[CharOp] Is it worth cross-posting and updating handbooks?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

I have a number of handbooks for rarely played or weaker classes over at 339 that I'd love to have updated to Pathfinder rules, to see if the case for these classes becomes stronger. Do you think it's worth the trouble of reformatting them extensively to be readable on these boards, should I just not bother, or should we start entirely new handbooks?

Knowledge is power. If you post it, I'll give them a read. I am always in the market for gonzo oddball antagonists for my Sigil game.

As long as the posts are in the correct sub-forum, no problem. I'd love to see it. Since we don't have the final rules for PFRPG, posting in the Beta and 3.5 sections would be most relevant.

Are those book public-domain? If not, remember the max numer of pages you can quote from a text for demonstrative purposes. If they're public domain though then by all means bring them on, I welcome with open arms all options! =)

As they are fan made, I believe our handbooks are technically public domain. Reposting them may be worthwhile once the final rules drop. Do you know what the plans for licenses on the core pathfinder rpg are?

You'd probably be better off holding out until the Pathfinder RPG book comes out and then working with a complete set of the new rules.

I've been fussed at once or twice for daring to mention non-core books, so keep in mind that a few people expect you to miraculously know and abide by their personal game rules.

I think I'll cope with that by tanking the incoming fuss, or relying on my sophisticated point-defense system to allow me to continue to achieve my function, which is categorically referred to as being gnarly. ;) I don't mind ruffling a few feathers accidentally, if it's an unavoidable outcome of stating my opinion politely.

One thing to note: compared to the WotC message boards, threads get archived fairly quickly here, and it's sometimes difficult to find a particular archived thread.

(No offense, Gary.)

Hey Hogarth! Good to see you over here.

That's going to be problematic. Is there a way around this? Maybe a readily accessible archival forum for handbooks? :: hums intently :: wish I knew precisely what BBS system they were using as the base for these forums. I'd know more about what is a reasonable suggestion.

As far as I know, completely homegrown, although I could be wrong.

I think having an updated handbook would be a good thing. I've actually used them for various characters that I've wanted to make, but just couldn't figure out how to make them doable.

I'm curious, have you considered something like a CharOp wiki? That may not be the best set up for hammering out ideas and making them work, but it might be a good place to put your work after it is final... as much as such things are ever 'final'.

Hey Doc (welcome to the boards, by the way - Lilith should be around to give you e-cookies shortly), may I throw out a suggestion to perhaps host your handbooks on GoogleDocs and instead just link to them at the end of each post you make (in the relevant threads) in a spoiler?

I know first hand the frustration of not being able to edit posts after a certain time period, but this is the solution that I've found most viable (at least for myself).

Good call, Gene. GoogleDocs is another awesome tool.

I love the Char Op Handbooks I think they should be updated after The final game come out

I think we should do as much for the players and DMs as we can and show them that not all Optimizers are munchkins

If you think outbound links to google docs won't upset anyone, this is how I normally prepare and save my preliminary work anyway. It'd save me a lot of effort. Alternatively, I can set up a dedicated wiki-style site for optimization handbooks. Hard to say which is a better plan.

Im not very computer savy so which ever is easier and least likly blocked at my work is what i will vote for

I didn't actually say it before, but I've used some CharOp handbooks/lists with great success before; and I'd appreciate them living on.
