yet, but i would like to try a tanking type, male human or dwarf ; don't know the SK AP, but i guess it is almost jungle exploring, so i think i'll roll a fighter suited for the outdoor or a barbarian. 20 points right ?

Here's my submission for Belias Manroth, a human bard. I'm considering going with the Arcane Duelist variant. I've not played a bard in a long time and want to give it a try.
I would love to get in at the beginning of a game that lasts.
“Now I don’t claim to be a saint, Captain, but I honestly did not know that woman was married. I hid on your ship because I feared for my life. I only have a little money on me – what I had left at the end of a night out- but I’m willing to work off the cost of my passage. I’m an able body and I can sing and play (that instrument) your men confiscated. Please don’t throw me overboard.”
Belias Manroth was surprised that he’d been able to tell the whole story, frankly he was surprised it took this long for him to be discovered at all. Someone else in his situation would have kept talking, kept pushing, but he knew a man like Captain Kovach would make up his own mind and if pushed, pushed back. In this case it was best to plead his case as earnestly and honestly as he could, then await the Captain’s judgment. While waiting, Belias tried to appear contrite yet hopeful, like he respected the Captain and accepted this man’s authority over him. He tried to convey how his gratitude would be genuine and long lasting.
For his part, Captain Kovack took his time deliberating…
Belias is an attractive, young, chelaxian man with strong Azlanti features. He was raised in money and dresses the part. He's not particularly witty, but has a good singing voice and knows how to have a good time.

I think I am leaning toward a human female paladin of Iomedae. Sent as a sort of missionary duty and to spread the word of her patron Iomedae. She will be able to help many with the problems new undeveloped lands hold, e.g. disease, infestation, and the influence of evil. Maybe she was hired as a consultant to one of the other passengers.

Gandal, the Serpent's Skull player's guide can be downloaded for free, so definitely check that out if you haven't already. It will give you enough background to get you going.

I am very interested in this I am thinking of playing a half-orc rouge that comes from a poor background. His name is Uruk Aka. He lived in sandpoint as an outcast trying to obtain a job but was poor growing up after his mother died when he was young and he never knew his father. He was poor and hunting for much of his survival. He felt almost no purpose in life and had a boring life. One day while on the hunt he saw a limping human adventurer struggling to get to the city and limping that dropped a silver ring. He came back and asked her name and she said Valarie Maba. She then ended up collapsing and dieing in in her last words she gave him all of her possessions which in included studed leather armor and a greataxe. She however wanted this ring to go back to her mother and tell her of her death. He asked where and she told him in Bloodcove. This quest he found a sense of purpose in his life and wanted to continue to do things like this. He gave the ring back but did not have much more money to make a return trip. He was skilled at hunting and sneaking around so he decided to try out adventuring out of necessity.
// this is my basic description.

Aeresaria Lunadane (Aeres), aspiring knight in the holy order of the church of Iomedae. In Vigil Aeres grew up with the constant reminder that evil is a persistent threat. Her mother Genevieve was a cleric in many crusades against the Hold of Belkzen. On one of the missions, they rescued a band of mercenaries from an Orc ambush with which many had perished. Among their ranks was a fighter of Chelaxian blood named Serion. After many days of medical care and long conversation, Genevieve and Serion fell in love and were quickly married and with child. Soon after Aeres fourth birthday both her parents returned to the ranks of the crusaders. A few years had passed and Aeres had become quite the swordswoman and took many of the duties around the church as her own. As she slept one night, as her parents were away, Father Amos came to her and broke the devastating news. Her parents were slain in a surprise attack on their camp and only a few had survived. From that day on Aeres was determined to become one of the strongest of the holy order of knights and to make her name she volunteered to escort supplies to the savage lands boarding at Magnimar.
Aeres is a tall, muscular woman. Her Chelaxian blood shows through in her black hair and dark green eyes that almost appear black, the only difference that can be attributed to her mother is her dark tanned skin. If away from the church she is almost always wearing her polished armor and sword at her side, with red linens lined with silver accents.

