Your God of Knowledge,
Nethys
I don't see that it needs any more official word than what is written in the feat. Feat says"You can increase the reach of your melee attacks by 5 feet until the end of your turn". It says attacks instead of attack, and also says that it lasts until the end of your turn. So why wouldn't it work?

Because the ability to threaten 48 squares around you is a very powerful ability. Maybe too powerful.
I balancing factor would be if one gave up the imediately closest 8 squares - just as is the case with reach weapons.
For some weapons (like a greatsword) it might be logical to threaten both at 5' and at 10', but for others, hafted weapons in particular, it does not.

You don't threaten those squares, you just get to attack anyone within those squares once. And unless you have access to a weapon similar to the 3.5 spiked chain, you would only be able to attack 24 squares.

Guess I am going to disagree here to the fact that you can attack a target 5ft away while using lunge. The feat does not say you get "natural reach(pg195 Large Creatures)" and that is the only type of attack that can target adjacent targets and further.
I mean Jason said he removed the spiked chains ability to attack at 10ft and 5ft as it was too powerful. I can not believe he meant to give the ability back to every weapon in the game for one feat. That is my take on it and that means Whirlwind and Lunge is nice, but not powerful as you only get the 16 squares that are 10ft away.

This is a good point that I hadn't thought of before. I think it mitigates what could be a despicable (in my opinion) feat combination of whirlwind attacking with greater trip
I don't want to thread-jack. There is already a thread for that combination..| The Grandfather |

I am sorry. When I wrote threat I of course meant ability to attack. Thank you for pointing that out.
As for 48 squares. I was a bit confused. I had had a discussion with one of my players yesterday about this and we where talking Lunge+Enlarge person (which brings us up to 48 squares). Thanks again for the correction :)

Very good point. I had not read Jason's statement, but it underlines the need for an official commentary.

Its not all that bad. From my understanding of what Jason said, the ability was removed from the spiked chain due not just to the ability to attack into the squares, but threaten into them as well. Lunge as written, doesn't extend past your turn (although its Ac penalty does), therefore your threatened area remains the same, just your attack range is increased.
For a feat, its good and solid. Its hardly a "every build must have this" though, and since its offensive ability is limited to your turn, I don't see why RAW (it can be applied to any attack during your turn, whirlwind, cleave, great cleave, whatever) seems so overpowered.

I'd like to underscore this. Read the feat carefully. The reach is only granted on YOUR turn. You keep the -2 AC UNTIL your NEXT turn. The feat is fine as written.

So far people have been right about the feat's function. Jason said that the spike chain got too much for 1 feat, THW with weapon finesse, trip and disarm bonuses, reach, and could attack within 5ft. So he cut out the too-much prolem, gave it a -2 AC effect (powering it down a little), and made it it's own feat.
