In regard to China. The only relationship between what I see here in China and what goes on in the boards is the knee-jerking that I've seen. This is the chief characteristic of Chinese messageboard moderation. Also, I reckon I wanted to illustrate my own particular sensitivity to this stuff from being over here for so long.... you know... just trying to give people a window into how I see this stuff.

I also admit that I am and always have been deeply suspicious (almost paranoid) about anyone who shows a strong desire to punish, censor, control or silence others.

Aubs, when Dead Horse was locked I almost popped a bloody artery. I had always used him tastefully, was using him to try and diffuse situations not worsen them, and today I still don't understand today why they locked it--all I know is that Gary unlocked it when I emailed him an appeal. Anyway, it was then that I said to myself: "self, someone at Paizo thinks it's acceptable to just wipe stuff out because he personally doesn't like it."

... and then I started watching.

Why, I ask you as an example, should someone be warned if they were to put a Christian signature after their posts?
Because we don't like signatures, we have deliberately not implemented a signature function, and I've emailed several people over the years pointing this out and asking them not to type or paste in a signature into every post they make. Religious or not makes no difference to me. Signatures clutter the board. Same with smilies.

Not implementing them is one thing. Paizo does not like them and will warn people who use them is another.

See, if I were you, I would write that in the board policy, because it sure sounds like a policy to me. Otherwise dudes are going to come in here waving their John 3:16 only to get warned, thinking no doubt that the moderator is an asshat.

Why can't I include a signature with my posts?

We're trying to keep the appearance of our messageboards as clean and streamlined as possible. Signatures that get repeated over and over on a page detract from the main conversation, and we'd prefer that you not manually insert them into your messages.

~looks around for Gary~ Where did he go?

Liberty's Edge

The thing about moderation:
freedom of speech is nice and all, but when I go places with massive posting populations and ergo little to no moderation, I see essentially this:

poster A: "well thought out opinion."

poster B: "you're a f!*$ing whore shit f*#& @%^@#! f@$@ @#$%^ f$%&."

poster A: "well, f$&~ you and your candidate/opinion/favorite team up your @#$^$%@% you f*$*ing f#+~."

poster C: "LOL!"

poster D: "Ooooh....you're a female? You're a &%#@$&^^* face!"

poster E: "That's my wife. I own knives. I will @%%^@$ you up in person, you @%#$^&."

I mean, I can do that all day too, but it's pedantic after a while.
I think moderation is a necessary evil. It's never going to be perfect.

~Wicked smile~ Of course, THIS sometimes describes a few of the people on the boards. Sadly, I sometimes fall in that catagory at times.

Technically it is stated as a preference and not a policy. In fact, it would seem to indicate that posting a signature once in a thread would be fine, they just do not wish it in every single post by the poster.

Thanks, you proved my point.

It's not in the messageboard posting policy which is why I've never seen it and you have to keep explaining it over and over again.

:p

EDIT: IMHO the crackpot posts on Paizo clutter up the boards and detract from the main conversations AND Heathanson should be banned for life. In fact, you should send ninjas to his house to shave him compltely and hang him upside down with duct tape, naked, from a telephone pole.

I blame Canada and Kruelaid especially!

Kruelaid, have you been a bit "Punchy" lately? ~SMIRKS~

I will have to remember that. One of my best friends is Canadian. From Montreal to be exact. But he is not a Frenchy. ~grins~

I doubt this is the original but here and here. The other stuff in her Scandanavia folder follows a similar theme of anthropomorphised countries.

Obviously this a politically motivated link, I would suggest you keep those types of things to the off-topic sections, where they may be deleted at leisure.

Some poeple have a differing opinion on what constitutes humor and what doesn't. I get that. What I don't get is people not voicing their opinion in the thread. Instead, they flag it, which is really, really passive aggressive.

In fact, they could have said the same thing they are saying here, on that thread. But they decided to not only delete the threads but ban me for something no one visibly objected to. And then they banned me. I wasn't really angry that they did that, but gee guys, come on. It was never heated, and the exchanges were barbs, not anyone purposefully out to hurt other posters feelings.

You received a 24-hour timeout, not a ban... banning would be permanent. And the main reason that we gave you a timeout was that you posted not one, but two separate threads on the same topic within a very short period. If you'd limited yourself to just one thread, you'd have likely just received a warning, but since you combined it with, essentially, spamming the boards with an apparent axe to grind, you got the timeout.

I hate the way my brain works sometimes. I saw the word gestapo and saw "postage" without comprehending the actual word's presence.

You can also get "Go paste!" outta there, and who doesn't love paste?

I put it to you that those who do not love paste are the sort of wrong thinking folks we just don't won't around here. It makes things adhere, it tastes good, come on!

I'd reveal my depthless loathing of paste haters but I don't want to start a flame war.

Is paste flammable?