Almost done with the first concept ; are the "anatomist" and "boarded in cheliax" traits avaible ? the first boosts crit confirm roll, the second add 200gp worth of equip.
Background added :
After causing a “disagreement” with some chelaxian soldiers outside Egorian ( what the hell he knew the lady was an escorted noble ? ) Kreldor had a harsh controversy with the rest of his hunting party, so to avoid further troubles he went his own way, planning of going back to the tribe later . But the escorting soldiers from earlier were not about “letting it go” at all; after causing some tavern brawl around the docks in an attempt to escape, Kreldor saw he will never be going to make it back alone, but neither he wanted to be thrown in Egorian's prisons. Packing up as much stuff as he could while trying to hide, he boarded the Jenivere that was leaving for the Mwangi Expanse. In his mind he associated his disgrace with the nation of Cheliax, so he found himself thinking “Maybe this trip won't go wasted after all”
Kreldor is a male human(Kellid) whose look and personality are modeled on Howard's Conan of Cimmeria. He is going to be of CN alignment, unless other instructions come up.

There's no set time limit. As long as the translation doesn't take terribly long, I'd say you should have no trouble being considered. In fact, it looks to me like you might already have it done (As you mention below).

Uruk's childhood
Uruk does not know or rember where he was born except for some memories of traveling south. He then remembers sandpoint. He worked for Gorvi since he was little pulling up handfuls of garbage. he had a secret spot where he hid garbage and then later collected it after his wage. Gorvi soon found out about this and told Uruk to get out of here and called him a disgrace of an ork what are you a half goblin." Then Uruk lived on the streets and started hunting with the few things he had managed to keep hidden. Uruk kept to himself but when he heard the trouble Gorvi caused he soon went back and took more stuff even before the goblins came. He also caught rats in the streets of the city and other small animals.
I am keeping my background on my mother vague as Uruk does not know much more about that.
Gorvi is half cheliaxian and half orc. He does not know his ork parents.
Also is boarded in Varisa avialable and poverty-stricken.
He thinks wasting things is horrible and should not be encountered. He actually enjoys eating rats even if most others abhor them.

My submission (behind a spoiler tag to save space):
A large man with curly brown hair and beard, he looks like all he needs is a green robe, holly crown, and wine goblet to play the Ghost of Christmas Present. Actually, he's got a wine cup already, and at this moment is gazing sadly at its current empty state. His flushed cheeks are the only indication of the truly prodigious amount of wine he has already consumed. "The last of the Egorian red, alas. You know, this was the hardest part of all...the weather in Sargava is terrible for growing grapes, I've heard. But the *life* there, man! From the meanest worms to the mightiest trees, this--this riotous profusion of life! Colors, scents, sounds and tastes like nothing I could hope to find in a tame place like Westcrown. My Mystery called, and I could not stay in Cheliax...not and stay true to myself.
"And so I am traveling to this wineless wasteland, for the only thing in all the wide world I desire more: The glory of life." He shakes his head sadly as he slowly rises, leaning on the table with both hands to steady himself. "But perhaps...perhaps, if my Mystery is kind to me, there may yet be something drinkable in all that profusion." And smiling at that happy thought, he not-quite-staggers off to bed, humming to himself. Behind him, the wooden table twitches where his hands rested, knocking his abandoned cup to the floor with a clatter.

What class is your proposed character? Barbarian? I didn't see it definitely specified anywhere. In any case, this would be fine to run with.
Also...'Anatomist' is a fine trait choice.
As for 'Boarded in Cheliax'...that's fine too, but from the wording of the trait, I think it important that any equipment so purchased be justified by the phrase "mundane equipment to aid your exploration of the jungle". So some equipment choices may not be approved.
EDIT: Keep in mind, too, that you don't have to make the full character sheet now.

