Well, I guess that's one way to get a sticky tank.

Spell in can implies a lack of originality, which only matters in a writing/design contest (most potions are spell in a can, but are a staple to the genre). Altering a spell significantly can show some inventiveness beyond a fireball tossing fighter.

I do agree that Lexicon is a fickle beast. :)

While you're at it, a bound stack of bills that, when unbound, you can throw in the air, raising the morale of everyone in a 15 ft radius. "Little Wayne's Rainmaker" will be a core component in the success of every group on Golarion.

Carbolic healing then? ;)

That would be the Unnecessarily Harsh Soap of Healing.

Hmmm. All this talk of bottled spells worries me a bit. I would be the first to say mine was a semi-spell in a can, but that's mostly because I looked at what I wanted to make, then figured how you'd go about doing it within the context of the game.

The main reason for this is it's like playing with the elements of the world. If for example, the spell mirror image fits the effect of what you're trying to do, I'd use mirror image as a starting point and then build up around it. In some cases it may take two or three spell effects combined to get everything flowing properly. I mean, if it has a concealed magic aura, then obviously the magic aura spell should be used with the item, and likely the effect too.

That being said, I now shall sit and wonder if my submitted item will fair well. It contains maybe a line of descriptive text that explains its use, and is also a bit of back-story, and it includes several spell effects and a little bit of fiddling. Here's to hopin' I guess. ^-^

Obviously I can't say if your item will be a good one or not.. But (and this is strictly my opinion), a spell-in-the-can is not the instant death of your item. It's just that much harder to do such an item and have it come across as original, special, and creative. Again, not impossible, just a lot more challenging to pull off successfully.

If you did start with an idea of an overall item first, and then looked at the spells that would lend themselves towards the application you were trying to achieve.. you're taking a good and decent approach.

Again, there's no way to be sure, but I hope that makes you feel a little better.

It does. Thanks Watcher. ^_^

Last year, someone made the comment that:
Static Effect + Limited Use Effect = Good Item Design

I try to follow that philosophy as much as possible. Except for this year's superstar entry, where I just blatently ignored it.
