This should be simple...

(Heavens Mystery, from the APG playtest, p.24)

Final Revelation: Upon achieving 20th level, your
rapport with the heavens grants you perfect harmony with
the universe. You receive a bonus on all saving throws
equal to your Charisma modifier. You automatically
stabilize if you are below 0 hit points, are immune to
fear effects, and automatically confirm all critical hits.
Should you die, you are reborn 3 days later in the form of
a star child, who matures over the course of 7 days (treat
as the reincarnate spell).

So...what the hell is a Star Child?

See Clarke's 2001.

Are the stats anywhere though? I can kinda guess what it is, but I have no idea if your racial stats will change...

Star child isn't a race, it's a state of being. Like the ability says, treat it as a reincarnation -- ie, roll on the chart.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

As synonyms go, there's the star spawn, which are basically illithid with wings :P

Hmm, sounds reasonable. It is still a little vague though...IMO not a good idea to put an obscure but clever joke into a rulebook.

Seems simple enough, but still a little vague. IMO not a good idea to put an obscure yet clever joke into a rulebook.

I understood that to mean that you change your race into a Star Child, similar to how the reincarnate spell works (race changes, but star child is picked for you instead of rolling on a chart).

It's not that clear, and in fact the verbiage makes it sound like a star child is a specific thing, not just "roll d100 and see what you get".

I hope it's clearer in the final print.

You are reborn 3 days later - and then mature (over 7 days) into...????? roll d100.

You are reborn in the form of a Star Child who matures over 7 days. The treating as the reincarnate spell can simply mean how the body is formed (created from the elements at hand), and how to apply the racial modifiers (ignore mental stats, change physical stats, etc).

If it's meant to be simply an automatic use of reincarnate, that's cool. The wording implies something else though.

Plus, since we are treating this as a reincarnate spell, does this mean you gain two negative levels?
I mean... the reincarnate spell is pretty heavy on rules. It's 4+ paragraphs and a d100 chart... it'd be nice if the entry was a little more precise in what's flavour text and what's rules text.

Maybe Star Child will be a race presented in the APG.

"Star child" isn't a mechanic; it's just the flavor of the ability. The mechanics of the ability is a Reincarnate spell.

The whole point of the Star Child is that the character was re-born: into what? We didn't know...
... in the use of this ability we do know. Use the reincarnate chart.

Yeah, The Star Child was opposed to nukes:

2001: A Space Odessey, the novel wrote:
As he sleeps, his mind and memories are drained from his body, and he is made into a new immortal entity, a Star Child, that can live and travel in space. The Star Child then returns to our Solar System and to Earth. Once there, he destroys the many thermonuclear weapons threatening the very survival of the human species (at the end of the book one side has apparently launched nuclear weapons at the other, which are destroyed enroute by the Star Child). Like Moon-Watcher three million years before him, the Star Child is now master of the world and uncertain what to do next—but as Moon-Watcher eventually did, the Star Child too will think of something.

I suspect the star child will turn the atmosphere into one big bong. It's the beginning of the stoned age. Global peace, harmony and munchies.

Hope this was helpful.

In Fortress of the Stone Giants p.89, under Theories of the origin section, in the Shining Children entry, they mention the Shining may be Star Children. Meaning they are the reflection of a dying star given life.

You can get full stats block for the Shining Children on p.88

They don't seem to be a character race though.

Am I to understand that 'star child' is flavor text? It makes me think of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