I have no problem with the trait per se, but I do question how well it fits with your character's background. The description seems to imply a character with a mercenary bent, while you stated that Aeres 'volunteered' for escort duty. It seems a little un-paladin like to me.

Count me in, I've been wanting in on Serphant's skull for quite a while!
I have no idea about Golarian geography so not sure how strict you want to be about the trait of where he got on from.
He ran away from the Waterkingdoms after insulting the king by doing things like defacing paintings of the king in his home. He wishes to aspire and travel the world, seeking new thrills and gaining inspiration for his writing as a playwright.

Uruk description stats
Age: 16
height: 6'1"
weight 250 lbs.
Uruk payed for the voyage with the money he obtained from Valarie when she died.
personality: Uruk is a little shy and keeps to himself for the most part. He does not get angry very easily but when he does he is hard to calm down. Uruk is patient from years growing up hunting.
uruk returned the ring in bloodvale and Valaire's mom convinced me to continue adventuring and questing for items as it seemed to end the boredom and loneliness in his life.

Looks like you are still accepting submissions. If so, here is a brief summary...
background summary: Mother died during child birth, Father was a mercenary. Jayden spent most of his youth traveling with his father from one battle to the next. His father died a couple of years ago and on his deathbed, told Jayden that his greatest regret was his life not having much purpose. Having been left a decent sum of money, Jayden traveled the world looking for the purpose his father spoke of. Most recently he has adopted the teachings of Sarenrae and now seeks to bring light to the growing darkness in the world.
boarded in the shackles: Jayden just assisted in the capture of a small gang that was extorting "protection" money from some locals.
Tariro
Whoops! I forgot we roleplayed how we got aboard the ship. The descriptions of whom she saw board might change, but here is the gist of it.
-Why you were drawn to Bloodcove you do not know but something has pulled you towards the town of the pale outlanders. Some here have tried to enslave you but with Dotars timely warnings you have so far managed to evade the slavers chains. How long this run off luck can keep up is however debateable and you have been seeking a way to leave town. You have heard that a ship..one of those strange floating houses the Palefolk use, called the Jenever is leaving soon for the South..perhaps it might be your way out off this cesspit
-So that was the ship. Taking position among a pile of crates Tariro watched the ship from her concealed position. She saw the woman leave the ship with the dangerous Raptor in tow. She had heard of people who made friends of animals, and her best friend was her toad, but to make friends with such a dangerous creature. Her spirit must be strong indeed.
She had to find a way to get on board this vessel. It was much too dangerous here. Only this morning she had been nearly Shanghaied aboard that Orc piloted vessel that pulled out earlier. They said I would be a cook...right probably they meant cooked. A quick taste of flame put them off though. She was also down to only a few coins, though she didn't completely understand their value. But they were much easier to use to buy things than the small sack of pretty stones she had traded for them. And though she didn't mind sneaking around for warm places to sleep, keeping her pony stabled was costing her a fortune.
So how to get the ship to take her aboard, along with a Pony? Just as she was ready to approach the ship to try and bargain or beg herself aboard, she saw a large pale skinned woman approach the ship, and begin booming out demands. Then she saw a small being approach her leaning on a stick for support. "I think I've seen him before" she thinks to herself. "He walks about the city, and scratches on some funny paper with a beautiful red firebird feather".
Maybe I'll watch for a while and see what happens.
-Tariro, not really understanding how this whole thing works, simply joins one of the returning bands of sailors, and walks alongside them onto the ship.
It appears to her that if you want to go on-board you simply do so. The only thing unusual about her approach is the fact she is leading a small grey pony behind her.
-Tariro walks forward presenting her 10 gp. I will help with any healing which needs to be done aboard ship, for passage for my pony...and without waiting for an answer she hands the captain the coins, and begins leading her mount aboard.

