OK, I am not entirely happy with the preview of the races art in the blog. They look very cartoon-ish, not painterly like the beta. I know this is just a preview, but it does not look good to me.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
Has there been more word on the art?
Are we just out of luck about the art?

I'm confused as to your meaning. The races line-up in the Beta was not "painterly" at all, but rather looked like blocky cartoon characters. People complained, so we got a new line-up painted by Steve Prescott, which we showed off in the dwarf preview.
I'm not sure which preview you're referring to, so it's somewhat difficult to address your criticism.

Not sure what to say about this... since the art of the race lineup in the Beta was probably the single piece of art that drew the most complaints for being too cartoonish and not painterly, so for the final book we got Steve Prescott (the guy who did the covers for all of the Second Darkness Pathfinders, Dungeon Denizens Revisited, and several more of our covers) to create the artwork for the races for the final book.
Long story short, the races in the final book ARE in a painterly style and not cartoonish, and if that feels backwards, I suspect there's just confusion about the definitions of those styles?
EDIT: HA! What Erik said, but he hit ENTER 12 seconds before me.

Hey Erik and James, these cats are just haters is all. I liked both races art just fine, and admit that the final art is well...more polished.
People will always complain about art. My old DM hated with a passion all of Wayne Reynolds's work even though he is my personal favorite.
Plus I really like Nocticula. Any mature themed chronicles ideas brewing? I am reminded of the awesome Porphory House from Scuttlecove

Just another person piping in with love for both the old and new racial line-up art.
I really liked both, though I did prefer some individuals over their counterparts in the other pic: The old dwarf had more character, while the new elf looks more "right" to me. Both gnomes worked just fine for me, and honestly could have been the same gnome at different points in her life(they do get wilder as they age if they want to avoid the bleaching and all...). Same for the halfling and half-orc, both versions worked great. Gotta admit I prefer the older half-elf, but that new human's got it goin' on.
But yeah, I'm all for variety in the art.

Painterly probably was a bad word used.
To me from an art student who likes both anime and traditional styles I like the more hand drawn look. So I guess it maybe just personal bias. This style just reminds me - personally - too much of WoW. This same hand drawn-like art style also drew me to the 3.5 style.
I am sure the game will be just as good without the original style of art, but if I ever saw a thread talking down about it, I would sure as smerf been giving them a piece of my mind.
OH well, I still have 3 copies of the beta, 1 which is not in use, to look at.
That aside thank you for all your hard work!
P.S.
After looking over these various styles, I would have to say it is the texture that draws my eye. I think, personally, the texture is what draws my eye. This lack of texture seem more a kin to 3D figures of Wow than to the iconic character style of PF. I will morn looking at them in the PH, but oh well and good bye.
P.P.S
Oh I am an Art Student, not an English Student so yeah my vocabulary is rather horrible. Sorry.

I like both sets also, except for the drow elf in the beta set. I do think the new set is a bit 'peppier' than the rest of the artwork, but I think that has to do with them wearing very little in the way of clothing, which is where most of the darker aspects that are in the iconics come in.
If I had to complain about the artwork, it would be more along the lines of 'Would have preferred a male lineup and a female lineup'. Which has been complained about before.

I preferred the old art myself but being the minority, you accept these things as "tough ****"
I especially liked the old elf better then the new one. And all this crap about "WoW" elves is a bit off to me. As far as I'm concerned, WoW stole it from Record of Lodoss War which was just amazing.

While I am all for long ears, what really does the Golarion elves for me is their eyes. So, Lodoss ears + Merisiel eyes = teh win.
However, I am in deep love with art for Lyrie and Nualia in PF1. Paizo, please get that guy back and while at it don't take any art from however did page 40 of Dungeon Denizens (Purple Worm vs. T-Rex). Ewwwww.

Anyway just to add, the change to the racial preview art is a big reason I started to post in topics about people claiming they hate something about the game that I like.
Paizo (much to my dismay) seems to listen to people (which is a good thing). Problem is I didn't think twice about the preview art cause I liked it so had nothing to say. Now I'll defend anything I dig if for no other reason then to show that I like(d) it.
Now I DO have to say some of the new races look a little better(ish) such as the dwarf and halfing(maybe) ... but that's about where it ends for me. Maybe I'll cut out the pic from my beta book and glue it on the new set.
... tch, like I'd defile either book >_< Ah well, learn to live I guess.
(And once more, big ears FTW)

I just wish I could have had enough time to notice the apparent arguments against the old art. Between the war I ran for a better TWF, and pushing for more 3.5 style combat expertise and power attack, and real life having to take priority in my life, I just missed it entirely.
Sort of sad about it more than anything now, as we no longer have even an option now.

Ah well, better some art we don't care for over a game system we don't care for, eh? ^_^

Actually impression I'm getting is it is closer to a 50/50 split difference being that people don't generally speak up as much when someone likes something as opposed to when they dislike something. This sadly means about as many people are probably going to be displeased with this art as were with the old one.
(As a side note I preferred the old art as well.)
((as a second side note I actually find the new version to be more cartoonist very much in WOW style))

I like both, and liked the Beta one when it was in PF#3. I think more people will like the Final more though.
I like both as well (except for the new Gnome... I loved the old one so mmuch I based a character off it!).

I think we'll hate everything that isn't by Elmore, because it's too much anime and WoW.
And I hate Elmore because he can't ppoint pants on women. ^^That's the internet. We hate everything, but it's always worse than before, if something is changed.
Heh I was once told (by a designer who will currently remain nameless) that Elmore used to base every single female he did art of, or at least the primary one in an image, off of his wife. Which led to an odd looking first cover for "Daughter of the Drow".
For those slightly interested there is an hour long YouTube video somewhere with Elmore talking at a gallery showing that was recorded not to far from where I live, it was done in October. I think you have to search Larry Elmore Kendall College.
Also I've been torn on the new art. I liked the blocky look (especially for the dwarf) but the new looks good too. I did prefer the original gnome too.

We do need the "other half" though. :)
i.e., Female Dwarf, Female Halfling, Female Elf, Male Human, Male Gnome, Male Half-Elf. :)
Agree with this, that was the only part I was disappointed about with the race art was the lack of showing both genders.
