Pathfinder Society PbP Interest

The Exchange

I've noticed a few posts with players looking for PbP games to join, so I figure now is as good a time as any to give some players an opportunity to dust off their PFS characters and bring them onto the forums.

I'm considering starting a series of Pathfinder Society play-by-post games here on the forums, and I'm curious about how much interest there is out there.

I'll give the disclaimer up front that I've never DMed a play-by-post game, but I do have experience DMing in homebrew settings, Pathfinder APs, and one Society game. I might break a rule on accident every once in a while, but if the rules are clear and somebody points it out I will be flexible and correct my mistake.

What I'd like to see is:
1) People who are interested in playing and able to post regularly.
2) The character(s) those people intend to use, preferably as an up-to-date profile here on the forums.
3) Which Scenarios you have played and which ones you're itching to play.

If I can get a nice group of 4-6 people together who can agree on a scenario/tier, I intend to start it by mid-month. When the scenario is completed, I can email, fax, or snail-mail a Chronicle to you, depending on preference.

Sounds good, especially as I haven't got a local group for doing some of the Society stuff. I'd prefer to go from the first tier, and although I've flicked through some of the scenarios, I've got no real prior knowledge for any of them.

As for a character, I guess that I'd have to give it some thought. Perhaps a Charismatic Rogue. I'm not really up-to-date on the rules of the Society, is the APG beta permissible for Society games?

Straight from the Guide to Organized play:

Guide to PFS, p29 wrote:

PRPG Advanced Player’s Guide Playtest - All six classes (Cavalier, Oracle, Summoner, Witch, Inquisitor, and Alchemist), as they are released, are legal for play. We reserve the right to change, alter, modify, or outright disallow various functions of these classes, especially during the playtest, and you are expected to frequently monitor the Pathfinder Society messageboards for changes while playing these classes during the playtest. You will be forced to re-create any of the above classes to the official class once the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player’s Guide is released. We strongly encourage you to use your play experience to report on what works and doesn’t work with the playtest classes on their specific messageboards on paizo.com. Note: the cauldron hex for the Witch is not legal for play.

So basically, yes you may, but you have to make sure you keep up with the latest version of the class and will be expected to update it when the APG releases.

Ah now that does make it very interesting. I think I'd be far more interested in going with Alchemist.

Shadow Lodge

I am very interested. I have not played any scenarios, but am pretty familiar with the rules for both PF and PF organized play.

I would like to play anything a bit higher than starting level (3-8ish), prefering things that are a bit undead and/or horror heavy.

I'm thinking of going with an Alchemist raised in the Petal District of Absalom but 'divorced' from his family due to his choice in profession. Anyone know of any online Pathfinder character sheets?

Shadow Lodge

I have found this.

You can just fill it out and make a screen shot, or print out and scan it? Armor was really wonky, and I wasn't able to change the CMB/CMD around due to feats, but otherwise very good.

I've got a Wizard (conjurer) that I created for the PFS but can never seem to find a game in a time slot I can play.
I'll have to download the new ruleset to see if she's still legal.
I've yet to play in any PFS scenarios or any PbP, but would prefer to keep it tier 1-2 until I can get more familiar with the way things work.
Allara Devereaux

No better place to run a Pathfinder Society than the boards of Paizo. Count me in!

The Exchange

Alright, so far we've got:

Nostrus, with an Alchemist
Beckett, undecided
Vanulf Wulfson, with Allara Deveraux, a human Conjurer
JZ, also undecided

At this point, it looks like everybody is low level, so I'll probably be running something Tier 1-2. I can definitely do undead/horror heavy; those are my favorite types too. It looks like I've got a good number of choices that fit the bill, but I'll wait to make my decision until I'm sure I've got a group that can play!

I'm going to wait until one week from today for people to sign up. It will be up to 6 players on a first come, first serve basis. This is a large group because to my knowledge, once we've started, we can't replace characters and give Society credit to somebody who joins up; because PbP retention can be iffy I'd prefer to play it safe.

Beyond the first 6 will go on a backup list in order just in case somebody drops out before we start.

Sovereign Court

Put me down as extremely interested please- likely to play a Bard.

I will give this a shot if you will have me. Not sure what class yet, perhaps a sorcerer?

Will I need to create an official PFS character?

I guess I'm on the backup list, then.

I've not played any PFS Scenarios, so if a spot opens I'm up for anything.

Doesn't look like you'll need that week, boss.

Liberty's Edge

JZ here. I'd like to play my cleric of Calistria.

Shadow Lodge

I'm looking at a N.G. Cleric of Sarenrae, but might go a bit more exotic.

Also, here is the PFS Guide in case anyone needs it.

Eric Swanson wrote:

Yes, you will. It's really easy to do and shouldn't take long at all. The PFS Guide that Beckett linked contains all the information you'll need.

As it stands, we've filled up:

1 Nostrus with an Alchemist
2 Becket likely with a Cleric
3 Vanulf Wulfson, with a Conjurer
4 JZ with a Cleric
5 Alexander Kilcoyne with a Bard
6 Eric Swanson with a Sorcerer

Plus the backup list:

7 Heaven's Agent

OInce everybody has posted their Tier 1-2 PFS legal characters, I'll have a look and we'll get this started. I'll link to the PbP thread once it's set.