It was really the only one that sounded remotely like her to me. Maybe we can tweak it and say she is escorting supplies donated by the church and the extra coin is for travel expenses and donation to towns.
Quariel
I'd be interested in using this character--he was for a SS game that didn't get past the first day. Here are the description and backstory from the profile:
Quariel's most striking feature is his eyes, the large pupils a deep blue which evokes a pool of water. He wears a simple, loose tunic in a matching blue and plain leather pants--clothes practical for ship life. These clothes do not conceal his slight form--even for an elf, Quariel is light, weighing merely 115 pounds despite being nearly six feet tall. A variety of pouches, bandoleers, and interior pockets hold all of his possessions, most notably his two spellbooks. Though he rarely has need of it, his clan spear is never far from his hand.
Quariel has been a great many places in his life, and there are few things he doesn't have at least a passing knowledge of. More than anything, though, he loves life on the water; normally somewhat reserved, he is lively and energetic when given the opportunity to swim or to sail.
As can be seen in his magic, Quariel has a powerful affinity for water, and his travels are a dual effort to experience as many waterways of the world as he can and to seek out and study all kinds of water magic.
Quariel grew up in the seclusion of Kyonin, born to a small riverside clan. His childhood was spent in the water as often as out, and when he was apprenticed to the clan's wizard, he showed remarkable affinity with water magic. The majority of his spells utilize ice or water to achieve their intended effect, whether that effect is sealing a doorway, knocking a target over, or forcing someone to drop their weapon. This affinity was even more apparent when he called his familiar; he bonded with a black river rat who he calls Reeds.
What began as a talent has become the focus of Quariel's studies. Upon completion of his training in the ways of the wizard, he departed Kyonin, the better to research the ways other races and cultures utilize the power of elemental water. His master's parting gift to him was a handmade spellbook with a water rune blazoned on the cover; Quariel records only his favorite spells in this book, keeping others on a variety of ancillary notebooks and scraps of paper. His other signature possession is a unique two-pronged spear used by his clan, a gift from his mother to see him safely through his travels.
Quariel has traveled the northern Inner Sea regions for nearly a decade, acquiring a wealth of experiences and insight into his research. He first traveled south, to the deserts of Qadira, where he harnessed the power of steam. More recently he visited northern lands and augmented his water magic with ice. Most recently he has joined the crew of the Jenivere, a merchant vessel which travels up and down the western coasts, in order to earn passage to distant Sargava, where he hopes to gain new insights into the harnessing of elemental water. While he could have paid for passage, he found the prospect of assisting in the sailing of the ship more appealing and has picked it up quite quickly.
Kyson Chandler
Kyson Chandler ruminated about the impending arrival in Sargava. He hid his excitement behind a slight-scowl as he thought about the discoveries that he might soon be making. The dark-haired Chelaxian man absentmindedly rubbed the stubble along his chin as he consulted the fine map laid out across the table in the commons area of the ship. He had looked at this fine piece of work a thousand times already, but took almost as much pleasure upon viewing it this time as he had the first. It was definitely the work of a master craftsman ... not only a store of knowledge of The Expanse, but also a veritable treasure trove of tips of how to enhance a map. Chandler's dark brows drew together as he focused on some of the details of the lands north of Sargava. He grunted and traced his finger across the area of the chart. He allowed a slight smile to trace his lips as his eyes came up from the precious map and he stared off into the distance, eyes clearly not focused on the ship or out one of the portholes. He murmured to himself, "Soon, I will be making brilliant works of my own ... even more detailed ... and likely uncovering a trinket or two to keep my benefactors happy and their coin flowing."
Kyson is a professional cartographer from Cheliax (from near Egorian) that is coming to Sargava to make his fame, and, perhaps, fortune. By character class he is a ranger (will look at the APG variants tonight). His skills will include all the knowledge skills available as class skills to a ranger, as well as Profession-Cartographer. His Player's Guide Trait will likely be 'boarded in Cheliax.'
Gareth Marcavius
Gareth here is interested, our current serpent skull game fell apart, only got one encounter in. He is a 1st level half orc ranger.
I will try to post some links to Gareth's story too, but long story short, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, went to jail, and was purchased as a slave for the ship.
Here is my Witch from a recently closed SS game, that had just begun the adventure, when it ended.
"H-Hey Tariro, M-Maybe we will a-adventure to-together again!" ;P

