So, I admit it, I went whole hog with 4e. I got caught up in the "shiny". I'm a Leo, it's what I do. :)
But now I see the serious flaws everyone was talking about.
Now we are the cusp of Beta's release and, despite the fact I said I wasn't interested in an alternate version of 3e, I find myself excited beyond belief.
What if I love it? What if this dalliance with 4e just proved to me that PFRPG is truly the game I am looking for?
Will I be accepted back into the Pathfinder community? Can I move out of the 4e forums to nicer home in the Pathfinder forums? Will I find the love and respect of my peers on the Paizo boards again? Will all my sins be forgiven?
<dramatically places wrist to forehead and falls to comfy couch>
Seriously though, I am getting really excited about this release. I think 4e might have shown me how fantastic 3e really was. Sure, I might play 4e every so often but I am starting to think PFRPG might be the game I have been looking for all along. I think I might have been.....wrong (boy, that's hard to say).

It'll pass.
Honestly, though, why can't you have both?
No, it really won't pass. Trust me. All of my joking aside, 4e is not the right game for the type of campaigns I want to run. It took some comparison play, some conversation with friends and people here, and a good amount of thought before I came to this conclusion.
Like I said, I am sure I will play 4e. But in a long term campaign? Not likely.

Hmm let me think about it ... umm ... absolutely.

WOW!!! Someone on the internet admitted they were wrong. Maybe there's hope for the internet afterall. Maybe it just starts with one person admitting they are not perfect. Maybe now the Internet can be that better place, that utopia we were all promised as a child. Maybe, just maybe, the flying cars are not far behind.

<grin> Thanks for noticing.
Seriously, I know 3e pretty well. I never hated it but I never fell in love with it either. I thought it was a good system but I had some issues.
What I saw of the Alpha PFRPG, coupled with the Beta previews in the blog, makes me think I am going to like it. I have to look it over to be sure.
Right now I feel like my choices are 1)find a new game entirely, 2) go back to 3e, or 3) go to PFRPG. I am not going to be using 4e for the long haul.
I trust Paizo so I am excited to see what the Beta looks like.

While I am not going 4E (too old, too grumpy to change), there is no reason that you can't play both, or even all/any addtion of DnD.
Pick up the free Beta pdf rules (sometime today) and try it out.

I consider myself a grognard. I started playing with the Red Box and I still love that version of the game. I still play 1e/2e/BECMI all the time. I will occasionally play 4e. Perhaps. Heck, I still have a sandbox campaign that is, currently, using 4th edition. But I can't see playing for the long term. The game really isn't for me, I think.

Welcome back alleynbard...it's good to see you here again...
(And if it makes you feel any better...we all fell for 4e at some point or another. And personally, my will save against new RPGs is a -6.)
Thanks everyone!
I do really love this community.

No worries AllynBard. Welcome Home.
I also tried 4e, though I was skeptical from the start, it just didn't give me tingles the way that PFRPG does. It has little to do with edition or systems and a lot to do with my love of the work of Paizo's staff....their work is what got me interested in serious gaming again after a stuttering hiatus a year and a half ago...and they keep pulling me in.
Glad to know I am not the only one!

With quiet kindness, full respect, and heartfelt friendship.... welcome back. You were & are always accepted here. I share your excitement this day, Alleynbard!
As far as I am concerned you never left us first place (yeah I know it's hard to be a supporter of the fourth edition on these boards) so there's nothing to worry about.
But welcome to the PFRPG :)

After seeing how Paizo is doing at Gencon I must say its nice to see their excitement and dedication rewarded. This company knows how to treat customers and it paid off.
Makes me excited for them and the future of PFRPG. I only wish I could be at Gencon this year to share in all of this.
It is a very exciting time to be a gamer I think.
EDIT: Ohhh....the site just slowed down for me. Hopefully that means the site is being bombarded after that fantastic showing at the Ennies.

