George Jetson had them beat long before then.

The article actually says that the cell in the picture was from a 1974 translation and the original piece was drawn in 1937.

My interpretation was that that particular piece of artwork was original to the 1974 version... I would think if it was drawn that way in the 30s, they would have drawn attention to that, and probably found an original English language printing for their picture.

Not all that surprising, compared to the plethora of ways that portable computers have been portrayed inaccurately. Someone was bound to imagine something close to what we use (briefcase + typewrite - size).

ever read farenheight 451? Bradbury did an amazing job of predicting chat rooms, 24 hour news, and the internet in the form of immersive room encompassing televisions. The book was written in the early 50s.

Not disagreeing, I'm just saying this particular piece of technological prophecy appears to be from the year 1974. I could be wrong, that's just how I read the article.

And George Orwell describe a computer in 1899 when he wrote When the Sleeper Wakes Not to mention fighter and bomber planes, massive skyscrapers, arcologies...etc.

I personally feel that most of those people have seen glimpses of the future.

I thought I saw something one time about how scientists and inventors have looked to Star Trek for ideas for real inventions.

There will be a holodeck someday. It's not that Star Trek was prophetic, but that people watched Star Trek and said "I want that" and found a way to build one.

They seem like such inefficient weapons compared to those with more range, but I'll tell you what... You master the force, and I'll build you a lightsaber ;)

And being able to cut through metal rather than just stick to it, with your plasma micrometers away from having *any* effect on the metal....

Awesome book. As I read it, I kept noticing amazing similarities with the current age (huge tv, dying newspapers, people rarely leaving their little bubbles, etc.).

If the Mac Plus had been a Toshiba Laptop computer...things would have been far more interesting.
