Tattoos... not the one from Fantasy Island...

Liberty's Edge

Back in college, I declared that I would get a tattoo if the Tar Heels won the 1993 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

They did, but thus far, I haven't. I figured I haven't offically welched on the bet unless I die before getting one.

I guess I'll get one eventually, once I decide on what it should be, if it is worth the price, and find an artist whose style I like.

So anyone else out there thinking about getting one? Have one? Have one but wish they didn't?

Share some stories, if you will.

I've always wanted to, but never actually gone through with it. I'm afraid I'll have an allergic reaction to the dye. Not an unfounded fear, since I'm allergic to a lot.

I've got one, on the back of my shoulder. I've had it for 15 years or so. It's a broken sword in a circle, generally speaking: specifically speaking, it's the holy symbol of Dunad, the chief god of honor from the Aysle realm in the Torg roleplaying game. Among nongamers, I let them know that it symbolizes a belief that there is magic in the world, even when you can't see it at work, and I tell the fable of Dunad breaking his sword to release magic into the world. It tends to come off as "fairy tale-y" rather than "creepy" to non-gamer listeners, which has been quite nice.

I have a standing stone with a rune of protection and my twin's names done in Nordic Runes over my "heart" area...

I want a half-suit, but until I win the lottery that ain't gonna happen...

Hmm. Hadn't considered that. My family is full of allergic-types.

I myself am allergic to pet dander, mold, pollen, and bananas.

Note to self: ask doc at the next check-up.

Sell me on tattoos.

You could get one of Ricardo Montalban (Mr Roarke)standing next to Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo) who is pointing to the sky.... That way you can show people your Tattoo Tattoo.....

I can't sell you on tattoos, you either understand or you don't...just like piercings...

You probably already have a full "Yakuza suit" you sneaky canine, but no one can see it under all the fur. :)

FWIW, In RL, I've been considering getting a couple tattoos too, but I don't think I could sell you on any of the ones I've been looking at... unless you would like butterflies and flowers.

Oh man, where do I start? I have about 15 now, I think. My right arm has a full sleeve that I finished up in Japan. It has a skull up top surrounded by flowers and then an Oni on my forearm. My other forearm has a playing card style Vlad Tepes stabbing the queen opposite him. I have a sparrow on my left arm that I got in Hawaii after sailing 5000 miles (traditional Navy thing).

My two best pieces (I think) are on my legs. My left leg has an Art Nouveau style Grim Reaper with a dead woman draped over his arm. My right leg has a Jack Skellington holding a pair of scissors in one hand and the decapitated head (via the scissors) of Sally in his other.

All together I've probably been under the needle for around 60 hours (at least).

Thanks. Sorry I tried to expand beyond my own ignorance.

I only have 4 tattoos. I have a sacred heart with a dagger stabbing through it and banner saying "Amor Fati". A mermaid my best friend drew for me. The words "Girl I will take your breath away" above something I cant say as it isnt PG-13 :P and I just have my right forearm started with a chinese dragon emerging from smoke.

I don't really have a story, per se, but I have a close relative that's a dermatologist. He recently told me there's alot of money being made in tattoo removal. Since it's elective and generally not covered by insurance, they basically charge whatever people are willing to pay and they don't have to deal with insurance.

A couple of interesting tidbits he shared: most of the tats they're removing are 10-15 years old and come off the areas of the bady that are difficult to cover or potentially embarrassing (he mentioned the pelvis area specifically).

Okay, interesting story about my second tattoo.

I lived in New Mexico at the time in a town without a tattoo shop so I booked an appointment in Lubbock, TX (about 2 hours away). I had the artwork I wanted and my friend and I drove over to the shop and I was all set to get my tattoo. Well, I had forgotten about the difference in time zones when you cross over the TX border and I ended up an hour late to my appointment. The shop understood my predicament but the artist who had booked the appointment had left for the day thinking I was a no show. They scheduled me an appointment with another artist, but I had to wait a little. No problem.

Now the piece I wanted was from the Book of Nod. If any of you guys are familiar with White Wolf canon, you might recognize the illustration I ended up getting tattooed on my left arm. The piece is an illustration of Caine pulling his beard thinking of how he can make Zillah love him. He pulls his beard so hard that it bleeds, and the blood runs down and in the illustration it turns in to a forest with a figure running through the trees.

