Hey fellow Paizo fans. I'm looking to playtest the Pathfinder Beta ruleset, and I can't seem to get my usual face-to-face buds interested. So, I want to start up a PbP here on these wonderful boards. I've played via e-mail and message board before, but this will be my first attempt at DMing. Still, I've been lurking for awhile, and I've checked out many of the really great games taking place around here. I think I've got what it takes to do a good job (friendliness, commitment, flexibility, creativity). I've been playing D&D since the red box basic days (not to mention lots of other RPGs), so I've got lots of overall experience under my belt.
I think the character level I want to go with is in the 4th-5th range, and I want to jump in with one of the PF modules, since I'm not so great at writing my own. So, that leaves us with the choices of...River Into Darkness, Flight of the Red Raven, or Tower of the Last Baron. I have them all, they're all great, I'd be happy to run any of them. I'd like some feedback from interested potential players as to any preference amongst the three. I should also mention that if this initial module goes well, I'd be open to running one of the APs...Legacy of Fire really has my interest piqued, so if we can keep a group together through to next spring, that could be on the table.
Anyway...five players sounds about right, I'm thinking. So, if you're interested, hop on in and introduce yourself. I'd be interested in hearing about your RPG experiences as well as module preference, posting availability, prospective character role (tank, blaster, etc.), or anything else you really want to share.
Okay, I'll shut up now. Somebody else talk.

Hi..I'm an experienced player...since the white box days with a load of experience under my belt in just about any system you care to mention..I'm currently running two and playing in three more game here but I can easily find the time for another post or two a day
I have a couple of characters I havent had use for yet..due to their games collapsing earlier and I'd like to use one of them..she's a witch the variant sorcerer class from the 3.5 DMG( which concentrates on charms, summoning and healing) but it shouldn't take much to convert her to PF..basically just lose a clerical domain and gain a bloodline. If thats ok with you I'll revise her and present her here in the next couple of days.
I have no real preference for which module we play as I don't have any of them and will be approaching the scenario blind.Tower of the Last Baron sounds interesting though

Very interested!
As for my PBP experience, I run two games, and play in five or more. I have a bit of a thing for Paizo and pathfinder; both of my games use the Beta rules.
I would ideally like to play a caster of some sort. Bard, cleric/rogue, sorcerer or wizard/rogue could work for me!
My game Strange Loops is an all-caster party, and it seems to work for them.
In terms of modules, I would really like to play Tower of the Last Baron.

Great, we've got some interest already! :)
Wellard: I don't think I would have a problem with you using your witch. Keep in mind that I don't know the Beta ruleset well, though, and I'm hoping this game will allow me to get familiar with it. For that reason, I don't want people to go TOO far off the beaten path. Still, as the witch is just a slightly modified sorcerer, it should be okay. I'd love to see more.
hogarth: A cleric, always a good thing! Any more detailed thoughts? Race? Role? Deity?
xdahnx: Another caster sounds fine, especially one with a bit of roguery splashed in. Just to be clear, are you interested in playing only if we go with Tower of the Last Baron, or would you still play one of the other two modules as well?
I'm delighted that my post has generated interest from such experienced Play-by-Posters. That bodes well. :)

I was thinking of either a hulking cleric of Gorum (from the Land of the Mammoth Lords) or an elven cleric of Irori (seeking to perfect the art of archery).

Generating interest is the easy part (heh, heh). :-)

Well, I'd be up for any of the modules, really. I'd probably make a different character for each of them. The rogue-y type I would like to use in a Tower game, I'd make a prissy bard or a rough-and-ready ranger for a River game (thinking katherine hepburn or humphrey bogart from 'African Queen' as inspiration, respectively), and I'd probably make a wizard for the raven game.
I haven't read any of them through, but I have enough of an idea to think about flavour!
thereal thom
Tim, if you've an opening I'd like to play. I'm willing to play any class. (Leaning to fighter. Looks like the beta changes are pretty nice to me. Don't inderstand why so many people are so down on it. )
Pretty consistent poster. Given to occasional absences of 1-3 days maybe twice per month, but will notify you up front. Going away this weekend in fact. I'll be back Tuesday.
I am playing in several other PbP, so if you're oversubscribed just cut me. I don't want to hog all the PbP fun.

I'd like to give it a try, what timeframe will you be doing the most posting? I can access a little at work, then after work pacific. And thought the day at various times during the weekend.
I haven't participated in a PbP yet.
I have been playing since 83 =)
I've also been running some beta through Crown of the Kobold King.
I don't have any of the modules you want to run, Though Last Baron piques my interest the most.
I prefer to play interesting characters, I'd be keen on trying out a wizard at that level, or possibly a bard with a few wands (and a wand rifle! hehehe)
But if there's no melee, I want to try a two-weapon fighter. Or possibly a Paladin using his weapon as his divine bond.
Khaladon
Tim, looks like you may already have a full boat, but if you have room for one at the oars I'd love to join your band of merry man & ladies? I play with Wellard on one the games he DM's as well as several others on here. Always have time for one more though! ;-)
I too hearken way back to the early days of D&D and AD&D, had a long Hiatus as well, and am now back with a vengeance. Don't have any of the modules but they all sound interesting. Am thinking of playing either a bard or ranger this time around but am eminently flexible to what the party needs. If you're full up, no worries I understand. But maybe you could put me on a back-up list?
(PS, while this seems a good group already and I'm certainly not trying to jinx anything, experience has shown that on PbP's you can usually count on one or two dropping out, for whatever reasons, so having one or two extra usually doesn't hurt ;-)
PS Love the Avatar name! ;=) You're not living in Australia by any chance are you??

