Having just watched the interview on you tube and tried... I seriously tried to watch the doctor who confidential on bbc I... sorry I've posted a link to the interview below take a gander and then if you don't mind post your thoughts on this thread please.
If, please, God, he loses the horrendous hairstyle that looks like a cross between The Cure and Flock of Seagulls, he might actually be okay. He actually reminds me a little of Peter Davison in the face. And, thankfully, he'll be saying the words others write for him rather than speaking extemporaneously.
You've got to be kidding me. Is this a joke?
I've seen him in a few other roles, so I'll withhold judgement for now- I was just a bit disappointed that the rumor of Paterson Joseph becoming the first black Doctor fizzled out- I think he'd have been great.

I've never heard of this guy! What other roles on TV or movies has he been in???
Something about him starring in two movies with Billie Piper one called Ruby in the North or something like that been trying to find a clip with him in it currently only what I saw was on the BBC news when they were showing potential candidates on Saturday morning, I'm afraid when they first showed him in the dr who confidential I turned it off since I still can't see him as the best choice but there must be a reason for it, still trying to find out if anyone knows what that reason is.
I'm a skeptic so don't read this if you're more optimistic

Exactly... Every new Doctor is younger then the last, or at least appears to be, and well they went Emo meets Melrose place for this one. I hope he pans out or this will be the shortest Dr. in History because some one will stone him.

Skeptic or not, you are voicing a common sentiment. I have heard more than a few people express the concern that the biggest thing that the BBC sees in Matt is the potential of drawing in teeny bopper girls and the 90210 crowd.

I think this "90210" casting is a major problem in the entire TV/movie industry and it's beginning to ruin a lot of potential great shows. Look at the cast of the new Star Trek movie.*shudder*

I don't know what to think. On the one hand I hope he does a good job and will reserve judgement until I see him in action. On the other hand, I do wish that they had chosen someone who looks old enough to have a driver's liscence. I hope his voice doesn't crack when facing the Dalecks or Cybermen.
You have to admit....it would be a little funny to hear his voicecrack when confronting a CyberKing...

I am curious to know if any of the previous doctors have an opinion about this...
Of course, the original idea actually was that the Doctor would get younger with each regeneration. That was before the Doctor started dying "unnatural" deaths rather than aging out of wanting to play the role, however.
The new guy seems like a really nice chap, I remember him in 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl' with Billy Piper and he was ok in that. He has a real love and respect for the show and looks-wise -is interesting and quite appealing -he kinda of 'has youth' but what seems like an 'old soul' which is spot on for the role.
My only gripe is I hope they are NOT trying to simply replicate Tennant. I'd like to see the new lad play the Doctor in a 'Dorien Grey' stylee with a bit of venom and playful arrogance.
If I could of picked the Doctor I'd of chosen an older actor again, perhaps someone in the forties - fifties. Like Philip Glenister, only he's in that piece of crap 'Demons' show that has just started. Bah!
Google 'ITV DEMONS UK' or something like that and it's bound to pop up. Basically it's British low budget Buffy inspired rubbish that doesn't work.
The problem with all the hype that was drudged up to surround the casting of the new Doctor is that everyone had developed a favorite. So there is no way that everyone can be happy with the actor who is ultimately chosen. I think they made a wise move going with a relative unknown. What it boils down to, in my mind, is that Moffat is one of the best writers the show has had in recent years, and I have no choice but to give the man the bloody benefit of the doubt when it comes to casting. We trust you Stephen, I know you won't let us down!

He is young but I am glad that they kept the spirit of doctor who going... and without being racist or sexist, I am glad they did not make Doctor Who a woman or a non white man.
I hate it when politics and social whims get involved and spoil a good story!
Out of interest, why would either change "spoil a good story"?
Is there back material that shows the Dr can't/wont doesn't like to change into a non-(white male)?
I can see a lot of nice sub-plots having the Dr as a woman with a male companion, kinda like the way Katherine Tate's character bosses the Dr around, but could be taken a lot further....

or to use an old English/Australian colloquialism it just won't be cricket.
If anything bring back the left arm chinaman doctor who ;) :)

Tennant: 34
Smith: 28
(I did this quickly, using year of first broadcast minus year of birth, so their actual age on the exact date of their first broadcast is +/- 1.)
I think I like Matt Smith so far. The publicity photos are a bit stagy and emo, I guess, but he seems like a regular guy in the video I've seen. The praise heaped on him by Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat seems very genuine.

Appparently, they deliberately chose Hartnell's hairstyle, wardrobe, and makeup to make him appear a bit older than he was.

Age is definitely trending down since Eccleston. I would still like to see a middle-aged, portly Doctor just once. Might be difficult for him to run away from the Daleks though...