If you're still accepting submissions....
Kale Moore
Human Fighter
Kale Moore returns to Sargava as defeated as he'd left it 2 years ago. He didn't have the stomach for the kind of work available in the Shackles. But he had nothing to look forward to in Sargava. He didn't want to go back to the docks. He wondered if Danae had drunk herself to death yet. Or if she may have gone home with the wrong stranger and been murdered. No, she doesn't deserve that. Maybe he'll get back and find that she's shacked up with one of the other dock workers... hmm, hopefully, she's just drunk herself to death.
Kale used to think he was destined for something greater. Now he knows that everyone thinks that when they're young and stupid. He didn't even want that much. Just didn't want to spend his life on the docks like his father. And he'd done it, too. Saved up the money to start the grocery he'd always wanted. But then Arden got sick. Nobody could help his only child, but they were happy to try everything and charge him for it. After Arden passed, Danae couldn't take it and began her shameful carousing. The shop was long closed, and the whispering and snickering behind his back as Danae made her rounds made working on the dock more difficult every day.
Kale had always done well when called upon to defend himself or his friends in fights, and he also exuded a stoic coolness that discouraged a lot of conflicts from escalating. He felt that his tough reputation was deserved and would serve him well in the Shackles. He'd found work easily, but the cruelty and violence of the Shackles disturbed him, even as jaded as he was now. He knew he wouldn't last long there. He survived, but learned and earned little. He wondered how long it would take to save up passage out of Sargava.

Wow, a lot of activity in just one day! Here is the submission for Evelyn Clay.
Wibeke was born in the distant Lands of the Linnorm Kings, in a small community just outside Kalsgard on the shores of the Steaming Sea. The daughter of carpenters, her childhood is filled with memories of construction, warehouses, and close-knit family. Her large stature and quick reflexes led them to believe she was destined to be a warrior in the service of clan and kin. And for the most part, they were right.
The trouble began with her sixteenth birthday. Typicaly seen as the transition into adulthood among the Ulfen, a loud and prolonged argument ensued concerning Wibeke's future in the family business when she announced that she was intent on finding fortune on the high seas. It ended with Wibeke storming out of her clan house, craving space and isolation from the pressures of home. She began with enlisting with the first mercenary company she came across. In her haste, she signed for a tour of duty with a marines company based out of Riddleport that protected merchant shipping on the long route to Korvosa and beyond. Despite a rough start, and the inevitable jokes concerning a barbarian woman on a boat, she quickly adapted to life on the seas. Her acrobatics, sharp senses, and skill in close-quarters combat made her a fine shipboard combatant. After several successful tours of duty, she was promoted to sergeant and given command of her own platoon of marines. Her latest assignment is aboard the Jenivere, bound for distant Eleder.
Normally a friendly but disciplined woman, most note her for her firm fairness in directing her men and lack of guile in her dealings. The rest note her for the fierce temper that flares whenever she is provoked, changing her normally friendly demeanor disturbingly quickly. She finds great satisfaction in maintaining security on-board and secretly looks forward to taking the fight to pirates, though she would never admit that to others.

The short-haired half-elf sat on the cargo crate with a crossbow cocked on her hip and what looked like a stick of jerky hanging out the corner of her mouth. One leg was propped up on the crate, her arm resting on that knee, but the crossbow never wavered in its current pointing at the sky. Idly chewing on the jerky, she eyed anyone who passed by, waiting for the sails that were steadily becoming more and more visible. There was money offered to ensure this cargo got through, and she decided that she could put up with a bit of sea travel for that price.

