Well my problem with the class isn't so much a balance issue, more of a prestige issue. As the class is designed, it just doesn't do anything for me. It gives lot's of spells yes but it doesn't offer something in the way of roleplaying concepts really. I would rather play an Arcane devotee that gives you less player wise but makes the character so much more interesting and ties the character closer to the game world.

A better question is how did you get those little swords by your name?
Easy, just go here, and join the Pathfinder Society.
On an related note. Join Cheliax, and the bleesings of the Nine Hells will with you.

It would appear to me that domain/school powers would not progress, just as in 3.5 turning/familiar powers did not increase. Mystic Theurges are focused on spellcasting, and the other abilities of the original classes are secondary.
For those who would like to proceed on the domain/school powers, perhaps a homebrew feat for each domain or school (or bloodline, if originally a sorcerer) would allow a MT to regain some of that power?

It will probably be better elaborated on in the Beta (released tomorrow), but as of Alpha 3, no, you do not gain new Domain or School powers from leveling in a prestige class like Mystic Theurge.
Whether your *caster level* for the powers you already have increases is subject to debate. Most say yes, but have little in the way of Rules As Written to back it up.

I think the original purpose of the update to the power list was because of the original power creep of prestige classes so that there was a good reason to stay a wizard or a fighter or a cleric throughout your career. So it would also be my guess that you don't receive further upgrades to those powers if you don't go up in those levels.

Hm. I would say that the powers to bnot progress, but those you have already gained increment with your casting level. These would also benefit from the Practiced Caster feat, without which the Mystic Theurge isn't much cop.
As for thematic content, the MyT has as much as you wish to give it with a huge humber of spells ... you can focus your character through those rather than through special abilities.

It really is confusing, especially since the domains and schools refer to caster level.
If the Air domain says that at caster level 20, you gain Elemental Swarm, it does sound like you really only need caster level 20, not class level 20.
And after all, as far as I know, the old domains and schools kept increasing with your effective wizard/cleric level as well, whether you gain that with the original class or PrCs...

Page 176, bottom left. The text provided would suggest that it works just as it did in 3.5, so Mystic Theurges would effectively lose their domains and school powers. Keep in mind, this would make the Pathfinder Mystic Theurge even worse, because in 3.5 they at least maintained the benefit of having a specialist school.
If it were up to me, your "caster" level for your specialist and domain powers would stack with wizard and cleric, but not for purposes of gaining new abilities. This way, you can at least keep using the ones you have, and it makes having 9 dead levels in Mystic Theurge somewhat bearable.

While the general ideal of the class always seemed more powerful then it actually was, there wouldn't be much of a need to continue to progress domain or school powers with any prestige class. That's one of the benefits you get for keeping with just your single class after all. Sure a few offer advancement for a druid animal companion or a wizard's familiar or a cleric's undead turning, but they weren't terribly common.

ive been giving this some serious thought, and realized something.
In 3.1 a wizards specialty school was tied directly to his/her spell casting ability. The same goes for a cleric's domains in 3.5. So with this in mind why wouldn't a clr3/wiz3/MST5 have the full domain/school powers of a 8th lv cleric or wizard?
