Paladin: The Holy Warrior / Crusader and the Mounted Warrior / Knight

Classes: Cleric, Druid, and Paladin

There is a very positive trend of giving classes at least two 'paths' along which they can advance. The Ranger can become the super-archer, or the super-dual-wielder, Sorcerers can chose bloodlines that differentiate them and so on.

I think such an approach would work well for the Paladin. The Paladin is particularly tied to two social roles, that of the holy warrior and that of the mounted warrior (knight). At the moment, the Paladin is mechanically geared to being the holy warrior, but apart from the mount, does not receive any actual abilities that would help him in mounted combat.

Personally, I would welcome it if Paladin did receive such abilities. Since, gaining holy and mounted abilities might overpower him, it could be a better approach to let him have a choice of abilities at given levels, with some geared towards mounted combat and others towards holy combat. These need not be set path that are impossible to switch between once the Paladin choses one - he could just as easily be allowed mix and match the abilities depending on what he choses at what level. This kind of approach would, among other things, also help to differentiate Paladins of a given level from one another.

Makes sense.

I mean, the mount itself gets special abilities and improves with level, but it would stand to reason that the paladin's ability with the mount could go up as he advances levels too.

It all depends on whether you see the paladin's mount as an entirely separate creature or a useful class ability. Hard to say for sure.

I think regardless of whether one views the mount as a useful class ability or an entirely separate creature, the Paladin ought to be given the choice to improve his own riding/mounted combat capabilities. Paladins are embodiments of the two above-mentioned archetypes and thus it simply fits the flavor to let the Paladin follow the path of a mounted warrior should he chose to do so.

Any thoughts on what the Paladin should be able to chose as his 'Mounted Combat' abilities? I am undecided whether feat choices along the lines of those Rangers and Monk get would be the way to go or if it would be even better to design unique abilities for this purpose.
