Thanks for that Dabbler. I cannot take all the credit, part of the ship board adventure sprang from my terrible dice rolls on the Greyhawk Weather Charts for the first couple of days. When I ended up with a night snowstorm things kind of fell into place.
Compliments aside, I feel that the start has gone okay, especially with most of you guys posting very regularly, something I find gratifying. On the downside I think the encounters has been a bit aimed at one or two characters so far, not necessarily the same one each time but while I have tried to bring everyone into each bit, I'm don't think that I managed it well yet. Thoughts?
The next main part should give everyone a chance to do their own thing a bit more, can't say more for now.
The other point I wanted to bring up is experience, I'm not really keeping an eye on it, but at the moment everyone is about half way to the next level. If you intend to stick with the same class then going up a level will be easy, if however you want to learn something new then together we need to start planning how the PC will accomplish that learning.
Finally if you have any other criticisms, constructive or otherwise then go for it. I feel confident with you lot to throw that one out there and know I'll benefit from whatever you say.
Cheers

I'm loving the game so far, although some of the time on the ship I feel Saorise is useless as she refuses to dirty herself with the rowing. That's no fault of yours though and not really a criticism. :)
Saorise is planning on going Frost Sorceress all the way, so there's no problems from that end. Next level I plan on rectifying some of the strange Skill choices I've made though (ie. No Knowledge Arcana - WTF was I thinking there?). I'm thinking that she's been talking with Jorgen thougout the voyage and dealing with the Rune problems is starting to jog her memory from training.

Thinking about dipping into ranger or rogue at some point, though I'm not sure yet. Sticking with fighter could also be good.
I'm enjoying the game a lot and I think it's been a blast so far. Looking forward to seeing more of the world off the ship, though.

I just wanted to post here to make sure everybody know I'm not really angry as Stefnir is, and if you think he's going over the line, let me know and I'll reign him in.
I see Stefnir as a Druid...a man who is used to being in charge, and he's bucking being ordered about (In his mind :-).
I also see viking type cultures as being at each others throats one minute, and drinking beer with their arms around each others shoulders the next. Passionate and blood thirsty...and beer thirsty.

I agree with everything you have said. Insults and tests of manhood or unarmed combat is fine by me, but weapons and bloody violence is too far.
Perhaps I have ratcheted the tension up too far? But player versus player fights and the like are not what I enjoy seeing.
If ANYONE attacks another PC and its not a bad guy charming them to do a Taggrik then I will be forced to consider ejecting them from the game.
I will not take sides on this however its up the party to resolve this without my help. There are plenty of reasons for not attacking each other, and I suggest one or two of the PCs need to help the others cool off a bit.
Cheers

So how do we keep Kurn and Stefnir from killing one another or at least walking separate ways once we get this ship to shore? I'm sure there is a way ... I know! Beer! We'll get them both drunk!
I like that too - but Anya seems to like Ragnar, and Helga feels sorry for him, so he's good by us! <grin>

Hurling insults is a legitimate form of Viking fighting. Also think about the Kirk Douglas film where he has to split the girl's plaits with throwing axes, that is a very inspirational film for this game.
Kurn is going to need a clerk to keep track of all the battles he must fight when he lands, Anya?....Stefnir....Jorgen.

OK I am back, but no Internets was very painful, so even though I'm back I may still not be too talkative since I have to catch up on a huge amount of crap (PbPs, FB, e-mails, etc...). Oh and I also have to spend the next 2 days re-formatting my computer and getting it back up to scratch, so that's gonna put me out of the loop again as well.
I should have Internet again by tomorrow night (my Monday, USA Sunday night) so I can at least check in, but I have a lot of work to cram into the next two days, so sorry if I am a bit splotchy on contact 'til midweek. :)

Let it be known that the fact that Ari ran a game on Saturday and I lost 2 PC's will not colour my monsters attacks in the future. I am sure I will get over the grizzly bear ripping my level 1 AC24 cleric's head off. Especially after it took my 12 hours to paint the figure!
Anyway enough of that, Stefnir asked about his character and its place in society as an Unfettered Druid (just so you no the whole idea comes from the books on the Land by Stephen Donaldson).
General Knowledge
Druids act as advisors, healers and magistrates of the Law. However some find the in depth training too constricting and need to break free of the strictures of the faith of Samthain and their duties, these men and women become Unfettered. They are allowed to leave their training and go into the wilds or wherever to pursue their own vision. People value having them around for their skills and abilities although many are hermits who value their own privacy more.