Fact is, so did I. But 3e/3.5 was never "broken." With a few house rules, the game can become a lot easier to manage and some "issues" can be addressed. Figure that'll be the case with Pathfinder. They made some improvements and left some areas alone that I thought needed revisions. What am I to do? House Rule. House Rule. House Rule.

Sounds like we're in the same boat. While the first RPG I ever played was 3.5, I've since added a lot of house rules, so the early previews of 4th edition sounded like just what I wanted, but once I got my hands on the books I just didn't feel it. I straight away started thinking about how I could try to fit my games around the rules, rather than the rules enhancing the gameplay and story. I ran a few games and it still didn't feel right. Then I checked out the Pathfinder RPG and was (and still am) so inspired and excited reading through all the awesome changes, and I just knew that it was what I had actually been looking for.
So... is there room for one more back here in the land of Pathfinder?

Can I start with step one, consider step five, and move on to step six?

It's easy to feel bad for the guy, sitting in his mom's basement, dressed like a nun.
Yeah, okay.
That won the award for the funniest thing I read tonight.
Of course, my reading material lately has consisted mostly of Elric of Melnibone so the laughs weren't exactly coming a mile a minute.

Yeh....guy's got a zillion gold pieces, he can summon hot babes if he wants, he's got like THE munchkin droolsword.
And all he does is b$!*% and moan.
WTF? Lighten up, Elric. Take a dimensional portal to Tahiti or something, guy. Or hang out with Fafhrd and Grey Mouser or something. Those guys know how to have a good time.

Rather than start a new thread I wanted to ask do I still need the core 3.5 books to use the PFRPG? Or is the core book stand alone?
As the beta rules still represent a play-test stage, a page-count limit was imposed if I undertsand correctly, and not everything could be got into the dead-tree (print) version; if you buy a dead-tree copy of the rules, you may need to check for the supporting web supplement which includes spells & magic items which did not make it into the dead-tree version of the beta. The free pdf download of the Beta is supposed to already incorporate this extra information, if I understand correctly.
In theory, the Beta rules should encompass all the basics information which you need to run the play-test version of the PFRPG, although as it is supposed to be backwards compatible, if you want to use additional information from the 3.5 core rule-books (such as the prestige classes from the DMG) that didn't make it into the Beta, then (in theory) the 3.5 material should work fine with the Beta.

Thanks Charles. I asked because I got rid of all my 3.5 books. I was made an offer I could not really refuse to part with them. It was the typpe of thing were the person interested in my 3.5 books asked me to name a monatary figure I named a figure he was willing to take the stuff off my hands. I did not think he was serious and refused twice. When he still wanted to buy my books a third time I agreed to the price.
This way I get to satisfy whatever version of D&D I like at the moment. If I'm in the mood for 4E I play 4E If I'm in the mood for 3E D&D I play Pathfinder. As long as I don't need the core 3.5 books for Pathfinder they have a sale. If not I'm not going to reinvest in the 3.5 core books. No matter how much I like Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder Beta is all you need to run a game rulewise. It doesn't have any monsters so that could be slightly problematical. Otherwise you should be good.

To steal one from Condi Rice: Any gamer can change their course at any time. The 3.5 community has no permanent enemies. ;)

Memorax, may I also suggest this!
All the Open content Monster Manual Monster are there as well as Open content variant rules from the Unearthed Arcana and Epic Level Rules.
Bookmark it and its a great resource.
If you're using Firefox, be sure to grab the little search extension, too. That's always handy at games.

Alley, you are alright in my book, I don't care what those 4th Edition guys say about you. You are alright. Truthfully though, by trying the game out (or even anything new for that matter) and coming to your own conclusions, you make our community that much stronger. I lean towards the fanatic side, so we need guys like you to justify our vile acts. You really make up for our over opinionated posts by knowing both sides of the issue.
Welcome back aboard,

Good but I prefer the sovelior_sage SRD. Handy downloadable version available on the main page to keep on your laptop for games in places w/o wifi (!gasp!) :)

Except there good times usualy end up with major property damage. The Grey Mouser could talk Elric to foot the bill though.