I was originally told the piece would cost about $120. They went ahead and kept that price, but the piece took 3 hours-ish to complete. This was about 10 years ago, but 120 bucks was still cheap. Nowadays tattoos are often charged by the hour and usually run over $100 an hour. Needless to say the artist who did my tattoo was drastically underpaid. He took it out on me in my tattoo. That figure running through the trees? Yeah, he turned it in to a very erect penis (the legs were the dangly bits) that was made (luckily) from negative space. It had the hands and legs and feet from the illustration and because it was on my arm it was pretty hard for me to see, even with a mirror. It was pointed out to me and became incredibly obvious, so I scheduled an appointment at the shop, but the guy who had given me my tattoo didn't work there anymore. They filled it in for free, though.

"The plane ! The plane !"

:D

My friend is willing to give me one, but I have to go to Milan for her to do it. Thinking about a lobster claw on each forearm, to reflect my spirit animal.

GAHH!! Not Cool!! I'm glad to hear that the tattoo parlor rectified the situation for you, though.

Liberty's Edge

I've considered getting a tattoo in the past, but the price for the size of designs I've developed has always stopped me. It can get pretty expensive when the level of detail demanded require that it cover my entire back. Who knew how difficult it would be to portray Michael the Archangel leading the heavenly hosts to Armageddeon. That, and I guess I just don't see it being worth that much to me yet, which probably means it doesn't mean enough to me yet.

Then again, it could be that guitar I'm planning on buying...

Liberty's Edge

I don't have any tattoos. Yet. But I do design a lot of them, mostly for friends.

Examples: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

However, before you make any kind of decision, you must read my latest journal on DeviantArt.

My brother's tattoo was misspelled by the tattoo artist (despite pretty specific instructions *and* having it on paper right in front of him). As it replaces an E with an I, a much narrower letter, in the middle of a word, it would be hard to have it fixed without looking silly. It's also on my brother's forearm, so it's in a fairly obvious place.

My brother took this in stride, though, and he's keeping track to see whether anyone notices and calls him on that. In 10 years, only one person has said anything about it.

Put me in the always wanted, never have done yet, bin.

I'm waiting for a splash of inspiration to co-inside with some ready cash.

Probably a dragon of some type.....

Yeah, they were pretty cool about it. Lesson learned: Research your tattoo parlor before you get the tattoo!

Portales! I was at ENMU at the time. You from the area?

I got my M.A. in Archaeology and Applied Anthropology from ENMU in 2003, but I actually attended the school in the late 90s (yeah, shouldn't leave and try to finish up the thesis remotely... adds WAAAAAAAYYYYYY to much time to both sides; yours and the committee's).

One of my great friends was in the Anthropology school, she graduated in 2001. Do you remember a Ryan Tubbs?

Yes, indeed! I absolutely adore Ryan! Devistatingly smart and very funny, she worked for me in the university curation lab.

Funny, I probably even saw you at one of her then boyfriend's gigs...

Are you talking about Dan? I lived with those two for a semester with Jodi (forgot last name), so odds are I probably did see you! I think Ryan just had a baby, and she blogs quite often on her Myspace, but we're not quite the friends we used to be. I'm sure she would like to hear from you, if you don't already keep in touch.

WOOF? =D

How would I sell you on them?

If you appreciate beautiful art and are into tribal expressions then you probably already follow tattoos. The tattoo artform is almost as old as the oldest profession...The iceman had tattoos at his acupuncture meridians. Perhaps tattoo artist is the oldest profession? LoL...(aka shaman)

For me, it's a modern primitive thing. I'm pierced and tattooed. As I stated before, if I could afford it, I would have a half suit within the year, I have the design in my head, just need about 20 grand to execute it.

I did not mean to sound disparaging by any means!

Shadow Lodge

I've got 11 tattoos...well on my way to 1.

I am an avid tattoo collector. I only have 15 tats. Finger, hands, one sleeve, arm, back, stomach, neck, side of head and legs. Always can have more. Two memorable ones, my wedding band and one to celebrate my son surviving cardiac arrest at 13! Otherwise, all my ink is just for fun.

Love the ink, and from where I am, not enough time or money to invest in them. Daaaaang.

I have three, a dragon on my left arm, a Wastem on my ankle from the satirical RPG HoL, and a Moorcookian chaos symbol on my right pec. I have entertained thoughts of getting a monkey tat on my right arm to balance the dragon (my two favorite creatures), but I haven't had the free time and/or cash.

