After going back and forth on this for awhile, I've decided to try to take the plunge into PbP here on the Paizo boards. As I am currently running Council of Thieves in the real world and Kingmaker as a PbP utterly terrifies me, I settled on Serpent's Skull to give this a go, so now all I need is some players.
First, some ground rules. I've read a lot of PbP threads around here, and it looks very much like the ones that stick around do so for one very specific reason: dedicated, involved players. The ones that don't tend to collapse when someone - sometimes the GM, sometimes the players - disappears for an extended period of time, leaving the game to flounder and then die a slow, painful death. One way or another, I don't want that to happen here. So let me get this out of the way now: I'm going to enforce a pretty strict "post or tossed" rule. I'm looking for players who will commit to posting at least once a day, and if someone disappears without warning for more than a week, I'll find another player to replace them, period. (The same applies to me, for the record - if I disappear for a week without telling you, dump me and find another GM, I'll deserve it.) Souls for Smuggler's Shiv looks to have plenty of ways to shuffle a PC off screen for awhile - or forever - and I won't hesitate to use them. Just to clarify, however, I'm trying to keep people focused on the game, not be a jerk - if you can let me know what's going on, I will be happy to work around things to keep a player in the game. But seriously, don't sign up for this one if you're not willing to stick with it.
Okay, now that that's out of the way, if you're still interested, here's what I think I will be using for character creation and so on. The game will use a 20 point buy, and if it's in a Paizo-produced Pathfinder RPG book, it's legal, as far as character creation options go. (EDIT: I'm sticking with the 7 core races, though, just to clarify. No PCs out of the Bestiary, please.) I haven't decided if I want to use the APG Hero Point rules yet - I'd be interested in input from the players on that one. All characters get two Traits, one of which must be a campaign trait from the Serpent's Skull Player's Guide; the other may be from any Paizo Pathfinder RPG source. If there's something in particular you're hoping to get from a 3.5-era Paizo source, you can ask; I'll approve or deny on a case-by-case basis, but I'd prefer to stick with a Pathfinder-only game, and will likely only give the nod to things that have no reasonable PFRPG equivalent.
I'm looking for no fewer than four and no more than six players, but I will definitely keep a waiting list, in case I need to use the "post or tossed" rule. (I'm hoping I don't.) So... anybody in?

I'd Love to get in on this AP, Quest question though, would it be possible to play the new Magus Class from UM? the class is in play test. It looks really cool. Let me know if thats ok, if not i'll submit a Character with a different class.
Since there's so much about the magus that is still in flux, I would prefer to stay away from it for now. If it's a concept you're really attached to, though, you could make a bard or fighter/wizard and I would let you rebuild once Ultimate Magic actually comes out.

Arctaris |

Squeeks |

I'd be interested in this as well! I did play through an hour long sample of the beginning of the campaign at PaizoCon with James Jacobs, though we did not go into detail at all for those of us that wished to play it later. :) I will put together something of a skill monkey if I can manage it (Rogue or BArd, potentially). Anything special for starting wealth?