On the subject of hit points you may re-roll any result but you must take the second one even if it is lower.
As for the APG, I have been reading bits of it but I don't have my own copy yet. So anything you want from there will need to be on a case-by-case basis. I don't tend to say no so long as whatever it is fits the setting.
The summoner class is the only one that I dislike and some of the others (witch in particular) fits the Viking theme well.

OK, I'm sorry it took me so long to catch up. Getting back from holidays I had to re-format my computer (and thankfully upgrade to Windows 7) and so that took a few days to get it back up to scratch. Then I've been sick and busy and had to catch up with half a dozen PbPs (I'm sorry yours was the last FW). I'm back again now and finally ready to continue if you'll have me. :)
Level 2 Ice Sorceress Hit Points: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Let's throw caution to the wind shall we: 1d6 ⇒ 5 Gotta be happy with that one, right. :)

Sorry for the delay all, RL stepped up in the form of us deciding that it was time for my new gf to go back to work. And since I can operate my business from home, suddenly this 20yrs long confirmed bachalor is playing Mr. Mom to her two beautiful toddler girls (whom I dearly love.)
But between dirty diapers, bathtime, feeding, play, breaking up fights and the little one with a fever (which means she has become surgically attached to the(my) hip), not to mention getting my new biz going and trying to keep some semblance of an actual relationship going with ma girl, time has been a commodity in short supply. Thankfully, do to my getting more into the grove of things now and an invention called a DVD player, I am able to grab a few moments here and there.
Anya will simply be leveling to Barb 2 and I'll get to it asap. If at any time though my absence causes any delay please feel free to dmpc Anya.
Thanks

Can everyone complete their character levelling by Saturday so that I can start Stuvoy's Fate on Sunday?
Good dice rolling everyone.
Khal thanks for the heads up, I appreciate that especially when I am fleshing out the NPCs as we write.
Flash, you haven't missed much and I hope that Saorise can be more involved once we hit land.
Cheers

A couple of days ago I dropped out of two of my games, partly for RL reasons like my wife finishing maternity leave and me taking on the two kids full time but also to a small extent because of the amount of time spent on my games.
DMing Legacy of Fire is much easier than this because its straight out of the book. This one is different. When you guys reach Stuvoy there will be plenty of opportunity for the party to split up and talk to different people.
This presents some dilemmas for me, first of all its how do we handle the posting.
Option 1 is everyone posts openly and you guys practice not paying attention to the details in the other posts.
Option 2 is everyone posts openly with certain details kept under spoiler.
Say like Saorise meets the chief and has a chat which is mostly done in the open, except the secret mission which she then can deal with herself).
Option 3 is lots of spoilers, one game thread with people occasionally meeting up for in character discussions of what to do next.
Option 4 is separate threads as and when everyone heads off to do their own thing.
Although I am an experienced DM, I am beginning to realise that I'm not so good at giving players freedom to act (something I'd like to work on here) so I'd like your advice. Wellard (AKA Mr Fothering), feel free to chip in if you are reading this.
The other problem is about timing. If four of you go off to see the chief and it takes a week or more to post while someone else goes to see the blacksmith for a tumble in the hay (Anya I'm looking at you) which is dealt with in two or three posts then people start to fall out of sync.
Suggestions?
Maybe I'll just have to come up with solutions as events transpire around the port. But perhaps the key will be everyone trying to involve the others, telling them what they are doing so that they can just meet up whenever they have finished a scene.
Cheers

I like Option 2. I don't think there is a need to spoiler everything, but do think that some stuff should be kept "secret". I don't think seperate Threads is a good idea, since different party members may split up with others at different points for differnt reasons.
I'm not really sure how to deal with the second issue though, other than trying to keep the quicker finishing party busy with other things until everyone is ready to meet up again. Also giving the slower moving group a little nudge and maybe DMPCing for certain parts might be good as well (I have absolutely no problem with someone playing any of my PbP characters to speed things along as I know that with the slow pace a PbP moves at, if you get a roll going it's not good to break it to wait for someone, especially if they're in different time zones).
| James Keegan |
Option 2 sounds good. Even if my character isn't involved, I still enjoy reading the posts. Maybe if there's going to be a long conversation or event it's best if we pair up a little so that there's always someone that can switch off and keep things moving if another player gets wrapped up with something offline?
| Dabbler |
I would say Option 2, unless one half of the party is LONG WAY OFF from the other (ie one half trek inland and the other sails around the coast). On the flip side, I think it would be nice if we, the party, agree to just not split up for any appreciable length of time.
BTW, I shall be on hols for the next week or so, I will have my laptop with me but posts may be short, and editing new backgrounds may be right out.
