Thanks to a very generous fellow poster here I have a copy of this hard to find product, but you do realize there's still a strong demand for this OOP product, which could bring in wads of cash. I don't think the people who bought the original would fault you for reprinting it.

Hell, you could probably make even more money by converting it to PFRPG rules. Sort of, you know, like you're doing w/ Slumbering Tsar ;-)

I'd buy that for a dollar!! I have the original in all it's glory and I am getting ready to run a online game with d20pro that starts with Wizards Amulet to Crucible of Freya to Tomb of Absythor to Rappan Athuk.

A Pathfinderized Rappan Athuk would be sweet.

+1, I could see paying $200 for a product, but not 750. That's a Mortgage payment. And while the Hermitage isn't as big as Rappan Athuk, I can live in the Hermitage, not so much in the box ;-)

Yes; but not signed and numbered, and more expensive. Also, it might be missing a chapter off the subscription....

I already priced and figured out the printing through lightningpress to do the hardcovers. All prices do NOT include shipping. Too many fans in the UK, Finland and Western Australia to set a price for a 800 page book.

Only the subscriptions get the hardcover limited edition; signed and numbered by me and Greg. Extra hardcovers are still $125 each until I close subscriptions. Ping me if you want several and maybe we can work something out.

If there are extras (yes I am printing several extras) they will go to the first "X" people that order all of the loose chapters DIRECTLY FROM MY WEBSITE (not DTRPG, not at Paizo, just from me). After that, the hardcovers are going to cost a lot more, since printing 1 costs a fortune and printing 200-300 costs a lot less per unit. I am going to discontinue the $125 soon (after Gencon).

Pdfs are sold 3 ways (me, paizo, dtrpg). POD softcovers of each chapter will be sold at DTRPG for about 12 or 13 bucks for each chapter starting in August I am told (by DTRPG).

Oh yeah, since Lisa Stevens spilled the beans at Paizocon, the Limited Eds get an extra chapter otherwise unavailable...but I haven't even announced that on my site yet. After the subscription copies go away, so does the bonus chapter, forever, and its not in the pdf set. I did the same thing w/ Rappan Athuk Reloaded...I should probably have reprinted it, but did not because I said it was a limited edition.

Understood. However, for various reasons, I don't want the subscription and unless the standalone HC is at least $100 or more over the subscription HC (not including s/h), I can more than afford to wait for the standalone.

Thanks, though, for the breakdown and concern on the cost.

I certainly wouldn't. It's a great adventure and should be used to torment as many players as inhumanly possible. If you don't number the reprints then it shouldn't step on the toes of those of us who bought it already..

All of us subscribers thank you for forcing the FrogGod's hand by mentioning this extra chapter. (Though I think he was planning on doing it anyway.)

As a side note - why is there a Xorn named Richard Pett "No" ing in this thread? Did someone not tell him he still has time to subscribe? Not very much time left now, though.

What's Nick Logue wanting to know about the artwork...oh wait, that's not Nick Logue; it's just his avatar. That's actually artist extraordinaire James Keegan who is providing all of the new art for The Slumbering TsarSaga. Hi James! It's looking good. Can't wait to see final version of the tar pits!

Seriously though. It is good stuff. I think the howling abomination at the beginning of ST2 is one of the coolest pictures I've seen in awhile.

We're loving it, James. Keep it up.

Not oop---ok, fair enough. I don't necessarily want to restrict content, but I doubt the pdfs will sell for $800 on ebay anytime soon. The collector set needs to have their day too:)

The Exchange

Not to revive a thread four weeks later, but....

Now that we've got the first three parts of this released, let's discuss running it.

Anybody who's already started running the Slumbering Tsar Saga in Pathfinder? What setting did you use? Any lead-in adventures or did you start with freshly-made 7th level adventurers?

I'm thinking about modifying the Skinsaw Murders to serve as a lead in to this. I'll definitely be setting it in Golarion, albeit with a modified pantheon to include a few essential Necromancer/Frog God deities.

Still looking for players who are experienced enough to be up to the challenge, but not overly serious enough that they can't handle the occasional (or frequent (-:< ) character death. Sigh....

I'm glad you did. In fact I've been waiting for some actual game play discussion to start. As far as I know, I and my players are the only human beings to have ever played any of this (I'm sure others have, I just haven't heard about it).