I only have one at the moment. It is on my right upper arm. It cost me about 350 plus I gave the artist a 50 dollar tip. this was about 3 years ago and took him about 3 hrs. For me it is a memorial tatoo for my grandparents on my mother's side. It has a gothic cross as the center piece with a purple rose on the left side, a scythe on the right side almost on the back of the arm, a skull on the bottom, and a halo with angel wings on the top.
Now all I need is the money and I want to start a half sleeve on my left arm. Since I am a fan of history and mythology, I want to put a series of symbols like an ankh, omega sign, a few nordic runes, some celtic symbols and so forth. still need to come up with design before commiting.
Just as a side note I sat with idea for my first tatoo for five years before getting it. As my artist said He would rather you wait 18 years making sure you want it, instead of getting one and 18 years down the road regretting it.

Also a little tip I saw on a sign in the shop you get 2 of the 3 following choices: Fast, Cheap, Good
1)You can have it fast and cheap but it won't be good
2)You can have it fast and good but it won't be cheap
3)You can have it cheap and good but it wont be fast.

just some words from the wise

I've got one about the size of a large man's fist right between my shoulder blades. Its a half-and-half Autobot/Decepticon symbol, with a red glow from the Decepticon Eye, a blue glow from the Autobot one, and a jagged beam of white separating the two halves.

I've been a Transformer fan since I was waaay little (Had the origional dinobots standing on my 7th birthday cake). I alwasy knew I'd get a tattoo relating to it, but I waited until I was 100% sure (which ended up being at age 28).

My grandfather had passed away the December prior, and during the spanning months, my brother and I had noticed an uncanny resemblance between his face and the Autobot symbol. I had made more than my fair share of mistakes, some of which I'm still paying for, but my grandpa forgave them all and helped me deal with them every step of the way.

So, I got the tattoo in honor of him, a reminder of his kindness and faith in me, a reminder of my past foolishness, and of the fact that I can be better than I was.

I have four and am jonesing to go under the needle again very soon. All are on my left upper arm and I have been toying with a half sleeve to bring the design together. I just can't decide on what to do exactly.
Here is my MySpace page with my tats:
http://www.myspace.com/coffeesucker

How can I tie these together? I was thinking of putting in some bamboo with leaves and having water ripples (like from a pool) around the bottom. Thoughts?

Scarab Sages

I have two. A scorpion on my upper left arm (not colored in, just b/w), and a couatl making a circle (kind of an Ouroborus look) on my upper left arm (That one is in color).

I've got five so far. I don't see ever stopping.

Ironically I think my daughter now has more ink than me now.

I have two, a dragon snaking on my stomach and ribcage (based on a Dragon magazine cover)which I gave my self for my 30th birthday and a phoenix on my back.

I remember seeing a quote in a magazine from a tatooist "Don't do it til you hear the tattoo gods speak to you". I see a lot of 20 year old girls with very obvious tattoos because they are trendy...and I wonder if there is tattoo removal in their future

Have them do an allergy test patch. Really small. If you are it'll swell up and scab off.

I'm planning on getting a tattoo, but it's just so darn expensive.
I have the design I want and I want it on the side of my left calf.
I'm not sure whether I'll get any more tattoos once I get this one, frankly I'm too damn hairy to have anywhere to put them. :-p
Anyway, even though there are a lot of other people out there with the same design, I still want a tattoo of Pearl Jam's Aliveguy/Stickman (whatever he's called).
I'm a huge PJ fan and it also symbolizes a great many things to me, ranging from freedom, being alive and letting go to seizing the day. So it also has an emotional meaning to me and isn't just something that "looks cool" (although I do think it does that too :-D)

Liberty's Edge

Right now, there are three that are on my list. I'm planning on getting the Black Flag bars on my left biceps, with my take on the harDCore/straight edge logo above it. I'm also definitely going to get a slightly modified version of my Eagle Scout award over my heart. I may also get my Venturing Ranger award done somewhere. As someone who's wanted to get inked since the age of six, I'm definitely going to get as many tattoos as I physically can. Well, once I get the money.

Dark Archive

So if one were to get a Pathfinder tattoo upon ones self...would I be on some sort of copyright infringment??