Uchendu Kybwa'ka |

I would certainly be interested in this :-)
I have a build for an Inquisitor that I would be interested in trying, but I could also fairly easily re-purpose him as an Oracle or Battle-Cleric if that would be preferred.
He has two potential, inter-linked backgrounds:
One as a disciple of Angazahan, the Ravener King, and the other as a follower of Shimye-Magalla (the Mwangi Gozreh/Desna hybrid).
Mechanically, they are identical.
However, as the years passed, he continued to grow, slowly but surely, until he reached truly massive proportions, even by Bekyar standards. This forced his previous tormentors to grudgingly accept him, and even caught the eye of the tribe’s shaman, who decreed that he had been touched by the spirit of the Ravener King. As a consequence, he was indoctrinated by the shaman into the ranks of the tribe’s holy warriors, as an inquisitor dedicated to Angazhan, stalking the jungle to eliminate threats to the tribe, whether they came from beast or man – and there were plenty of those, as the tribe’s policy of preying upon all of its neighbours for slaves had not earned it any allies…
…as Uchendu learnt to his cost, when, whilst leading a party of warriors on a search for an Ekujae hunting party, they were ambushed by a mixed coalition of humans and elves. Although they fought bravely, and ultimately prevailed despite the ambushers’ superior numbers, it was a pyrrhic victory, for when the dust settled, besides Uchendu only one other warrior survived.
The battered warriors returned to their village, only to discover to their horror that it had been destroyed, the village itself serving as the tribe’s funeral pyre. Uchendu’s companion committed suicide out of shame, at not having been their to defend his home, but Uchendu remained resolute – he saw taking his own life as not being a worthy end to his existence; after all, the strong always survive…
…Grimly, he sorted through the ash, trying to reclaim what he could, before turning his back on the pyre of the life that he had known, determined to make a fresh start somewhere else…
Whilst he does follow the teachings of a Demon Lord, and by no means attempts to keep it a secret, he focuses on the Ravener King’s interest in protecting the jungle, and celebrating strength, more than his inherently evil nature. He does, however, tend to view himself as ‘top dog’ in most situations, although he respects strength in others, typically valuing force of arms the most, although he also acknowledges, and respects, the power of magic as well.
In line with his belief that the strong must survive, Uchendu’s overwhelming goal is to ensure his own continued survival, by whatever means necessary. After that, he values the lives of his allies, as valuable assets, and finally the protection of the jungle as a whole from external forces, as having allies, and a secure base of operations, are both important prerequisites to a stable existence.
It was on one such pilgrimage, whilst Uchendu was still just a young boy, that the tribe was raided by a Bekyar war-party; in one instant, his tranquil life was destroyed forever. When the dust settled, about a quarter of the tribe was dead or missing, and Uchendu was left without any immediate family – his human father had been slaughtered in front of him, attempting to defend his Elven mother, who was kidnapped by the Bekyar slavers.
Uchendu was declared a ward of the tribe, and responsibility for his upbringing fell to the tribe’s shaman. Although the teachings of Shimye-Magalla provided a measure of peace, tranquillity, and stability, Uchendu was drawn more to the tempestuous, unforgiving aspects of nature, and also trained with the tribes warriors, mixing divine power with prowess-at-arms.
He ultimately became one of the tribe’s most zealous defenders, seeking out and neutralising threats to the tribe. In particular, he reserved an especially white-hot hatred for the Bekyar, and the other servitors of the demon lord Angazhan. When he eventually learned the identity of the tribe that had stolen away his mother, he whipped his own tribe into a frenzy, and appealed to his mother’s relatives for aid; when they descended the village, the burnt it to the ground, slaughtering the Bekyar inhabitants, and freeing a number of slaves, including his mother.
With her rescue, he thought the nightmare was over, but then he discovered that he had a half-brother – a depraved half-Bekyar whelp, who had been away from the village at the time of the avenging raid. Once he made sure that his mother was safely ensconced back with the rest of the tribe, he bid them a fond farewell, and left to scour the Mwangi Expanse for the final stain on his family’s honour…
If it were not for the fact that he is on a quest of vengeance, he would probably quite enjoy the chance to explore Mwangi Expanse, revelling in the thrill of discovery whilst he hunts for whatever treasures of forgotten knowledge and lost relics he can find deep in the Jungle.
Like the sea, he can be quite capricious and tempestuous, and he will go to whatever lengths are necessary to achieve his goals. Nonetheless, he is fiercely loyal to those that he considers to be his allies. As such, he is selective about those whom he travels with, but once his trust has been acquired, he defends them to the last.
His loyalty is to his family/allies first, all followers of Shimye-Magalla second, and the Jungle itself third – he really would prefer to have all outsiders removed from the Mwangi Exapnse, but recognises that they have a right to exist, provided they do not prey upon the natives like filthy Bekyar…
I would prefer the Angazhan background, but I am willing to play either.
I am at GMT+10.

