Pathfinder RPG: Collector's Edition?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

I'm just wondering if Paizo has considered doing a "collector's edition" of the PFRPG corebook, along the lines of the 3.5 collector's editions (not the disappointing 4E versions)?

Just wondering what was bad about the 4e ones?

Well other than foiled cover there was no real difference between collector's edition and non-collectors edition where as 3.x had the leather bound versions that really justified $75 per book.

Problem with a collector's edition of PF is that the books would be pushing $100 easily if they went leather bound.

Well I have zero interest in 4e so had no clue. I always thought the leather bound 3e books were nice.

Actually, I was thinking of a $100.00 price tag; I think they could move enough units to make that work.

Exactly; the 3.5 ones were sweet. The 4E ones, not so much.

Didn't the 3.5 collector editions have the content updated for errata at the time of their original printing, or was that only a rumor?

No, you are correct. They did the same with 4e.

I liked the 3.5 CEs. I didn't pay full price, though - got them all for a better price. I wouldn't have paid what they wanted originally.

I'd pay any money for a CE bound in leather made from Jason - he has plenty of it, won't hurt :P /ducks /runs

I understand. They were indeed expensive, though you could see the quality (they were just well-crafted books, period).

And: Shameless bump. I was hoping to get an "official" unofficial comment from a Paizonian.

Yep. However, if I enjoy PAthfinder as much as I suspect, and since it would only be 2 books instead of 3, I may actually talk myself into buying a "Collectors Edition", but by the gods make it look like a collectors edition, faux leather covers, embossed lettering, silk book mark, etc...

Definitely wait long enough to allow for errata to be addressed too. Plus if PF sales blow the Paizo offices sky high they can make collectors editions with greater confidence.

Help us sell out our print run in the first month, and I will strongly consider adding a "collector's" edition.

Right now our primary concern is the "Gamer" edition, which is to say the regular edition we're selling for $49.99.

Its simple, they haven't answered because they don't have an answer, yet.

IF they were to give one I would bet it would be along the lines of still having to wait and see how things go before risking money on such a printing.

:)

See?

When I saw the thread title, I thought, it is way too early for that kind of stuff. They have small print runs, which means higher cost per copy - add that to the higher cost to produce anyways, and it gets risky to try it. I would paizo rather have concentrate on content, and save the fancy stuff for later, when Pathfinder is firmly established.

A bit too early for a collector's edition.

On the other hand, I'd like to request a collector's edition PDF, complete with images of embossed leather covers and a bookmark ribbon appearing in the margin of a random page. :P

You can always give your copy to a book binder and develop with him a cover of your liking: full leather with raised edges, ribbon markers, gilt page edges, maybe even brazen breeches, etc.

Look at the new cover of this rebound bible to get an impression what is possible. Of course, you have to invest quite a few $, but you get a book with high quality binding.

So, where did I put this blasted key?

I'll get on it. As coincidence would have it, I was programming subliminal messages into our softwre and had space for one more.

So if all goes as planned, I'll be Supreme Ruler of Earth before the month is out, AND we'll get Golarion globes. Is that a kick-ass July or what?

Indeed it is, Supreme Ruler.

A leather bound edition would be nice. But considering the price of the book I am not sure it would be remotely close to afforadable for most people. Especially with today's economy. I would love to have one, but I serious doubt I could justify the price of one.

If it is a good business decision for Paizo then by all means. But I would rather them avoid risking business moves and stick to makeing a solid profit so they stay in business a long time.

That's a good point. A book like that would likely cost something like $100 - and paying another 100 for a book you already have, in this day and age, is probably not something a lot of people would do. And the print run has to be big enough to make it profitable without making the book too expensive.

Wow! Now this is something I would love to have done to my favorite books - the hardest part would probably be to decide which one(s). Perhaps I will order a second copy of the rulebook to have it modified at some point.
