I think V got hit by a charm monster from the imp. The effect is mentioned right before the fight with the big devil, then V passes up an opportunity to gloat, and now this.
Or, he's just acting out and getting the damn plot back on track, which is nice. I am sick to death of the blue man group.
That may be (the charm monster bit), but as Jal Dorak was saying V certainly seems to be going through some type of shift or change. Whether it's into a PrC or an alignment shift isn't clear yet.
Compare the old V to the slightly changed V to the one that was in todays strip.

I'm just curious. Where are you seeing reference to a charm monster there? I just poked back through the strips and I'm not seeing it.
Personally, I just see V's current action as nothing but the logical outcome of his perceived failures in the battle against Xyklon, his obsession with locating his friends, and his frustration at his magic still not solving all of his problems. Oh, and sleep(or the elven equivalent) deprivation.

My thought was that this was an abuse of the elven revere ability.
V hasn't been sleeping (or whatever elves do) since Roy died.

584, Lien says "[The imp's] voice implied that [he] had used Charm Monster many times, which fit in with the unusual acquatic humanoid attacks that the fleet has been suffering."

I'd be happier if I was wrong re: the Charm Monster. I'm not a huge fan of having characters do something "out of character" and having that explained by being charmed/replaced by a skrull/possessed/etc. It would be nice if V were shifting alignment naturally, but there seems to be enough attention paid to the Charm Monster ability that I think it is in play.
That being said, the Giant has a history of twisting expectations (e.g., Roy's booty talismen not saving his bacon), so I would not put it past him to telegraph the Charm Monster scenario for V only to have Durkon/Elan/some NPC be charmed instead.

I'm not sure I'd call it an alignment shift. Is 'crazy' an alignment?
Out of curiosity, maybe we can play a game. Let's put out some descriptors for V and see what alignment we get. I'll start.

Remorseless
Power-Hungry
Obsessive
I think this would work better if you put a link for each adjective to a strip that shows that quality.

Vaarsuvius is a fairly high level elven wizard. His WILL save versus charms is freakin' unreal. I don't think he is under a charm monster. I think he is suffering from extreme insomnia/sleep/revere deprivation.
He's obsessed with getting Roy back and saving the world (go figure) and the stress and lack of revere if beginning to wear away at him. If I recall during revere, elves re-live their memories...were I Vaarsuvius I wouldn't want to relive any of the last battle.

The sleep deprivation could be the perfect justification for him failing his Will save...
Plus, as Elan frequently points out, dramatic convenience is a powerful force in OotS. V's Will save is irrelevant.

Indeed. To paraphase Elan, 'Rolling a ten happens half the time. Rolling a 1? That's a sure thing.'