There seems quite a lot of interest here. New to PbP but looking for a while to give it a try. As a PFS GM I learned it helps a lot if you have played a game prior to GMing it.
Right now my supcription just went on a pile - so I would leave all books there until actually done. After all - my group hasn't even finished the first book of the Kingmaker.
Possible choices:
Barbarian or Fighter if power is needed
Wizard if magic is needed
A cleric (with some fighting ability) in case healing is missing
I would make up my choice to avoid a tilt too heavily in one direction.
I should be able to post regular (at least once per day). Timing is UK.

i'm a recent convert from 4ed to pathfinder and the pbp forums have caught my eye for some time now and i'd like to give it a shot. i would be able post at least once a day, although my posts would be likely be abit out of sync since i live in sweden (GMT +1, if i'm not mistaken).
maybe i should expand my application with a few brief character concepts as well. the ones bouncing around in my consciousness at the moment are:
* Natalyah Melethiell, an outcast half-elf dex based two weapon ranger
* Talented Thom Thornwood, a charismatic conman and opportunist human rogue with an occational dip into bard levels.
* Harden Quinn, a down on his luck human sword and shield fighter.
background, personality and appearance are semi thought out but nothing that's put to paper yet.
Thank you Strom for the reminder~! =D I'm GMT -9 (Alaska Time)
you're welcome! :)

Here's my story Belias Manroth, a human bard. I've not played a bard in a long time and want to give it a try.
I would love to get in at the beginning of a game that lasts.
[b]“Now I don’t claim to be a saint, Captain, but I honestly did not know that woman was married. I hid on your ship because I feared for my life. I only have a little money on me – what I had left at the end of a night out- but I’m willing to work off the cost of my passage. I’m an able body and I can sing and play (that instrument) your men confiscated. Please don’t throw me overboard.”[b]
Belias Manroth was surprised that he’d been able to tell the whole story, frankly he was surprised it took this long for him to be discovered at all. Someone else in his situation would have kept talking, kept pushing, but he knew a man like Captain Kovach would make up his own mind and if pushed, pushed back. In this case it was best to plead his case as earnestly and honestly as he could, then await the Captain’s judgment. While waiting, Belias tried to appear contrite yet hopeful, like he respected the Captain and accepted this man’s authority over him. He tried to convey how his gratitude would be genuine and long lasting.
For his part, Captain Kovack took his time deliberating…

Interested in playing in this as an Osiriani (Pahmet) Dwarven Ranger, a Ranger concept I was toying with...
Eventually he realized that he wanted to see more of the world beyond the desert. He wanted to meet people of other races and explore other places he read about in books. He set forth on a journey to Sothis and then booked passage to the wondrous city of Absalom. It was in Absalom that Losk first heard of the Pathfinder Society, a group of like minded individuals dedicated to exploration, archaeology, and adventure. Though his initial application was rejected at the Grand Lodge in Absalom, Losk wouldnt give up. He thought his chances for acceptance would be better in a more remote city or settlement. A few weeks later he submitted another application in Bloodcove and became an initiate to the Bonuwat Venture-Captain, Malika Fenn.
After two years of training, Fenn is sending Losk to Eleder to complete his training and receive his confirmation assignment from Venture-Captain Finze Bellaugh instead. The reason for this is that Bloodcove is getting dangerous and its becoming harder for the Pathfinder Society to maintain a low profile with the steady rise in activity of the Aspis Consortium. Malika fears she will have to soon abandon Bloodcove herself, and does not trust sending a message to Finze through usual means with all the Consortium spies about.
Loaning him a Wayfinder, she tasked Losk with carrying the message to Eleder and booked passage for him aboard the "Jenivere".....

Whoa. Okay, that's 11 people. Way, waaaaaay more than I can handle. So, first six it is, and everybody else goes on the waiting list. (I'd try to run two campaigns, but I'm pretty sure my head would explode.) So Solarious, Arctaris, Squeeks, Corerue, Patrik, and Chris Parker, you're in. If I have to replace anybody, I'll start with Uchendu and work down from there.
I'll start a discussion thread, I suppose, and we'll see what we;ve got in terms of characters...

