Not '80s movie, per se, but '80s series - Shadow Warriors with Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba as Hattori Hanzo is totally rocking my world right now. Nevermind the cheesy music, it's got boobies AND ninjas in it (and even ninja boobies)! I feel an urge to draw lots of ninjas.

The Neighbors (1981). Staring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.
This movie reminds me of my subdivision.

Yea, that film rocked in some filthy cup way.

My wife and I are throwing out Goonies references left and right this week, but its probably because we are vacationing on Coastal Oregon. Stayed the night at Cannon Beach, where several scenes were filmed. Great movie.
Side note: the place we stayed at had a library of several hundred movies that guests could borrow for free. I asked the girl about The Goonies--it seems that they have about a dozen copies of that one because it is the most requested movie at the inn.

I grew up in this decade, so there are too many for me to name. Probably the best one I remember that anyone who was not preeteen in the early 80's has never heard of was Midnight Madness . Not a very good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but still a lot of fun. It features David Naughton (from the Dr Pepper ads in the late 70's early 80's) and Michael J Fox in his first role. The movie is one of those screwball comedies that were prevalent in the era, but with none sex and vulgarity that characterized just about every other comedy of the era, thus making it perfect for my age group.
The plot revolves around a game (don't remember what it is called) run by a nerd named Melio. He arranges for 5 competing teams each made up of a particular stereotype (i.e. the nerd team, the jock team, the man hating female team, etc) to race around the city to particular locations where they will have to complete a certain task or obtain a clue that, when deciphered, leads them to their next destination, et cetera until they reach the finish line It's a lot like the Amazing Race with larger teams and a smaller travel budget.
HBO ran this movie at least every day back in the early 80's, so me and my brother and sister pretty much had the dialogue memorized. It's been ages since I've seen it, so I put it on my Netflix queue. Now that I've read this thread, I have definitely got to check out Night of the Comet as well! Thanx for the recomendation!

Sorry. I just watched this tonight, and realized the Game Master's name is Leon, not Melio. Melio is Harold's annoying party member who has some of the funniest lines in the movie.

Torpedo wrote:I recently picked up a copy of Hawk the Slayer on DVD. I honestly thought that it was awesome and I can't believe that I missed that one back in my teenage years.I watched Hawk the Slayer over and over again nearly every time they played it in heavy rotation on the cable movie channels. For those unfamiliar, here are two minutes of AWESOME!
I almost grabbed up a copy of it about a week ago, the local Target actually has it!

Wow! My favorites from that time are quite lengthy... having also grown up watching large quantities of HBO probably didn't help much....

The Lost Boys was one of my favorite vampire movies. (I'm a complete sucker for vampire movies. I saw The Lost Boys in the theater six times... I also love movies with great soundtracks.)
Near Dark and Vamp are also fun '80s vampire movies.
Lots of great movies form this generation. I agree with a dozen or more excellent choices from the above list, from goofy stuff like Xanadu and Flash Gordon, directly above, to comedy classics like Airplane and Better Off Dead and The Secret of My Success, to action / horror / franchise stuff like the first Indiana Jones, Highlander, Predator, The Thing and Aliens movies.

Airplane, The Naked Gun, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands.
The golden ages of both the Zucker brothers and Tim Burton.
The 1980s were the beginning of a terrible new era in politics...but a fantastic time for pop-culture.
Let's not forget UHF!

And there are plenty more great movies beyond these ten.
Children of the Corn

Breakin'
Sixteen Candles
Firestarter
The Natural
Top Secret!
Bachelor Party
Conan the Destroyer
The Last Starfighter
The Muppets Take Manhattan
The Neverending Story
Revenge of the Nerds

Red Dawn
The Woman in Red
C.H.U.D.

It was a great year to be a kid at the movie theater.