Tim, I would be interested in Flight of the Red Raven, if that is the module you choose to run and you have room. I've already read Tower of the Last Baron and am currently playing in a PbP game of River Into Darkness. I am an old-school D&Der, but I am fairly new to 3.5 (and PFRPG), however I have been playing PbP for a few months now.
I have an idea for a half-orc bard...

Right on, fellas! Six people interested, so that's five PCs and one Alternate. Plus, two votes for Tower of the Last Baron, so I think we have a winner! Infiltration and intrigue, should be a hoot!
So, at a glance (with nothing at all set in stone)...
The Piren's Bluff Five
Wellard - Witch (sorcerer variant)
hogarth - Cleric (of Gorum? Irori?)
xdahnx - roguish caster of some stripe
thereal thom - Fighter?
Pathfinder X - Wizard? Wand-rifling Bard?
Khaladon - First Alternate
Other specific comments...
hogarth: Man, either one of those cleric ideas sounds kick-@$$, so I'll be happy to see what you come up with in either case.
xdahnx: You win! Tower it is! :)
thereal thom: Welcome aboard, yet another familiar name and (ghostly) face, as I've been lurking about. You're allowed to hog, thom, because I want you for this game, so there. Talk to you on Tuesday when you get back.
Pathfinder X: Newb to PbP? Cool, here's your big chance! I'll be posting at all sorts of random times, which is the beauty of PbP, because it doesn't really matter when you post. In general, you guys should look for at least one post per weekday, and probably on average one post per weekend (more likely Sundays than Saturdays). Your character ideas are solid, so just let me know as your thoughts coalesce.
Khaladon: Regrettably, I think I'm going to have to draw the line at 5 PCs. I just fear getting in over my head with any more than that. But, you're most assuredly first on the alternates list. If anyone has to drop out, you've got dibs. As for the avatar name, I'm not living in Australia, but rather the USA. Really, the name was just me trying to come up with something goofy and unique. Why do you ask, am I missing an Aussie reference or something?
Alrighty, I think we'll leave things there for now. If anyone else wants to throw out their name as an alternate, please feel free to do so! I'll fire up a Discussion thread soon, but in the meantime, let's keep talking about PC ideas.

Ninja'd by Rimrock, agh!
Well, as you can now see, I've decided to go with Tower of the Last Baron, sorry. I'd still be happy to put you down as an alternate if you don't think reading the module has spoiled things for you. Let me know!
Nah, it's cool. Tower of the Last Baron looks like a really fun module, though. I'll be following the game with interest,
Khaladon
All well and good Tim, and Thanks! I'll be patiently waiting and watching on the side-lines...or Hey! Maybe if you get enough interest you could run Another module simultaneously? Like say the one Rimrock wants for example?? Just a thought =)
And no no, your choice of name and your writing style just reminded me of a good buddy of mine living down in Aussie land right now :)

Hogarth here's the blurb from the catalogue
Last Baron infiltration adventure for 5th-level characters.
After years of neutrality, the honeyed tongues and diabolical gifts of devil-worshiping ambassadors from Cheliax have finally convinced Baron Vendikon of Andoran to pledge his allegiance to the enemy. Now, as the baron’s conflicted subjects hastily fortify his position and a reluctant Andoren general marches on the tiny town of Piren’s Bluff, a few brave souls must infiltrate the tyrant’s stronghold and put an end to his treason before one man’s arrogance costs hundreds of innocent lives.

All righty, responses for everyone!
hogarth: The catalogue text regarding the module should be helpful (thanks Wellard!), and here's a little more to get you started. Character level is 5th, and we'll be using the fast xp progrssion, so that means 10,000 xp. Wealth will likewise be standard per the rules, so at 5th level that amounts to 10,500 gp worth of equipment (magical and mundane) to start. I think I'll cap any one single item at around 3000 gp (give or take) to keep things balanced. Stats will be done by a High Fantasy (20 point) buy to begin, then adjust for race level-up and any relevant equipment.
As for the location, the town of Piren's Bluff is situated right on the border of Andoran and Cheliax, and it in fact is an important strategic pass between the two hostile nations...this is the seed of the plot. I think the action will actually begin in Olfden, though, which is in the south of the Darkmoon Vale region of Andoran. From there, we'll move things over to Piren's Bluff, once the stage has been set. More on this later. If any of you have the guide to Darkmoon Vale, this is a good resource for the geographic area, and will be handy for making a background, if you like.
Rimrock: Okay, then. Have fun lurking!
Dax Thura: Sorry for your luck, but you'll be the second alternate. Thanks for popping in!
Khaladon: It's tempting, but for now I just want to focus on getting this one game off the ground. But who knows? Maybe if things go well and I feel that I've got time, I'll consider a second game. If I do, you'll be first to know!
Wellard: Thanks for posting Andrea so quickly. I'll take a closer look at her soon, and share my thoughts.

