If you will indulge me, fellow Lords of the Boards, I have a handful of random questions for you.

1. Other than Paizo, is there another online community which you are a member of? And, by a member of the community, I mean that you are a regular on the boards or a regular player in the case of an MMORGP and have a vested interest in that community.

2. Have you ever met up in real life with your online community? If so, how far did you travel to meet? What did you do? Was it a good experience? Was it worth the cost/time?

3. Have you ever organized an event described in 2? How did that turn out?

Thanks for your time.

Sebastian

1. The OotS website and I also play City or Heroes and the Civilization games.

2. I have met up some people who have played CoH/CoV, I have talked / e-mailed some people on this web site, plus I e-mail Mike McArtor on a regular basis.

3. Not at this point.

Though I wouldn't call myself a lord of the board, I do participate in one other board focused primarily on video gaming (but there's talk about every kind of gaming on there), Colony of Gamers. As here, I don't post that often, maybe a dozen or so posts a week, though I still feel there as I do here that I belong to the community.

As for the second question, I've met up with some Ottawa Paizoneans a couple of times, and it was nice to put a face to the aliases. There was no travel involved, and it was certainly good times (one meet up just to chat about possibly doing PFS, then next playing a PFS scenario).

I've never organized any meet-ups, though if there were ever some sort of Paizo gathering somewhere accessible to me, I'd want to go check it out. I remember folk talking about PaizoCon, but it'd be hard for me to justify a trip to the west coast, as cool as it would be.

1. Not so much, no. Who has the time?

2. Yes, with a few of the Ottawan Paizonians. Yes, it was worth the time. There are some great Paizonians in Ottawa.

3. We didn't really organize it. It just kind of came together.

No. Paizo has a unique attraction to me. I used to frequent the WotC boards, but never really cared. MMORPGs disgust me.

I have connected with gaming groups through WotC Gamer Connections, and after some unpleasantness it worked out rather well. We've been a steady group (plus growing through other local boards) for 3 years.

No, although I did participate in such events. I also helped get the D&D Gameday going at my FLGS and am now working on Pathfinder Society.

1. I used to be more of a regular at the Dragonlance forums, but, while there are many, many fine people there, there are some people that can be a bit . . . clannish (i.e. "why are you here if DL isn't the be all end all of your existance?").

I have always felt that Candlekeep was my home away from home. I still visit there fairly regularly, but I don't post nearly as often as I once did, mainly because, no matter how much I love the place and the people, I just don't feel like discussing the latest, constant, gratingly irritating moves that WOTC has perpetrated upon the Realms.

As I said, though, the people there are great, including such luminaries as Brian Cortijo (who is going through Herculean efforts to try and make some of the setting events make some kind of sense, which I can appreciate).

2. I met up with a few of my Candlekeep friends at Gen Con this year, which was really nice, and I got to meet a few of the Paizo regulars this year as well (though I didn't get much of a chance to talk with them due to, well, all of us running PFS events at the same time).

3. Nay, I have never been the organizer of said events, nor the initiator of a "lets meet up here" kind of situation.

1. I participate in a message board about the Computer Wargame The Operational Art of War.

2. Yes, some one I new from the wargame message board was worked as a trucker and happened to be coming to town so we arranged to get together. It was a fairly good experience.

3. I have never actually organized such an event.

1. I read the Character Optimization board at the WotC web site. I used to participate in the Core Coliseum on the WotC web site until it died.

2. No.

3. No.

Oh. Another one.

Gavgoyle sent me his extra copy of Revenge of the Kobold King. I know it isn't the same as meeting but it was snailmail ... almost the same thing ;-).

Here's the scoop:

1. No. Paizo is the only message board I've ever truly felt comfortable posting on. I've tried boards over at WOTC, Upper Deck, CBS Sportsline, etc., but they all end up turning into flame wars.

2. I did meet up with a couple people via the Gamer Connection board. We played a few sessions before real life interrupted it: My wife became pregnant, and one member of the group moved.

3. Never organized. I don't think there are that many folks on these boards that live in or near Cleveland/Akron, Ohio.

Hope this helps!

1. Yes. A Birthright play-by-email game I’m DMing, but which seems to be slowly dying because of player turnover. :-( Also birthright.net.

