Hi everyone. Let me go over the basics. Firstly, I'm not gonna use an DM alias, cause I'm lazy! Well, about aliases.
Second, I'm Amy. I'll be your DM on this trip into darkness. If - and I hope we do - we make it into Paragon tier, there might be extraplanar goodness, but except for that you'll all be in the Underdark the whole game.
Feel free to email me with ideas, concerns, etc. My email is:
For background: You call come from a small city called Gateway. Why is it called that? Because it is one - it's a gateway between the surface and the Underdark. None of you have ever been to the surface - in fact you're all coming of age. The game will start with your coming of age Ceremony, which will be explained in the game thread.
All races can be found here, so play anything you like. Also, note that even if the race you choose normally does not have darkvision, or whatever they call it in 4e, you do. Your family has lived underground long enough where you've developed that.
All characters start with Deep Speech in place of Common. For CB sheets, just leave common in place, we all know what it really is!
So, as for what's allowed: Pretty much everything. Except:
1. No Realms or Eberron backgrounds. (others are allowed); and
2. No Dragonmarks. As a huge Eberron fangirl, I hate them outside of the proper setting for them.
I'm not a big worrier about alignment, and I dislike the 4e system for that anyway, so, don't worry about it. Evil, good, whatever, have fun!
However, for divine character, deities will matter. All divine power source PCs have to choose one, and the choices (and how you RP your patrons ethos) will effect gameplay.
I'm going to try to make the game feel dangerous - the Underdark is not happy and light, but that doesn't mean I'll try and kill any PCs. You might not always have a safe base, however, so think about that with rituals and other things.
Wishlists for loot are good, too.
Backgrounds for characters are nice, but not needed.
For posting, I like Rosey's rules. For pure RP, I'll let you all determine the pace, and for combat, once your turn comes up, you get 24 hours, or I'll DM PC you.
I think that's it for now, questions are welcome, if people have any.

Well, looks like I'll be rewriting my background and a bit of my description then. Of course, the core "wants to get out from under the monastery's thumb" element's still there, but I was thinking at least the non-drow would be from the surface originally.
Also, we have seven people. It would take effort to not fill all the roles.

Instead of a Warden, I'll bring a Drow Paladin of Torog to the table.
However, for divine character, deities will matter. All divine power source PCs have to choose one, and the choices (and how you RP your patrons ethos) will effect gameplay.
For background and RP purposes could my character be a follower of one of the heretical sects detailed in Dungeon 177?
Weeping Rose Heresy
In a bizarre twist on commonly held doctrine, this heretical sect espouses the belief that Torog is a benevolent deity who has taken the torments of world upon his shoulders so that the innocent need not suffer.

Ok, a few things:
Corpus - if you could list gear in the profile that'd be handy if I had to DMPC. Or just the damage you do with each power.
Vernal - Looks good.
Peasant - Sect approved, but see below.
Ovid - Also looks good. The monastery would be small, Gateway's not huge, but that doesn't alter anything you wrote.
One concern is that we have, so far, one Lolth worshiper and one Torog worshiper in the group. While I'm not saying either has to change, that dynamic would lead to complicatons down the road.
For roles we so far have:
Striker: Assassin, Monk
Controller: Wizard
Defender: Paladin, Fighter.

More about Gateway:
Gateway has been a trade city for as long as anyone can recall. It has about 700 residents, and an elected council handles the affairs of the place. It's in a small cavern with river access on one side and tunnel on the other.
The river leads to the surface, and it's where the trade is done. The river empties into an underground lake, and Gateway is on the shores of that lake.
On the other side of the cavern is a tunnel that leads into the underdark. About a half mile from town there is a hill with an old temple on it. No one knows who the temple is dedicated to, but it is where the youth of the city go for thier rite of passage.
The tunnel continues for two miles past the temple, where it splits into three paths - one, the north eastern one, heads into duergar held territory. The center (east) way leads into Drow held areas, and the south east tunnel leads into the wilds, and eventually, to a great underground sea.

"Say, Corpus, how did you come back anyway? I'd hate to see you die again just because you didn't get permission before returning to the mortal coil."
"I didn't come back, not completely. Our dear recently departed Uncle gave me formula that was supposed to prevent death; there were a few 'side effects'. I explained the flaws to his formula just before he died in a tragic accident."

Ok, looks like we have 4 characters ready, 1 paladin on the way, and 2 (or 3 if Ghetto plays), still working.
Role wise:
Defender: Paladin, and Corpus (who can also play striker)
Striker: Ovid
Leader: Vernal
Controller: Malize
I think I may have to work on a branch of the DeWynter Family for you all to run into down the road.
People who are done, work on wishlists as you can. If you have specific items you want, otherwise, I'll just toss things at you in loot and see who grabs them :)

I'll change his patron to Lolth.
*Throws away Church of Lolth religious pamphlet* No way, I think I hear the Raven Queen calling!
After some consideration, I feel that roleplaying a Paladin of Lolth without being a jerk, would be against the ethos of the Spider Queen.

The door is still open if anyone wants to take on a leader. If Ghetto of Graynore have a burning desire, they're very welcome and I'll take back the Assassin persona.
With 8 people, 2 leaders might be good, and I wouldn't mind seeing the Ardent in action. It's your call, though, Rosey :)

"Good choice. Good to know someone here's got some sense."
Added a wishlist. Also, Ghetto's internet went out so he won't be able to play for an indistinct amount of time.

Yeah, saw that in his Ravenloft game thread. Once we get the 7 people ready we'll start and work him in when he gets back on line.

*At Kevaras* "Deities are so last year."
He's an Ardent. Dumb as a post, but super charming.

"Since when did being a jerk stop being a paladin pre-requisite?"
"Come on join the cult, join the family."

"Since when did being a jerk stop being a paladin pre-requisite?"
Probably when the same time they dropped the Lawful Stupid pre-requisite.
"Come on join the cult, join the family."
You of all people should know that it's all fun and games until someone loses a life.

Funnily enough the Raven Queen offers the best health care and funeral services. Whereas with Lolth they just hand you a weapon and say, "Dental!? Here you can have all the teeth you want!"
"Also, she doesn't care what you do as long as you die on time. What more can you ask for in a god?"

That reminds me, I received a sending from one Morgan Proctor:
Re: Corpus DeWynter
Please inform Mr DeWynter that if he completes his death transaction without filing a suicide and/or falling accident permit, he will be posthumously deleveled.

*sarcasticly singing as he begins cooking diner.*
In the timbers to fennario, the wolves are running round,
The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet ’neath the ground.
Don’t murder me, I beg of you, don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
I sat down to my supper, ’twas a bottle of red whisky,
I said my prayers and went to bed, that’s the last they saw of me.
Don’t murder me, I beg of you, don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
When I awoke, the dire wolf, six hundred pounds of sin,
Was grinning at my window, all I said was come on in.
Don’t murder me, I beg of you, don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
The wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game.
I cut my deck to the queen of spades, but the cards were all the same.
Don’t murder me, I beg of you, don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
In the backwash of fennario, the black and bloody mire,
The dire wolf collects his dues, while the boys sing ’round the fire.
Don’t murder me, I beg of you, don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
No, no, no don’t murder me. I beg of you,
Don’t murder me. please, don’t murder me.