I'll get started on my character ASAP, I have a game to run in about 12 hours, so it'll be after that.
I'm looking forward to this =)
edit: I started a little bit on the character. Name, race, class, etc, rest to follow
Halfling Bard 5 currently
couple questions, partial charged wands? less? so I could take a 30 charge 2nd level spell wands for 60% of cost? since I'd like to have 2 2nd level wands to use in my wand rifle if I go that route. or could I use eternal wands from the Magic item compendium?
2nd question...hit points...are you going to keep track of them? If we are trackign them, are we doing racial modifier or what?
Thanks

Hi, guys,
Tim, "Baron" sounds good. I'll get cracking on the fighter, probably have a draft for you tomorrow night. Since this is a play test, are you looking mostly at rules or do you see this as a role-play too? If it's primarily a rules test I'd like to use one build for a few encounters, then rework him for another few just to look at a 2-hander v. 2 weapon v. sword and board. If you're thinking primarily role-play I'll go 2-handed; I haven't played a power figther in years.

2-handed fighters are pretty brutal at low-level with over-hand chop, it won't be as bad at the upper levels, but low-level it's brutal, I have a 20STR barbarian in my crown of the kobold king playtest campaign, while raging he does massive dmg.

Hopefully someone can help me out here. I haven't found the table with feats and ability score boosts by generic level in the beta rules, (pdf has its drawbacks) OR has that all gone by the wayside and the class level chart tells all?
Xaaon, glad to know you've got a power-combat character out there. Please take a look when I get my first draft posted and let me know what you think.

Conveniently hidden in the Barbarian write-up. Thanks!!

Yeah, the beta definitely needs some better structuring, tables are scattered all over. Sometimes the tables don't even have a title over it. Like the table for the necklace of missiles, which is a page-turn before the description and has no title. If you're not familiar with the item, you'd never have a clue.

Paellat Silvertongue arrives in Piren's Bluff. He looks around with disdain and hopes the trip is worth it.
"Now where is my contact?" he mutters to himself.
He notices the stares of the townsfolk, as he sits astride his Jackal.
"I hope this makes a good tale" he whispers to Ka, as he strokes the canid's sleek coat.

Here's Jon, hard-bitten mercenary. He still needs to go shopping and have a life, but at least he's statted out. Tim, of course, can check him for conformance to the rules, but I'd also appreciate anyone's suggestions as to feats and skills. I will listen respectfully, but won't guarantee to accept any if they significantly alter the character concept.

I think Jon and Guligak will get along just fine! :-)

A snarl -- or is it a smile? -- splits Guligak's scarred face.
"I have come to this land of soft southerners to make the weak strong and the strong BLEED, all for the glory of Gorum!" He whirls his greatsword about his head wildly.
"So tell me, small one -- are you weak or strong?"
*Pae looks at the scary human with no fear in his heart*
"Strength is an illusion"
"Sand can tear the flesh off of a dragon in a sand storm, while the dragon can melt the sand on the dune" he riddles "So which is stronger? The sand or the dragon?"

"What good is a sword against a bow?"
"What good is a bow, when a man with a knife stands behind you?"
*glances behind the giant of a man*

Guligak nods approvingly without turning around. "I am a great teacher. One threat of a beating, and I have already taught you to throw away foolish talk about sand in favour of sensible talk about knives and bows. Maybe there is hope for you yet, with a great teacher like me to knock some sense into your soft skull."

Jon Anthoni
In a none too swank dive, Jon Anthoni sat considering his half-empty mug and his ever-lightening purse. Rumours of action had drawn him to the town in search of cowardice, conflict, and combat -- and their exploitation for profit. He made his living dealing in these commodities. To the cowardly employer he was a shield. For the weak in conflict, he was a sword. And if it came to combat, he was death to his employer's foes.
Unconsciously he lifted his eyes from his mug and scanned the room, before dropping them back down. "The townsfolk don't seem confident in the Baron. And that otyugh-spawned officer at the gate was too high-handed. Someone to leave his troops out a limb when the axeman comes."
"If it's as bad as all that, and the baron knows it, he should be paying well. On the other side, if the Andorens are really determined, noone around here is going to stop them."
"The trick is to pick the winning side." he thought to himself. "Then I can keep the profits."
Andrea Greenholt
Andrea wove her way through the common room her hips waving as she avoided the worst of the pinchers and gropers.
"No touching without money up front boys..you know the rules"
Spotting a likely target she slid into the seat beside him her smile fixed as usual
"Goddess I have to get out of this life before I begin to hate men for being men" she thought as the old standard issued from her lips
"Hello Sweetie...buy a girl a drink?"

So our DM last posted 8 days ago..is this game going to happen you think?
I don't know. I played in a game once where everyone was really excited and started posting IC in the discussion thread before the DM got the game thread going. And then we were delaying storyline with a lot of character interaction. We had a great time. The DM disappeared. Hopefully Tim is just on a short break.
