Well, that's one interested player.
'River Into Darkness' is looking like a great module for a play-by-post ... I'd say 'playTEST-by-post' but for the most part PRPG runs like D&D so there isn't all that much testing going on.
I'd want to have about 4 players for it. I prefer players who are able to post at least once a day.
Anyone else?

Okay, so we have five.
Let's get to work on characters then.
Let's try the point buy system on page 5 of the Alpha 3 with 20 points (high fantasy). I'm not going to use 'racial hit die' as we are starting at fourth level.
Take one extra skill (treated as a trained class skill) with one skill point per level in profession, craft, or knowledge. This represents your background and should add flavour to your character.
Discuss your characters, classes, and races in here. Ask me if you have any questions about what is allowed but I'm thinking stick to Alpha 3.

I was thinking of a halfling cleric. He'd be a follower of travel related deity. I have to look at the Golarion pantheon again to pick a suitable deity. I see him as optimistic, curious and eager explorer, at least initially. Biting insects might change his mind.
Desna! Do you have the write up of Desna?

Hmmmm . . . so far I'm considering maybe a sorcerer 2/monk 2 - something along the lines of Kwai Change Kaine from Kung Fu or even a young Li Mu Bi from Crouching Tiger, with the sorcerer part being to access limited spells of a buff or cinematic style. Mage armor, featherfall, etc.
The other thought is to level up an elf rogue I'm currently playing in another PbP. He's a spy type, two parts James Bond with one part Han Solo.
I'll think about what else I might want to do and post something more definite tomorrow.

Here is a MAP of Golarion so you can see where we are going. It may help with character creation. See the 'Mwangi Expanse'. That's the general area of this adventure. You can be far from home but part of your character's introduction will be explaining how you got there (or avoiding such questions). Ideally, you should not be from there.

Tarren I have a couple of questions:
How much money do we get to purchase equipment?
How do we calculate hit points?
Good questions. For the hit points, let's do this: maximum for starting level, half (rounding up) for 2nd and 3rd levels, and roll on invisible castle for fourth level. This gives us some randomness but will ensure we avoid a really flimsy character.
Don't forget to give the fourth level ability score increase (but if it is intelligence only after you have calculated skill points for earlier levels).
For treasure, take 2000 gp to equip your character and I will add some magic items worth about 3000 gp. These will be in the form of weapon or armour enhancements for some characters. Choices will be offered.

Backgrounds -- Just how did you end up at 'Bloodcove' anyhow? How messed up has your life been that you end up at this cutthroat little town at the edge of the untamed jungle? These are just some suggested backgrounds.
Unforgiven -- You are in exile for something you have done.
Hunted -- There's a price on your head. Run far. Run fast.
Haunted -- No matter how far you go, you can't forget what you've seen.
Rock Bottom -- Put down the bottle. I asked you a question. How did you get to 'Bloodcove' you ridiculous drunk?
Missionary Zeal -- The Gods guided you here for some reason or other.
Shipwrecked -- Everything was going so well before the storm came.
Pirates -- Everything was going so well before the black masted ships came.
You get the idea.

Yes I have the Desna article. She looks like the best option. I'm just not big on the favoured weapon. I'm more into the traditional weaponry. I'm going to take my first level as ranger, and then go cleric for the other 3 levels, as I want him to have some martial weaponry and wilderness survival skills.
His name is Fippin. He's basically a professional explorer and wanderer. His main reason for being in Bloodcove is because it is part of his religion to seek out exotic locals, and he wants to take on work as a guide/explorer. He's heard stories of lost riches to be found in the heart of the jungle, and a trip up river might give him the chance to score some riches and see some exotic sites.

