Divs

Legacy of Fire

Liberty's Edge

I like the idea!

You can never have too many fiends, and these tie in really well with the feel of the setting - a better fit than most of the 'regular' fiends...

Go Daigle!

Woot! Glad to see all of your hard research paid off Daigle!

I'm crazy excited about the Divs!

I think it's awesome that Paizo has their very own unique group of fiends, based on real-world myths.

I hope to see these Divs in future Paizo products for years to come. The entire concept is so fresh, I'm just dying for the Legacy of Fire AP to start up so I can check them out.

And knowing Adam Daigle, these things are going to be off the charts cool. Daigle is an immensely talented writer and designer, and he's finally getting to strut his stuff for Paizo.

. . . and right out of the gate he invents an entirely new group of fiends loaded with potential.

Mmmm. I love me some new fiends.

These guys came out of the same library trip that brought shaitans to me and James's attentions. Soon after, Adam handed in a bunch of very cool high-level beasties for PF #24, so I offered him what few notes I had on divs and this ongoing project. And he's totally knocked it out of the park. I really couldn't be more pleased with the way these guys are turning out, and though they don't have much of a role in the AP, they bring a very epic and exotic feel with them that more Westernized demons or devils just don't. If you want to get a sneak peak of what's in store, just type "Rostam" into Wikipedia.

Divs also aren't the first nor the last new fiends we'll be seeing in the Pathfinder cosmology. Already we've debuted the first asura in Pathfinder #9. James has a whole hierarchy of protodemons in his head and I've got a few ideas for the role of daevas. At the same time, I've always felt that angelic creatures could take on more of a role for players, and you've already seen the initial steps into good guy "demon lords" and "archdevils" taken with the campaign setting's first few empyreal lords.

So yeah, there's a lot going on out in them thar planes, and they're totally not just the Great Wheel MrkII. But I'll let Todd tell you all about that in The Great Beyond.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Working on these guys has been a blast. I was already dabbling into Persian folklore when Wes made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, so the timing couldn’t have been better. I hope everyone enjoys the critters when they come out.

As Mothman said above, you can never have too many fiends.

Liberty's Edge

i say congratz somewhere else, but i repeat it here :)

Does that mean Vic owes you a "Contributor" tag?

Go Daigle! Keep up the good work!

The blog states that a new div will appear every month. What does this mean? One new one in the bestiary section for the 6 month duration of Legacy Of Fire, for a total of 6 divs?

The planes are large places. And you can never have too many fiends. :)

Can't wait to see these guys come out.

That means that in each Legacy of Fire volume (they come out once per month for 6 months), there will be a new div in the bestiary. At the end of Legacy of Fire, there'll be a total of six divs.

It means that once each month, a div will have its visibility tag set from "hidden" to "visible".

Okay, obscure HTML/CSS joke...

Frankly, I think the new div in the blog post is adorable. He's so happy!

Hello normally I am pretty quite on these boards. But thanks Adam, I have been immensely impressed by how you have represented the divs capturing their essence from folklore and translating that into creatures equally unique and affective in game play.

I was curious about the origins of the Doru div. The others I can readily see the threads for their geneses but the Doru escapes me. But hey maybe that is just it’s natural invisibility at work...

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

Thank you for the kind words, Renewal’s Plume. They were incredibly fun researching and developing.

As far as the doru goes, I actually didn’t have a specific fiend from Persian folklore that I based that one on. Someone else was originally going to do that one, but I ended up being able to do it as well. Doru, if my translations are correct and I am remembering right, is a Persian word for ‘lie’. So the creation of doru into whispering schemers seemed like a good fit. Also, mechanically we wanted the lowest type of div to be on par with imps and quasits. I was trying to find more for you in my notes, but they are being elusive at the moment.

Contributor

The doru came from one of my initial internet research into the divs - specifically from this page on Iranian Mythology. It came directly from these two references:

"Demons of the folktales may be many headed, or they may have only heads and no body. When thus handicapped, they roll rather than walk... "

Okay - me thinks - bodiless div. That's cool, that's cool. I do need a low level imp analog, and I don't want it to just be another capering little guy fiend. Some kind of little schemer guy. Hum hum...

"A list of ten demons is provided in the Šâh-nâma. These are, in order of importance, âz (greed), nîâz (need), khašm (wrath), rašk (envy), nang (dishonor), kîn (vengeance), nammâm (tell-tale), do-rûy (two-faced), nâpâk-dîn (heretic), and, although not explicitly named, ungratefulness (Šâh-nâma, Moscow, VIII, pp. 195-96)."

Nammam. That's cool. The name's meaning isn't terribly sinister though. Do-rûy, meaning "two-faced," that's pretty awesome. A dash and an accent mark, though? That's NEVER going to fly in layout. "Doruy," that's a little better, though the "y" makes it sound like a Pokemon. "Doru"... now we might be on to something.

And there it is.

My thanks, that is just what I wanted to know.
