I need some suggestions for a monster

i will be running a game soon and i want the players to come across a hoard of treasure, the idea will be that after taking some of the treasure the monster that guards it naturally knows how much he has and if any one takes any of it, on top of that can sense his treasure and knows what direction it has gone and and how far away it is and begins hunting it down and hunting down the ones who have taken it.

what i would like to know is if there is a way for me to do this with existing material or if i need to make my own monster, the characters are level 5

Well, it knows how much there is and where because you say so. That's the easy bit. Now a cool monster!
Take the stats for a demon, devil, elemental, golem... and reskin it to fox your players. Piratecat on enworld made a coin golem using the basic stats from an iron golem. Instead of poison gas it sprayed coins! You could use do something similar, maybe with a Flesh Golem or some sort of swarm - just describing it as the hoard itself animating to attack or whatever.

Alternatively, Spectators make great guardians!

Ever seen the movie "Fallen"?

Make the monster a spirit that pursues those that steal its treasure by possessing animals and humaniods. The spirit would transfer from one body to the other via physical contact. So each time the party incountered it you could always play on the threat that it was possessing one of the PCs. It will continue to hound them until they return all of the stolen treasure.

Another Twist it has to be the original treasure. Not just any 100gps but the exact same one hundered gold coins that were taken.

Hey i could see an entire campainge worked around trying to retreive all of the loot that was stolen and then sold off.


Anything that can cast Locate Object would work. My personal choice would be a Dragon, just because Dragons are cool :)