Hey Tarren - I was checking out the FoeHammer Spires thread to get a feel for your style, and I have to say, Wow! 2500 posts since the end of March? That's seriously amazing.
Fantastic! This sounds more and more like my kinda game. I'll have to check out those threads :)

How's this:
Ixius has a level of Rogue then three of sorcerer of the Draconic bloodline. He is an expert archer.
Here is an outline of his background:
Ixius was born in Andora of an Andoran ex-ranger father and an Osirian mother. After his father married and had children he quit rangering and settled down to a simple life of farming, hunting and raising children in the countryside outside of Almas. From his father he learned to be an expert archer and the craft of bowmaking. From his mother he learned that he inherited her family's talent for draconic sorcery. When he was a teenager he left Andora for Absalom to attend one of its prestigious arcane univerities. He learned more sorcerous skills at school, but was caught trying to steal a magic longbow that one of his instructors was crafting. He was then expelled from the university and sent to prison.
After a couple of years of hard time Ixius was released with nothing but hard-earned rougish fighting skills and a bad temper. After living on the streets of Absalom for a couple of months he got a job as a bowmaker for the captain of an Absalom navy ship. He travelled on the navy ship around the inner sea for a couple of months, until the ship was lost in a battle against pirates from the Shackles. Ixius was captured and taken as a slave rower on one of the pirate ships. The ship was caught in a bad storm of the Eye of Abendego and was wrecked on the northern coast of the Shackles. Ixius escaped his pirate masters and eventually made his way to Bloodcove where he is currently seeking work, or even better, well-paying adventure.
Ixius has a rough demeanor but can also be very charming when he wants to. He has a bad temper and sometimes does not use his best judgement.

The backstory works.
"Ranged Masterwork composite longbow +5 (1d8/x3)" .... What's the pull on this composite longbow. The strength bonus should be added to damage.
Look at your skills again. Are you adding in the +3 for class skills?

Composite longbow +0 (Ixius has no strength modifier)

Nope. I missed that rule. I will adjust. Thanks Tarren

Ahhh ... So you're taking the composite for the extra 10' of range? 25 gp more isn't much. Just thought it was curious.

Let's see so far we have -
possible Ranger?
Ranger 1/Cleric 3
possible Druid
Rogue 1/Sorcerer 3decisions, decisions . . . could probably use another fighter, or a full on rogue . . .
gonna have to think about this
Pssst. The adventure is titled 'River into Darkness'. Someone who could swim might help. Hint, hint.

Point taken :)
I'm thinking my Ranger is going to be a little more grizzled than I first imagined. A half-orc as a matter of fact, even though I'm not familiar enough with the Golarion setting to get the races and regions matched right.
That said, I'm picturing:
Fel, a half-orc who was a young raider when he had his first view of the world beyond his warlord's whip. While others raided gold, he tucked away books and scrolls and taught himself to read. Eventually, he'd learned enough to desire life beyond the grip of his Claw. his particular warlords name for his raiding parties
On the last raid of the hot season, Fel betrayed his party...boldly making his way to the shoanti settlement with a warning and a plan that led to the total decimation of the orc raiding party.
Fel wasn't entirely welcome among the tribesmen, and spent most of his time in the wilderness, hunting and trading with the tribesmen. In the passage of time he was befriended by a widow, who'd tended his wounds on the night of the last raid. They did not fall in love, but needed each other and it wasn't long before twins were born of their union.
The children were more or less human, with his daughter having more of his orcish features, still they were accepted as the widow's young. Dreaming of better things for his young than his shoanti tribe can offer, Fel ranges far and wide risking everything to build an inheritance that surpases his half-orc ancestry.
-----------------------------------------------
Does this jibe? Working on the crunchy bits now.

That's why I expended skill points on a non-class skill to get Swim + 2! Besides, Ixius spent alot of time on boats so should know how to swim at least a little bit.

If, by some chance, there ends up being room in this PbP, might I participate?
I'm sure six players is probably full-up, but if there's a "waiting list" or something, I would be interested in being on it! :)
Consider yourself first on the waiting list. And, if the first group gets strung up their ankles and hung over a tank of Piranhas, consider yourself leader of the resue party.

Excellent! Then I shall remain in the wings, for now, watching the adventure unfold from a distance.

To make sure I understand your intent here. Were we supposed to take (in my case I roll D8's) 4 or the average 4.5 and round up to 5? Otherwise rounding would never happen, that's what confused me.
Do we start at minimum experience for 4th and what x.p. track are you planning on using?
and is Elvis....errrr, I mean.....Aroden really dead?
