Kobold Quarterly 11

The Exchange Kobold Press

Yes indeed, KQ has launched its second Pathfinder-friendly issue, number 11. This one contains GM advice from Jason Bulmahn, plus an article by Paizo intern Hank Woon.

And probably Monte Cook's best "Game Theories" column to date. So.....Thoughts? Favorites? Traps and diagrams for future installments?

Let's hear it!

Buy the magazine folks.

You know you want it.

:)

Spoiler:
I suppose I probably should have posted a more constructive and compelling post, but I haven't finished reading this issue yet. I do have to say it looks beautiful and keeps getting better with every issue.

The Paizo Store Blog even has some very nice things to say about it.

Scarab Sages

Monte's article is good.

I also like the Whack Jacks and Harpy Nets. And the spell-less ranger will get a pretty thorough looking over.

I'll be anxious to hear what you think - I'm actually playing one right now in our Council of Thieves game.

I think I can't believe I didn't mention James Jacobs participation in the DM Roundtable feature! Doh, sorry James!

Scarab Sages

I said it before but since we're talking about it:

The massacre mace is hands down the awesomest thing to happen to grimlocks since the Dragon ecology article and made all the more awesome for its simplicity.

Come on people, we need more OGL content in there! ;-)

Edit: Figure I'd better include a smiley to avoid accidentally sparking an edition war.

I sent in two for #11 which didn't make the cut. A submission for #12 has also been sent. The letters section in #11 made it sound to me like Wolfgang is getting plenty of queries for PFRPG and OGL material.

I've been busy as well, not with any luck, but something should stick in the end ;>

Don't you just love how they bisected your 2 page article with another 2 pages of adds?

I mean, really, that couldn't have waited until page 68?

I really want to like Nature's Healing, as it looks cool and is a very iconic power, but unless I'm reading it wrong it seems poorly defined. What heal checks does this apply to? Long-term care? First aid? There don't seem to be restrictions on uses per day, so if this doesn't take long to use then it's basically infinite healing. Not that that would be the end of the world, but I'm not sure if it's what you intended.

As with the standard ranger, I would probably recommend giving terrain first and enemy later. Terrains are usually closer to the core of a ranger's concept (they want to start out with them), while favored enemies are more fun and useful if they can be developed as the game progresses.

Overall, I like your use of conditional sneak-attack and fast movement to emphasize his favored enemy/terrain choices. Fast movement in particular fits like a glove. I'm a little worried that this makes him even more dependent on circumstance, but in my experience it's pretty easy to choose favored terrains that will come up at least a plurality of the time (dungeon in Ptolus, forest in Faerun, urban in Freeport). Had I not just built my own ranger I would totally send this to my players. :)

I was kind of wondering this myself. I had assumed it would be Treat Deadly Wounds, which would limit its use to one time per day, as that is the only function where the healer "gives" a patient hit points, as opposed to long term care, which just lets the healed heal faster on their own.

I'd be interested to see what function this is suppose to work with.

I am, but I think it's fair to note that the big upswing in Pathfinder queries has been accompanied by a (perhaps not surprising) downswing in OGL queries.

I can't print articles that aren't written and submitted, so if you have been sitting on an OGL query, now's a great time to put it together and send it the kobold mines.

I haven't had time to read it thoroughly yet, but like others have said I really enjoyed the article by Monte Cook.

One question regarding the alternative ranger, which looks cool, though.
It doesn't have the medium armor proficiency that rangers got with Pathfinder. Was that intended?

Thanks,
Leonal

I obviously can't answer for anyone, but I also noticed that a lot of abilities, like the stealth attack, specify that the ranger needs to be wearing light armor, so maybe it was intended that way.

Yes, I saw that too, but wasn't sure if it was stuck from 3.5 or not. :)

That's probably it, actually, yea. The phrase "additional hitpoints" implies that it only kicks in when your heal check is restoring hitpoints anyway, and the situations in which you can do that with a heal check are very limited.

As for Monte's article, I actually wasn't that impressed. I LOVE Monte's writing, don't get me wrong- I check his blog every day, it's the only 'blog' that I read. He's a great writer

This one just seemed a lot less insightful and constructive, and a lot more soapboxy ('This is what the game is about, this is what it isn't. This is how you should play, this is how you shouldn't'). He also stormwinds pretty hard once or twice.

