Kirth, re: Detect Magic cantrip:
http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/pathfinder/pathfinderR PG/communityContent/houseRules/gimpingTheDetectMagicCantrip&page=1#13
It's kinda harsh, and makes me a bit sad as a player, but I think that still keeps most of the utility of the spell while reducing it's ability to be game/story breaking.
Thoughts?
It also makes a new spell, Greater Detect Magic as a first level spell with most of the abilities and range of the current cantrip possible. I'd probably give it a longer duration than the cantrip since it's now first level, though.

Both your idea and Dilvish's have some merit. Your rule has the advantages of simplicity and being more nearly fool-proof, but we've already been using the spell at range -- so for the sake of continuity, I'm personally leaning towards something like Dilvish's interpretation: line-of-sight needed, with maybe the following special cases:
Arcane sight and greater arcane sight would become the paramount magic-detection-and-identification spells, so that people might actually take them.
Thoughts?

Auras of illusions are themselves masked by the illusion, but using detect magic on an illusion counts as "interaction," for illusions with save Will (interact).
Auras of magic traps can be seen and studied only if you make the Perception check (at the trap's DC) to notice them.
Spells affecting an area (e.g., alarm) can be detected normally; no nerf there. Arcane sight and greater arcane sight would become the paramount magic-detection-and-identification spells, so that people might actually take them.
Thoughts?
That's fine. I'm not that concerned about the continuity, which is part of the reason I suggested the nerf I did in that other thread. I prefer simple changes when they work!

Realistically, there probably won't be much difference in actual play between touch and line-of-sight use. But for the occasional cursed idol or whatever, a ranged detect magic gives you some warning of what you're about to get into if you're foolish enough to touch it...

as long as no one sticks it in their head...

Kirth, I don't know if you are subscribed to Kobold Quarterly, but there was a specialty priest article in the latest you might find interesting. They had a alternate rogue with cleric casting that might be a good base for your caster rogue. Next time I get down there I will bring it along if you like.
Dude, totally just realized what we need a caster rogue for. NINJAS. The heck with the ki pool and all, give them spell progression.

In the words of the pimp from Bachelor Party: "That would be out of sight, dude!"

Well, we are beneath the Mansion of Dame Luella. We have found a natural cavern that had an undead bat and some undead goblins. We have adjourned to a safe room that has Cadigan resting in it. We will go back to a stone door and see what is behind it. Oh, strangely enough I happened to find an Adamantine Glaive. Now it really means "Glaive to the Face!!!!!"

Cadogan's "spidey sense" is getting overwhelmed by psychic vibes from Llewella's house (kinda like Nicholson in "The Shining"). His visions have gotten mixed up with the psychic traces of her insanity, and as a result, sometimes he thinks he's her ex-fiance (whom she killed with negative energy), sometimes he's suicidal, and sometimes he's lucid. Currently they've got him in a room that blocks the haunting, so he's OK for now.
Still haven't located her body...

Y'all need to post synopses of the sessions here so I don't go nuts wondering.
It may be a bit before I can come back, after all...
All you need to know is that a giant undead bat was kicking our asses. I rolled a natural 20 (and then confirmed it) throwing a thunderstone at the bat, and the deafening effect screwed up its sonar. The rest of the fight, the bat took just as much damage from flying into a wall as it did from our attacks.
Because of me.
You're welcome.

While this is not certain by any means there are 3 that I am aware of. One is my group that plays at Asgard Games on Kirby on Sunday; I think there is one in Clear Lake, and another up north around Conroe. There has been mention of a group that is supposedly posted on Yahoo Groups named clag_Houston. Those are the only ones I am aware of.

You totally would never have thrown that stone if I hadn't tried to screech to mess up its sonar. Badly. Horrendously badly. But it was still my idea.
Oh, and I smashed that witch's window. It's only what she deserved, after all!
::kicks window shards again for good measure::

When ever we run low on Sprite can I request a refill of Dr Pepper? Please, as a change of pace.
Sure! I got the last thing of Sprite as a special request from TriOmegaZero. Dr Pepper it will be next time.
Oh, and don't forget Jess' favorite Japanese soda.