~Mediogatli, Cheliax~
Bundled onto a ship in the dark of night was not something that commonly happened to her, in fact, it was the first time that it had happened, so in retrospect, it was a novel event. She had never seen a cargo hold before. Too curious to be afraid, she only waited as instructed, and eventually drifted off, lulled by the rocking of the ship. Not entirely clueless, once it was safe to come out of the hold, she made herself useful, concocting beneficial draughts.
She thinks what they really enjoyed was what she did to the ship's rum.

Some people said the taste of dust and dirt from travel would never wash out of your mouth, no matter how many tankards you downed.. The more ground the Mercenary group covered, the more she was finding it to be true. She traded on spell and sword, but of late, she had been a scribe, her dry humor having since modified the saying "The pen is mightier than the (spell and) sword". However, Leave was hers, and the wild frontier was far more than she wanted to see. So instead, she decided to take her leave and visit home-- Taldor. Additionally, to spite the growing truth of that saying about travel, she would do it by sea. Maybe enough salt water would wash the taste of road dust from her mouth.

Odd feelign of someone watching him. Wind blows in alley and then. screeming of high volume is confusing all 4 people. Using this chance, Mark turns and run as fast as possible. Not noticing it himself, the shadows around him are wrapping around him, causing him to literally disappear in the moment, he had took little bit distance from the gang.
Later, in the haven, Mark is gasping and gathering his breath after long running. Thanking god or anyone who had helped him, he sights and then look to gold-pouch he is still holding in his hand.
Skiii, You are promising one! Skiii, I will help you, master! Skiii, You will never be caught or be accused of robbery, as long as I teach you the waz of darkness! Skiii a sudden voice nearby is heard. Mark literally jumps out of his pants and with big eyes looks around to see, what was it. A small creature hangs above him on lamp, upside down and look at him with red eyes... a bat! Skiii, what you say master? Skiii, there is much to learn and to see... Skiii, if you wish, we make a deal! Skiii, can you feel it? The burning inside you! Skiii, can you see, the shadows around you and darkness, it´s warming and protecting you, all this time! You are part of it and it´s part of you, Skiii... looking at Mark, the bat continues The way to learn... is there, in that ship! Board on it and you shall truly come to understand darkness, Skii
Mark is confused and unsure, what is going on... but something made sense, what the bat had said. He always had a knack to be hidden and it seems people had hard time to find him, something happened around him in night... and this feeling, he had never been scared, when the moon was up in the sky. Nevertheless, the gang was still after him and if they found him here, might be better to change place. Why not to board the ship then. However, the promise of learning magic... that was alluring. Oh, how much money I could make with that!
Looking at the bat, Mark nods Yes, sounds like a good thing to me and thus again disappear along the bat to night, heading towards ship on haven.
Sorcerer:
Marc was always... kind of out of concept halfling. Never staying in one place, always moving. He had magical knack to disappear, when he was in trouble or he had pissed too many people off.
He was found by varisian woman and were taken care of her. He had received the training, he had done rituals but well... nothing just never seemed to happen to him, no matter what he tried. Mom, being all fancy and singing most of the time, teached him some useful stuff, which he adopted quite fast, although the tattoos in his bodies didn´t do anything. Some guy from same tribe had said to his mom to give him those fancy markings, but they never made anything. Later gettingf rustrated the way of living and longing for something else, he disappeared one night and left to try his luck in big cities.
Once again, a bar fight happened because provocation here and there, gold pouches disappearing and naturally people blaming each other, while small giggling could have been heard next to door.
Stepping out and weighting gold-pcuches in his hand, Mark was didn´t otice the tall guy and couple of his friend in front of him. Oh, aren´t we lads lucky tonight or what, eh? The halfling seem to be rich... again! grinning and all men now grabbing their daggers, the leader crouches and looks Mark at face Ya know lad, I know for ya just a right place, ya might like. It´s dark, it´s deep and for sure, you won´t be scared for longer than 1 min and everything is fine then

Something happened there, but what? One point, he was surrounded and next point, it was like something was guiding him and by instincts he had run and... something was flowing out of him to shadows.
