Coolest Normal Familar for a Wizard?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

In the other thread people mentioned what Improved Familiar they like. But what is your favorite familar assuming you don't take that feat and have just a normal critter?

My favorite is probably the rat. It grants a +2 bonus to fortitude saves which helps make one of the wizard's weak points a strength. It's also an excellent scout and spy. It can climb and swim, squeeze through extremely tiny holes, chew through just about anything, and, best of all, nobody is going to think anything about a rat running around in a dungeon. They're everywhere! So most enemies will go "oh, it's just a rat" while an owl, weasel or some other animal is going to raise suspicion if it's noticed most of the time.

I always prefered the raven. The +3 to apraise isnt that big a deal, though it does offer fun roleplaying options(ohh, shiny!). But a familiar that can fly is rather important for scouting, as well as staying out of harms way in a fight.

The ability to speak a normal language bypasses the problem of communicating with it, as well as let the other players get info from it. Not to mention it can be fun letting the raven speak for your character.

Monkey!

Opposable thumbs FTW

My toad familiar, Etrigan, was always a favorite. We used Hypnotoad for his maptool token.

Sovereign Court

I always go for the weasel. I'd like to pick the raven, but I always end up with the weasel...

Shadow Lodge

Next time I have a chance to get a familiar, it's going to be a raven I call Nevermore.

Really want that to be his battle-cry. Bunch of enemies charging, he screams "NEVERMORE!" and I wipe them out... hehe.

Goat, bastards have creepy eyes.

ferret, weasel, whatever you want to call it, it is the king of familiars.

Bats because they are damn cool

Owls, 'cause they do a wicked The Exorcist impression.

Shadow Lodge

Lizards, because you can sell your enemies insurance before you kill them.

~laughter~ It is a good thing that I wasn't eating or drinking anything as I was reading this. ~chuckles~

That could be kinda fun - a wizard with enough arrogance that he can't be bothered to communicate directly with the majority of other mortals and relies on his raven for all communication.

I like it!

Dark Archive

Raven, pretty much always, I love being able to talk to the familiar, or have it communicate with allies.

There, fixed that for you :)

Zo

I would take an octopus.

Just place him on your head and pretend to be a mindflayer while blasting your enemies...

Scarab Sages

Miniature Giant Space Hamster!

Having to deal with this one now: Changeling Wizard's mutable familiar. And she keeps changing it! Okay! I know that's the whole point.