Well, I used Necromancer Games' Tomb of Abysthor as the lead-in to reach 7th level for my players. However, you'd have to adapt it to Golarion as well. Skinsaw I think works very well, especially if you can work the cult into the whole Orcus schpeal somehow (Orcus and Norgorber are buds?) as a nice link to the disciples of Orcus. You could even set the thing in the Cinderlands somewhere and tie it into the early days of Korvosa's settlement when all the warring was going on for instance. Maybe some of the Shoanti were in league with Tsar for instance...or vice versa witht he Korvosans.

You've got the whole slumbering Thassilonian thing to build on as well which actually fits the time line quite well with the deep backstory of Tsar. Thassilon falls 10,000 years ago. Check out the Orcus quote on page 4 of ST1. That date has signifiance to the adventure.

Contributor

For some time now, I’ve been trying not to flip through the first part of slumbering tsar which Vaughn, rather unpleasantly it has to be said, snuck into my inbox to gloat that he’d written a mega adventure.

Well, I’m not going to praise it, that’s for sure.

Spoiler:
So the campaign areas are well written and could lead to hours of great role-playing, and action begins in the suitably vile Camp with its host of hooks and NPCs, which alone has huge play potential. The design gives incredible freedom with lots of possible double cross and a wealth of cool, well-motivated NPCs, and OK the Ashen Waste is like a World War 1 battlefield that has been bred with some cthulhu madness. There are hosts of great event ideas and a place called the Chaos Rift, and another called the Boiling Lands which are filled with bubbling morass and geysers and all the dark horrors you’d expect of a volcano-torn landscape. The vast battlefields are a nice touch, and they like many other areas, are worthy of whole adventures in their own right and the adventure draws to a fine conclusion making you want more.

Yes the NPC stat blocks are very handy in their own section of the book to print out separately and there’s a wealth of great new monsters and magic and ideas that are splendid.

Slumbering Tsar is just another typical vaughan adventure.

Ok, Greg mentioned this product and provided this link. He said it was a mega adventure.

What I'm curious about is what does my money (looking to be 125 dollars) buy? Is this a set of books, a compiled sourcebook, does it come all at once or in parts, when is it expected to come?

I'm more than willing to preorder Frog God products because they have my trust, but I'm not entirely sure what this is, so I want to find out before I buy.

Your 125$ buys you one big ole compiled sourcebook, bigger that ToHC probably by 200 pages or more probably, with extra stuff that you will not get if you buy each part individually.

Each part is coming individually in PDF and print format and if you buy the subscription you get access to each books PDF when they are individually released.

It still has a little longer to go as Greg had just finished part 10 out of 14 parts. Not sure on a date.

Frog God Games

What Bigkilla said.

The $125 subscription gets you access to the pdfs of the 14 chapters as they come out (10 have been released so far with 4 more to go--11 should be out next month) plus the big ol' combined hardback of all of it at the end (signed by Bill and myself and with some additional subscription-only bonus material)

Or you can just buy the big ol' hardback by itself when it comes out (but with no bonus content and no pdfs as they are released).

Or you can buy the individual soft covers of the chapters that should get you the pdfs as well but no big hardback and non bonus content).

So the subscription is really the best way to go, but we try to make it as conventient as possible for folks with other options as well. I hope you like it! :-)

I actually stumbled on slumbering tsar at just the right time, i just finished my current campaign, and was looking for something different. The story sounds very interesting and the fact that it starts above 1st level is very appealing to me and my group. I will be picking this up soon in the configuration I find works best for me. I am thinking the subscription plus the first 3 books in soft cover so i can get started while I wait for the big one.

I've only received the 1st 8 pdfs. Looks like I need to head over to FGG and find out how to get #9 & 10.

So access to pdfs 1-10 now, plus the others when they are done, plus a huge compilation book at some near/far point in the future afterwards? No doubt with the superstitch binding that was so prominently mentioned in the Tome of Horrors thread?

If that's a yes, you've got yourself my money.

Signed up for the subscription the other night. Downloaded the first 10 adventures (which I noticed kept getting longer and longer!). Just ordered a cool Orcus mini off of the Reaper site (think I'll paint him in more corpse like colors than his red incarnation). My ToH should be arriving any day now. I think I'm about ready to TPK some PCs. And I'm going to TPK them so hard that their back-up characters will start in the negative hit points!

Yeah, reading through Tsar has been an absolute pleasure.

My only concern is that there's so much great stuff there that I hope I can do it justice when I finally run it.
