How will the volcano affect Paizo shipments to Europe?

Customer Service

Dear customer service,
I gather that products shipping to distributors in Europe (and thence to game stores) move by boat anyway, so are unlikely to be affected by Eyjafjallajökull's recent activities, but what comfort or hope are Paizo able to offer those European customers who receive direct shipments from Paizo normally?
Whilst I have no current personal stake in the direct shipping question, I feel it would still be useful to have some clarification on this for those who do.

I think Paizo should feel obliged to to make sure that all shipments that possibly been delayed due to a Volcano that sounds like something from the Cthulhu Mythos are re-routed to avoid said Volcano.

While we are at it, I expect Paizo to predict all future Natural Disasters so we don't have to worry about our books getting delayed.

I am assuming Charles you were being Sarcastic?

Well partially in jest, but if Eyjafjallajökull keeps on doing its stuff there may be delays of several weeks to subscribers in Europe.

Of course if Paizo had moved their offices onto a supertanker as I suggested last year, they could deliver personally now, instead of having to rely on the vagaries of airmail and an Icelandic volcano prone to erupting for several months at a time. ;)

Apparently (just announced on the 19:00 news slot) they're letting aeroplanes back into the far north of the UK so it seems to be literally blowing over for now. The question is will the pressure build up again or will an adjacent volcano go off next?

Historically Eyjafjallajökul, been known to set off Katla, Which I believe is a Much larger and more dangerous Volcano.

And what is a aeroplane? ;)

Well Paizo? Still waiting...What are you going to do about this!!!!

I think you should send Cosmo to give Eyjafjallajökul a stiff talking to!

That would teach that Volcano Good!

I too want Paizo to do something and fast, there is apocryphal ash in my backyard instead of KM #2 in my mailbox!

Seeing how Paizo stuff usually arrives in game stores here in France before my subscriptions get to my mailbox, I'd rather bet distributors get the books by airmail.

And priority at that (or at least the distributor crates are probably the first things that ship out of the Paizo warehouse when the boat arrives from China).

I will personally go to Iceland and tell Eyjafjallajökul not to ever erupt again. But first I'm going to practice saying the name until it rolls off my tongue easily. So in approximately a decade or so...

You know that every time someone replies to a post in the CS forum it gets bumped to the bottom of the reply queue? In theory we could just keep replying to this and Cosmo would never get this message.

For what it's worth Eyjafjallajökul is one of those names that if I put it in my game my players would be like "C'mon that's way too goofy to be a real name". Proof that truth is almost always stranger than fiction.

It is my Fault for perpetuating it, but we are misspelling it... It is Spelled..

Eyjafjallajökull

Some how we lost the L...

Ok now that is clear...

Cosmo...Destroy it!!!!!!!

Eyjafjallajökull

Hey you know when you spell it like that it's not goofy at all...

Wait what am I saying, my players would never buy a name like that.

Well lets put it this way if the flights are cancelled then the mail on those flights will be delayed until flights are able to get through safely again. I live in Newfoundland the land of fog, so when flights are cancelled for 3 weeks we feel it, and my paizo order gets pushed back 3 weeks while it waits in Halifax.

Maybe an idea - and we could try to be less sarcastic here - or at least partly - the sarcastic part makes more fun reading - and try to help.

First of all - nothing Paizo could do in regard to our subscriptions / orders. They are non trackable.

But there is something the customers can do - for other customers. If you are somewhere in Europe and have ordered on the same day - chances are - a packet for you will take a similar time as a package for someone near. At least it gives you some indication.

So here is my 'tracking service' for the UK. To optimize it I have placed order shorthly before eruption, on the day airspace was closed and after air space was closed. How is that for servive to fellow customers (okay - can't avoid some sarcasm myself :)

Notifications received and progress:
All packaged to the UK
9th April - Outstanding (new subscription)
14th April - Outstanding (some minatures)
16th April - Outstanding (ongoing subscription)

So far none (apart of maybe the first) should have arrived even in normal circumstances. But by following these and posting updates here I hope to be able to allow other people to get a better idea about expectations.

On the bright side - I do have access to the PDF files for two of the packages.

There are a few options what will happen ... It gets re-routed via Spain and looses a few days, it sits somewhere until everything works again (could take a few weeks) or ???

Paizo won't know either - but by sharing here we could get a better idea ourselves. Don't think anything Paizo can do.

I justt got back from vacationon Friday, and at JFK in New York, the earliest they are allowing flights to Zurich (the only people I talked to going that way in the airport) is Wednesday. So that could be a fair indication of how it will affect orders.

Everything is sent per "Airmail"?
Hu, guessed it all would get to Europe per ship.

USPS did away with all non-airmail options (which were cheaper) a few years ago

Ah, didn't know that.