Sovereign Court

With the sheer amount of magic and mumbo jumbo there i'll make a Fighter instead :).

OK I will get started on my PFS char. BTW, tier 1 is level 1 correct?

The Exchange

Tier 1-2 is first and second level characters, but unless you've got an existing 2nd level character, you'll be playing a brand new, fresh out of Adventuring School character.

OK I have not joined the PFS yet, as you can see by my profile, will work on it tonight and submit it.

Scarab Sages

So this is my Alchemist, or at least as far as I have gotten with it so far. Working more on the background details at the moment while studying the mechanics.

As this is my first PFS character any scenario is good for me.

Take another look at your stats- the Pathfinder Society uses 20 point buy, as detailed here. To answer your question, PFS characters do not start with an prestige.

I'm looking forward to finally seeing an Alchemist in action! The only APG class I've seen played was an Inquisitor in my RL Eberron campaign, and Alchemist is one class that has piqued my interest from the moment it was announced.

OK I have not joined the PFS yet, as you can see by my profile, will work on it tonight and submit it.

Nothing to be ashamed of at all. I'd recommend reading through the PFS Guide linked earlier in the thread; the differences between Society play and casual play are limited in number, but significant enough to be worth having seen. I look forward to seeing your character.

High Fantasy 20 point purchase is what the PFS PDF tells me.

EDIT: Ah ok its like the 3.5 point buy. As the table wasn't on the same page as purchase I missed it and assumed a 1 for 1 all over. Will re-spec.

Ok. A few quick questions as I have never played PFS.

1.) I have never played, so I must start a 1st level Character (as per the document). A.) are we posting them here, (like the spoiler above) or is there going to be a new thread?

B.) Other than create a character and present it for approval, do I need to do anything else to make it official? I do have a PFS ID number.

2.) are we allowed to build characters off of each other. If there are two Clerics, for example, can we talk about our characters before hand so that we don't build the same concept.

3.) How is rolling going to work? A specific dice roller, or honor system, or somethig else?

There is a "register my character" link in the Pathfinder Society area along the right. Register there and you're set.

Absolutely, treat this as you would any Pathfinder Society game. That includes talking to your gaming buddies/table-mates right before you start. Your characters' history is his own and it will be more fun if you all work well together.

If you attend any conventions, this character will be legal to play at them, so keep that in mind. Playing nicely with others is a big plus in those kinds of settings, but in a PbP format it's a lot easier to accommodate more concepts because we aren't limited by the 6 hour time limit.

Beckett wrote:

We have a dice system here! It's easy to use and hard to fake. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 for example. If you search the forums there's a thread that helps explain it somewhere, I'll try to find it later. For now, gotta go, I've got company.

Scarab Sages

Okay then, I believe that Nyria is good to go. I'm notoriously bad at making non-standard sheets, so if I've missed out anything please tell me.

The Exchange

One more update now that we've got a lot of the characters done:

Nostrus - Nyria the Sandsworn, female Human Alchemist
Becket - Janos, Seeker of the Holy Fire, male Elf Cleric
Vanulf Wulfson - Allara Devereaux, female Human Conjurer
JZ - ?
Alexander Kilcoyne - Dakkon Tyranthul, male Human Fighter
Eric Swanson - Wadi Ahk'kolon, male Human Sorcerer

For Dakkon Tyranthul, I'd like to see a little bit more information; specifically, equipment, CMB/CMD saves, and feats at the very least. I can figure the rest out pretty quickly, but if you have the time to post all of the details you'd normally find on a character sheet, that would be awesome.

JZ, I know you wanted to do a Cleric, and I see a PFS character as an alias on your profile named Aristo, but otherwise I have no information. Let me know when you get some details worked out and put them in a place I can find.

Everybody else looks great, I couldn't find any errors or holes.

Equipment, CMB/CMD, saves and feats have been available for your viewing in a previous post since 5:25PM yesterday- see my previous posts and click 'show' to see a fully worked out character sheet... I did it almost immediately after deciding on a Fighter; finishing it before anyone else in fact... :S

Look at the 'Dakkon Fixed' version though since I goofed up ability scores the first time. The only things I need to post to finish Dakkon off is to actually write my backstory down and an appearance. Hes basically an arrogant, classically trained (by an Elf Blademaster), impudent noble from Taldor who patriotically believes his country should reclaim its former glory on the point of a sword.

I know, right? As a matter of fact, yesterday I finished up the last few hours of Dragon Age: Origins.

I've decided on the scenario to run. Tomorrow I'll be posting the game thread to Society #1 Savage Tide. I wasn't planning on starting the game until Sunday, but I also wasn't planning on the game filling up and having everybody able to do any scenario, so that makes it easy.

Tomorrow is my Saturday, though, so when I'm done sleeping in I'll hop on, type out the intro, and get this ball rolling. You can expect it to be linked here by noon.