2. Yes, I met the two British players of my Pbem game at Gencon UK. I was going to that event anyway, and asked if they wanted to meet there. We also just chatted about the game I’m running and learnt more about each other’s RL. Rich Baker was WotC’s main guest this time (and co-creator of the Birthright setting), so we took advantage of the chance to bug him… I mean, ask questions, about the setting. I’d say it was worth it. There was no extra cost to meeting them because I’d have been at the event anyway, but they had to travel about 80-100 miles (I’d travelled about 180 to get to Reading). I think they enjoyed meeting, and I’m usually on the phone once or twice a week to one of them as a means to bounce ideas for my game. It was also pretty cool meeting some of the Paizo regulars and Paizo staff.

3. Other than suggesting meeting at Gencon UK, no.

And here’s a counter-question:
4. Why do you ask- are you considering meeting some Paizonians? That’s what’s implied. It seems unlike you to be lacking confidence! ;-)

Oh, I also play in three play-by-email games and I DM one (Shackled City).

1. Used to run one, was a regular on several others. Now I hang out here almost exclusively.

2. Twice; though I have a rule I never meet with anyone from the internet, I broke it because a) he was a local b) my wife wanted to come c) the second time he was actually with a friend and wasn’t meeting me, per se.

I think both times it was maybe a 15 minute trip (we live near DTW). Lunch both times. It was…ok, I guess. Most of the people I know online I either already knew in real life, or are you guys (who I would probably break my rule again for). I’m not sure if it was worth it, but then I’m not a social person.

3. No.

As a serf of the boards, I would prefer one site to ‘hang’ at. For a longtime that site was the WOTC site, later with the edition change I came here, but still don’t feel like I fit in. I have looked at the OOTS site, but tend to just read the comic rather then the forums. I have started to spend time at Kobold Quarterly and the RPG tools forums, but have not really become a regular at either.

While at the WOTC site, I saw that another poster was from my area, so I sent him a personal message to see if he wanted to meet up. All went very well and I now play in his D&D 3.5 game.

In theory, I am in charge of organizing a yearly convention. But, attendance was light when I started and all my efforts to increase it have not gone very far. Let’s just say that I have concluded that organization of an event is a cross-class skill for me.

Hope this helps.

Yes. Most of my MMO playing falls into the "ultra casual player" field, so I don't have a particular interest in the community.

Yes. GenCon Indy 2007 - my DDO guild and other players met up and played games at Jillians. Much fun. Excellent experience, definitely worth it.

No...but I did lend a wee bit of help to Timitius for PaizCon. Turned out pretty damn good I think.

I think a post-game powwow would have been fun, allow some of us running the same scenario to compare notes.

Since you include MMOs... I play WoW and lead a guild that is getting fairly sizable. And, while it would be considered less a "community" and more of a "gigantic Metropolis", I also have a MySpace.

Outside of PaizoCon :), I have only done so for MySpace friends. My WoW guild has discussed meetups quite a bit, but nothing has ever materialized. A combination of sloth, penury, and annoying IRL responsibilities tends to prohibit a lot of cross-country travel.

Sebastian wrote:

I've never really had to organize. All of the meetups I have been involved with, being MySpace friends, were always socially-oriented and not gamer-oriented. Therefore we didn't have "events", we just went out. Or hung out. It wasn't a convention-type atmosphere, because it's just a friend visiting.

As far as how they turn out, they are always a lot of fun. You usually find out new facets of your friends that do not come across over a text based medium (or even a phonecall), because you build up an idea of a person that has a limited connection to the reality of that person. However, I am usually pleasantly surprised to discover that the difference between my mental image is not nearly as far off from the reality as one would think.

Liberty's Edge

Other than here, i'll post occasionally on penandpapergames, look in on candlekeep from time to time, read OotS (but not post there, don't care for the vibe, frankly), have a myspace (but not a facebook, i rarely even log into my myspace, don't need two social networks i rarely log on to), and a profile on ESPN (on which i'm sporadically active, although i do track my various fantasy sports teams). I also participate in the chat set up by Lilith occasionally (moreso lately).

As far as meeting people, my gaming group consists of people i've met here and two people i knew already.

Dark Archive

Well I almost exclusively post on this site, But.. I have been playing DDO since beta testing and have at least one character on all the servers. Unfortunatly I dont socialize too much on DDO and usually avoid the forums. DM'd a group in colorado for 10 years, but have recently moved to Missouri and been unable to find a good group.
Helped organize a few game days at the local comic shop when I was in colorado.8)