I did enjoy the anecdote about the convention game and Water Breathing.

Liberty's Edge

Hi everyone,

I'm glad you liked the Spell-less Ranger. It was very much a labor of love!

Nature's Healing is indeed intended to work primarily with Treat Deadly Wounds. I did leave it a bit vauge though, because I think it would not be out of the question for a DM to rule that it also works on long term care etc (as long as it occured within a Favored Terrain)

Light armor was intended as well. I know Pathfinder bumped it up to Medium (which is cool) but for this spell-less, slightly more stealthly variant, I kept it at Light.

Scarab Sages

Sad to say, but as much as I like KQ, with the 4E content, I no longer find it worth the money I'd spend on it.

Thanks for the clarification, and I agree it fits better with a stealthy ranger. :)

My next ranger NPC(And maybe a PC if my GM lets me) will be using your model.

I dig that cover. Am planning a full review, soon.

I've never held a 4e rulebook in my life, but I for one still read and enjoy the 4e content.

Lou, curious to hear your review of it here or elsewhere.

Aberzombie, I know it's impossible to please everyone, so we're just continuing to print the best material we get. Some of it is 4E, of course, but I'm happy how quickly Pathfinder has been embraced by the writers.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Cool, thanks for the review! I'm always in love with the most recent issue, so it's nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks it is loaded with good stuff.

This makes the second 5-star review for KQ11!

I should be getting mine today. Can't wait. My first try at KQ.

Just posted a review of my shiny new pdf love.

The Exchange Owner - D20 Hobbies

Got my subscription, was a lot of 4E content. Scares me a little, since all the 4E content has virtually no use to me.

Got it, read it and loved the Pathfinder Ranger. Its much much better than a spell casting ranger. makes more sense. The talents were a great addition

The Exchange Kobold Press

James, thanks for the feedback!

I'm surprised to see you say it is a "lot" of 4E content. By my count, KQ#11 offers 14 articles (not counting reviews, letters, etc), and only 3 of those are 4E-only articles. One of those 4E articles will given the Pathfinder rule treatment this week on KQ.com. So, 2 of 14 doesn't seem like a lot.

On the other hand, several articles are dual-statted, so maybe that leads to the impression.

In any case, you'll see more Pathfinder-specific content next issue. The game is still new enough that freelancers are getting their queries sharpened up, so there's a lag.

I've been tempted to pick up a subscription to this. I really miss Dragon coming to my mailbox, but really don't have a use for 4E content. If your planning on publishing more Pathfinder content in future issues I'd definately be interested.

Liberty's Edge

Hey MerrikCale, glad you enjoyed the Spell-less Ranger!

As for more Pathfinder content, I know I am putting the finishing touches on a pretty big Pathfinder article focusing on clerics that I am REALLY excited about ...

What's this? I impressed the mighty Mairkurion? Now there's a badge of honor, if I've ever seen one. ;)

Both you guys got the best of my love...you know, review love. Ahem.

Oh and the fact you have an article in this issue is in no way a bias for you ... ;)

Wolfgang, this was another great issue. I have to say that while I am not a 4E fan, some of the content you have for 4E would make for some interesting conversion to 3.5 of PF. Keep up the great work and I hope to see you at Paizocon 2010 (and film any seminar you may conduct ...). The variant class was nice ... I have player who is running a ranger that may give this a shot.

Adam, great article of those alternate weapons. You and your compatriots came up with some good stuff there. More! More!

The Exchange Kobold Press

Glad you like it, Zylphryx!

Yep, the sanity rules will be translated to Pathfinder and published for free on KQ.com this week. I hope that Adam and friends do more Pathfinder or 3.5 content for a future issue.

Me too.

Silver Crusade

With all the Pathfinder stuff, I've decided to give it a try. I ordered issue 11 (and 10, because it seems PRPG heavy too). In order to save on shipping, I added them to my subscription sidecart, and I was wondering if there was a way to subscribe to the magazine through Paizo? The regular KQ subscription costs way too much in shipping to Canada, but with the AP subscriber discount and combining shipping, it's quite reasonable.
