High level Beta PbP test?

Anyone going to run a high level PbP Beta test?

I might IF..."I don't make top32"...I would make a scenario, for 4 characters, I would run the same scenario for up to 3 groups, 4 linked encounters, level 20. Generic Pathfinder race/class. Standard gold, standard magic items. No role-play just play test.

If I miraculously make top 32, then my days from Jan 21-23 will be pretty busy. LoL

I will pony up to DM some encounters, if anyone is interested. We'll start at ninth level and work up a few combats per level. Like Xaaon says, no roleplay, just see what happens. I'd be particularly interested in seeing people overhaul characters between levels. fighter changes from 2 weapon to sword and board to 2 handed. Wizard changes specialty. Sorceror changes bloodline. Cleric swaps domain. etc.

Any takers?

Just a warning: in my experience high-level play-by-post/play-by-email games are very difficult to manage. People tend to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of possibilities available to their characters.

Having made that clear, I'd be interested in doing some playtesting (although I probably don't have the time to DM).

Scarab Sages

I'll play the fighters then, I'm interested in seeing how well they work at the upper levels. For the playtest they were looking for 13+ but 9 would be interesting regardless.

I'd be interested in playtesting a druid: I've heard a lot of people complain about how they're useless in combat, so I'd like to see that for myself. :-)

The Exchange

I'd love to be part of this as well. I would be interested in any class, really - whatever we need to flesh out a well-rounded group.

I'll jump in on this. I'm not married to a particular concept, so whatever we want to test, I'll make up if we get this rolling.

Liberty's Edge

In order for this to be useful, how often are we looking at being asked to post? The playtest as a whole closes in about a month, doesn't it?

Good points. We should probably flesh out the details of how to proceed fairly quickly. Some questions off the top of my head ...

1. What format (pbp, pbem)? I'm willing to set up a yahoo group if folks think that would be a good idea. Alternatively, can we use a thread on one of the Paizo these boards for pbp?

2. When to start? To gather any useful information, we should probably get started quickly (less than a week) since pbp/pbem tends to be slower than in-person play.

3. Generation rules? Of course, the beta base classes. 28 (or 30, 32?) point buy system? DMG standard gold for equipment? I would also suggest we stick to the beta for gear/magic to make the process a little less daunting.

Just a few cents worth of questions.

Yeah, I would think it would be only stuff from Pathfinder RPG personally.

I'll get started on a Fighter.

Sorry guys. Had trouble getting on and staying on to post yesterday.

Five is a good number of players.

Here's the scoop. PF Beta rules. Let's stick to the core classes please. 20 point buy. Standard Wealth (p. 293) Max HP at first level, no bonus HP, average HP per subsequent level. Unless you really want to, don't bother fleshing out non-combat aspects of the character.

Posting: I try to post at least 2, sometimes 3 , occasionally 4 times per weekday. Maybe once a day on weekends. It would be good if players can post at least 1 or preferably 2 times a day, just to keep things moving.

I'm in the eastern US time zone. I try to post morning, noon (a highly variable concept) and night. I can usually spend a lot of time on the computer Tuesday nights.

It looks like Xaaon is on for a fighter; Hogarth, for a druid. Preferences anyone?

Long term, my plan is to run 3-5 encounters per level, pretty much back to back, then we'll level up 3 levels and run another set of encounters.

We will not post in initiative order. Just post as you can and I'll sort it out at the end of the round. You may post if - then - else statements as contingencies. Don't get to fancy though or I'll probably mistake your intent.

Hi, Thom!

I'll claim the monk!

Sleepy's in for a monk.

Radavel! Are you just saying 'hi', stalking me , or asking me to create a sixth slot?

All will be revealed. See my last post in the other PBP discussion thread. I think you will like my suggestion.

What about crafting magic items? Do you get to buy things at half-price if you craft them?

hogarth wrote:

Let's just buy items. Since there will be no story constraints, the crafter would essentially start with double wealth if they could craft. Arcane bonded items being the exception.

I was planning on raiding the APs and Dungeon for scenarios. Anyone out there adverse to potential spoilers? If so, on what AP?

Scarab Sages

As there are no story elements, I see no problem with spoilers.

I'll go cleric, since we'll probably need more concentrated healing/condition removal and we probably don't want the poor druid doing that stuff instead of what really makes him shine.

By core classes, do you mean 20 level classes only, or only the classes and PrCs from the Beta rules? If no one else was picking up an arcane caster, I wouldn't mind making a mystic theurge.

OK, prestige classes too.

Liberty's Edge

I could work up a rogue, I think.

Shisumo's rogue, first draft

Nice, we'll give the others a couple of days and I'll figure out the first scenario over the weekend.

Grumble Grog wrote:

I went ahead and took glamered armor and a hat of disguise to look like a frail old wizard in a powerful looking robe...draw the opponents to me first...LoL (and hopefully keep them from trying touch attacks...)

OK, I have a monk written up under the Sleepy Monk alias. I really liked Shisumo's write-up so I used that format. If there is a different preferred format, please let me know and I'll be glad to make some changes.

Regretfully, I've got too much going on right now. I thought I'd have time to participate in this, but I'm not going to. I apologize if this throws off anyone's plans, but I didn't want to hold anyone up waiting for me.

I think we just need a cleric or wizard or sorcerer and we should be ready to roll...

Scarab Sages

If no one else jumps in I can run a cleric or wizard also.

Presenting Elmora...named for the Elmore painting she's taken from heh.

I'll finish her 9th level persona tonight so we can get started.

Looks good, all around. Since this is a playtest, I'll assume all the characters are fairly made, no checking. It's OK with me if Xaaon plays 2 characters, if no one else has an objection. Or if you know anyone else who's interested ask them.

Game Thread link.

If you need either, I'd be happy to play a cleric. If you're interested, I'll whip him/her up and be ready to go in a day or so.

Scarab Sages

cool, just gotta finish up Elmora's skills and equipment

If ye still need a <HIC> priest, then by Cayden, I'm yer man!

James, you're in. Get on the game thread.

Xaaon, Elmora is still in too. I want to see what an arcanist can do.