So.. Guess it's good that there are the free pdfs :)

I thought I give a quick update:

It looks like that the order of the 16th actually shipped 22nd. I also added a new order on the 26th - shipped on the 27th. If you wonder about the number of orders - it's mainly as I started the AP subscription - wanted to take advantage of the rebate and my kids wanted Lini and Harsk to start playing - two figures you seem to be unable to get in the UK right now. And with non-book orders it can be cheaper to have two small orders and not one medium one.

So the update is

Nothing here yet as of yesterday (29th). Well - the Ash cloud seems to have affected orders being send off just ahead of the 5 day closure of air space. It's still too early to say if the delay will be 5 days, 2 weeks or a black hole and they emerge in 4 weeks.
As nothing has arrived yet I can't tell if everything shipped after the re-opening will also be bumped back by a week or if late orders will overtake earlier once or ...

If others in the UK/Europe have recently got shipments - please let us know.

Hello,

So far I have not noticed anything unusual. packages arriving nicely.

Stereofm wrote:

I just got two myself.

So here is the update:

Send out 9th April - arrived 01.May
Send out 14th April - outstanding as of 01.May
Send out 22nd April - arrived 01.May
Send out 27th - outstanding as of 01.May

The Ash cloud was closing the Airspace between 14th and 20th April here in the UK. While I only have data for my own shipments so far it looks like a shipment just ahead of the cloud got delayed by 2 weeks compared to one after the air space reopened again.

All of this is probably inside the quoted time anyhow - but I know that people do wait for their stuff. And as you have no tracking I find it at least helpful to have some idea of a delay.

Just got my April package here in Denmark.
Shipped 22nd April - arrived 01.May

Fastest delivery I have ever experienced from Paizo!!

Annnnd here we go again. The volcano is once more spreading a pall of doom. Someone needs to get Cosmo to go and give it another stern telling off. ;)
On the other hand, apparently it's safe enough for a politician to fly to Ireland on an electioneering trip, and they've upped the safety limit, so maybe the disruption won't be so bad this time.

"On the other hand, apparently it's safe enough for a politician to fly to Ireland on an electioneering trip"

Or maybe it's not safe enough - maybe we just don't care if some politicians go up in a plane and don't come back down in one piece :)

This time, the scientists have a better idea what they are facing, I´d guess, so the air traffic is probably not as messed up as the last time.

My latest order shipped on April, 22nd. Usually, it should arrive this weekend or at the beginning of next week. I´ll see...

In a twist of volcanic irony, my latest shipment from Paizo was the fastest one ever, with a regular postal package departing USA on 23rd April and arriving in Poland on 28th. Normal delivery time is 3 weeks :)

Ah, Iceland. So "cold" from all the "ice".

:)

Edit:
The latest update is that apparently the Scots are keeping this ash-cloud to themselves thus far, and they refuse to 'share' it with those south of the border (although they have generously (?) let a little go in the direction of the Emerald Isle).
Must be something to do wth the fact that there is the election on... ;)

The Volcano huldru is mad at you all.
Send heathy money to succor the Volcano huldru.

Another update:

Send out 9th April - arrived 01.May
Send out 14th April - outstanding as of 14.May
Send out 22nd April - arrived 01.May
Send out 27th - arrived 13.May (new)

The Ash cloud was closing the Airspace between 14th and 20th April here in the UK. While I only have data for my own shipments so far it looks like a shipment just ahead of the cloud got delayed by 2 weeks compared to one after the air space reopened again.

Looks like my second shipment went into the ash cloud. This one contained some minatures (not flat) - therefore might take longer anyhow?

I will have to wait a little bit longer it seems. But in case you also had something send to Europe in the week of the 14th and are waiting - you are not the only one.

Thod

Hmm. Further volcanic hijinks reported these past couple of days, and in the spirit of coalition, the Scots are generously sharing the ash cloud with the English this time...
Northern english airports shut; will the ash reach London airspace today? :-?

Just to be safe, your shipments will all go out via train, Charles.

I'm seeing a julesvernian underwater transatlantic train before my mind's eye here.

Here's the plan..The British and European Paizonians buy a boat..it doesnt have to be a big boat..we find some sailors amongst us and head for the US..then we take a big rig cross country to Seattle..load up at Paizo and then bring everything back to the boat and sail back travelling round Europe to deliver everything via local mail..it couldn't be any slower than what we have just now..

Aaah, move them by boat past the Aleutians or across the Bering Straits to Russia, then put them on a train. Brilliant idea. :)

I like this idea !! As long as there is some space left on the boat for a Sultan Gaming table - count me in.

On a different note - I just got the last packet. This one started it's ill fated journey on the first day when the Ash cloud closed the European airspace. 36 days later it finally arrived and was picked up this morning.

Send out 9th April - arrived 01.May (flat envelope)
Send out 14th April - arrived 20.May (packet)
Send out 22nd April - arrived 01.May (flat envelope)
Send out 27th - arrived 13.May (packet)

I hope this did help others who might have been waiting.
