Devargo

Curse of the Crimson Throne

I'm asking myself one question:
During my party, the PC didn't attack Devargo, because he was enough open minded to collaborate with the PC. Moreover, they did't meet what is under the throne so I wish to bring them back to eel's end and I want to know if Devargo is an important NPC for the next aventures in CoCT because, knowing my PC, they would be able to kill Devargo the next time they'll meet him, so is it important to keep him alive or not?

Spoiler:
There is a sidebar in "Edge of Anarchy" that answers the question: it is okay for Devargo Barvasi to die, either during the time they need to get the information on Amprei or after the PCs are a bit more powerful and better able to deal with him. He does not appear in any Curse of the Crimson Throne adventures after "EoA."

Thanks, I was not sure of that in fact. So my PC would be happy to meet another time Devargo!

So what happens if Devargo dies and Eel's End is cleared out?

Spoiler:
Things went sorta south in the negotiations, but the PCs took out Barvasi and will probably now go into the hold to deal with the spiders. Will someone fill the void?

Spoiler:
They should find letters in the hold (see C14) that implicate the ambassador was having an affair. If the PCs take those letters to Cressida, the ambassador will be found out.

Whatever happens to Devargo, it shouldn't be a problem, in fact, in the intro to Crown of Fangs:

Spoiler:
It's revealed that if the party hasn't killed or somehow displaced Devargo, he shuts up shop during the quarantine of Old Korvosa and gets killed by Chittersnap

I don't think there should be any problem as far as voids in the underworld go if the party do kill him as Devargo is relatively small-time. Someone else should be able to rise to the top as the favoured provider of the semi-legit "Hospitality" industry with relative ease; either the Cerulean Society or someone new...

Actually, they got the letters through a combination of diplomacy and knivesies wins, but the party wizard and monk couldn't stand seeing Majenko imprisoned, and the party bard didn't like his being a 'pimp' to the House of Clouds...so they took him down.

Sorry, I really misunderstood your question then. If you got the letters and killed all the bad guys, then all that the PCs need to do is go back to Cressida. The mission is accomplished and they move on. Did I miss something?

Nope. Illessa answered my question.

Spoiler:
In our game, a shapechanged rakshasa member of House Arkona has assumed Devargo's place to continue the vice trade.
After killing him with a massive earthbreaker critical hit when they were just intending to knock him out, they locked Devargo in the brig and threw away they key, then used the Harrow deck to project an illusion of Devargo ushering them out of Eel's End--chest of loot in tow. So, for the moment, only his "connections" who investigated when they didn't hear from the King of Spiders for a couple of days know he's dead. Will be a cool moment when his name comes up in conversation as being alive and kicking, and it'll be interesting to see what they do from there. It'll make "Escape from Old Korvosa" all the more awesome, that's for sure.

During my party, the first time they met Devargo, they make diplomacy in order to obtain letters whereas the rogue and bard saved Majenko (in fact the rogue unlocked the door but Majenko stayed in the cage until it found a better moment to flee. It found the PC during the shinggles run.

But my party found that Devargo sprayed drugs in North Point which one killed a friend of my party. So they came back to asked Devargo why he did a such thing, and he explained that it was just business and didn't care if people who bought drugs didn't know how to use it :-D Then he tried to attack the party but felt down (not killed) and is still in jail. Knowing that Arkona's family controls old Korvosa, I wrote a letter in which Lady Arkona asked Devargo to spread drugs in Korvosa, in order to destabilized the Queen.
For that moment, this letter is on the desk of Cressida who's asking herself if she'll give this letter to the Queen or Arckbanker of Abadar.
We're during the pledge and I know that :
Spoiler:

This letter will be reading by the Queen who'll decide to break all bridges with Old Korvosa. Moreover, Devargo will be tortures and killed according to Korvosa's law

You know, I'm glad to find out about Devargo's ultimate fate. The PCs managed to convince Devargo to let Majenko go free in return for favors, and a not tiny sum of money. Not tiny, but nowhere near the 5000 gp asking price.
I was going to post asking for some input on how to integrate the favors into the story, but looks like I really won't have to. And the party will, no doubt, go walking right into the dining hall. If you know what I mean. ;-)

If you want to incorporate favors given to Devargo, I'd do the following:

Spoiler:

  • During the plague in Seven Days, Devargo asks the PCs to smuggle in some medicine or other supplies to him once the bridge to Old Korvosa is cut down.
  • You can use him as a tool to get the Party to fight Pilts Swastel during Escape from Old Korvosa so Devargo eliminates a rival.
  • At the end, he asks the PCs to kill Chittersnap once he knows he has lost control of him.

None of these need be done, but they do help you integrate PCs into helping the action if needed. Use cases like this to make your job easier, not give you more work.

Can you tell me when during the pledge the bridge to Old Korvosa will be cut down? Because I make play this episod right now!