Carpy DM |

This is what you're using as a system, correct?
Bingo.
Also, for the record, I'm in Central Daylight Time, which is, what, GMT -5? I'm not too concerned about time of day posting, though, just as long as everybody posts at least once in a 24 hour period (especially during combats).

Most people usually give it a week or something and go through people's backstories before choosing. It depends though. Generally the "first come, first serve" type don't last long.

From what I have seen, both types don't last long, and I haven't really noticed one type actually doing better than the other. It has more to do with the players than the character histories, I think, but I don't have any way to check on that. Rather than feel like a tinpot dictator, I'm going with random-as-egalitarian theory, and I'll just take it from there. If it turns out I'm wrong, I might try the other way for my next attempt.

true enough, just saying a lot of people might feel left out, but I've done the same. Homebrewing for the first time and seems to be working fine for now.

Carpy DM |

Well... that's a little disappointing. Lost my first player before the game even quite got started.
Luke, if you're still watching, you can bring Uchendu in. We lost the rogue, so an inquisitor would likely be a decent replacement (though trapfinding might become an issue as we go forward). Drop by the discussion thread if you want to join up.

Carpy DM |

Question for anyone still watching this thread: if I were to decide to run another PbP with a different Adventure Path, would any of you be interested? Though the player turnover rate on the first group has been higher than I expected, thus far I am enjoying the experience; I am wary of getting burned out and trying to do too much, but at the same time, I think I could probably handle a second game, and have begun pondering the possibility.
Any potential takers? I haven't really decided which AP it would be, I just know which ones it wouldn't be (Council of Thieves, Kingmaker, or Serpent's Skull). Conversion for the 3.5 era mods might be trickier, but I like that sort of thing, so I'm not overly concerned about it. I'd rather draw from the original pool of replies than ignore you all in favor of a new batch of random people that might leave you all out in the cold again.

Carpy DM |

I'd be interested.
You were one I was thinking of in particular - while I too hope that there is no "need" for you in the other thread, I don't like that you missed out the way you did either. ;)
On further reflection, I'm thinking it would be either Curse of the Crimson Throne or Rise of the Runelords, leaning toward the former, in case that has an impact on anyone's interest one way or the other.

Carpy DM |

I didn't make it to the original thread in time, but I'd be interested if you don't mind me putting my name in...I'm usually a DM, and am not playing in any PbP or RL games at the moment, so I'm always looking for a chance to play.
I'll put you at the end of the list, such as it is - but we'll see how many people are actually interested!

Vil-hatarn |

Vil-hatarn wrote:I didn't make it to the original thread in time, but I'd be interested if you don't mind me putting my name in...I'm usually a DM, and am not playing in any PbP or RL games at the moment, so I'm always looking for a chance to play.I'll put you at the end of the list, such as it is - but we'll see how many people are actually interested!
Cool, thanks! I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Carpy DM |

In order, it would be:
Dax*
overfiend_87
Sunderstone
Aron* (I didn't realize you wanted in on this, by the way, man - I thought you were just offering advice!)
Charisma
J.S.
Me'mori (? Not sure if that was anything other than spectator commenting either)
Vil-hatarn*
Chris Manos*
Jelloarm*
Kozaric*
*have actually said they want to participate
I'm going to let the thread sit for a bit, to see if any of the people further up the list claim a spot, but that's where it stands at the moment. It looks like we wouldn't have both Aron and Jelloarm in the same group, though, since they have opposite AP requirements.

Carpy DM |

Okay. Gonna do this. And it's going to be Crimson Throne. (Sorry, Aron, but that's the one that sounds more fun to me right now...)
So, Dax, Vil-hatarn, Chris Manos, Jelloarm, Kozaric, and Evelyn, if you still want to play, please post in the discussion thread in the next day with a character idea and we'll go from there! If we have some dropouts, I'll do a separate recruitment thread to fill the slot(s).
