Okay players, welcome to the Out of Character discussion thread for the game.
Let's start with character creation rules, so you can all get cracking on those character sheets.
1. First level PCs, generate ability scores using a 28 point buy.
2. Max hit points for first level. We'll use a fixed method of advancement for future level-ups.
3. AVERAGE (not maximum) gold by class to use for purchasing initial equipment. If you're not sure about the total, just ask and I'll let you know. Don't worry about clothing, it's assumed your character has some duds to wear.
4. Choose a trait from the CotCT player's guide, and please use it to tie the character's background to Gaedren Lamm. This is important, it's the inital hook by which the party will be formed.
5. Include a physical description and personality section in the character sheet. Also, please write up a background (it can be short) indicating why the character is in the city of Korvosa, and what the PC's relationship is to Gaedren Lamm.
6. Anything not from the core rules (online SRD) will need my approval.
Okay, that should be enough to get you going. If you have any questions, just feel free to ask.
Now, some guidelines for the game itself.
1. I'll handle all dice rolling. It just helps keep the game moving more quickly.
2. Please post in third person present tense. Example:
'Conan enters the inn,' would be correct. 'Conan entered the inn' or 'I enter the inn' would be incorrect.
3. For combat, just post what your character wants to do, and I will synthesize the actions into intiative order. If you can, offer conditional actions as well, in case your first stated action is invalidated or becomes too risky. (For example: 'Conan swings his broadsword at the nearest orc, unless he falls below 5 hit points. If that happens, he will instead take a 5' step to stand by the cleric.' That sort of thing.
4. Everybody play nice together, and let's have fun. It is assumed that the PCs are all of good or neutral alignment, and will not engage in sociopathic behaviors. Treasure and experience distribution will always be fair.

For Cry
My second question is I imagine my character as not wearing armor. Would it be possible to use the Defense Bonus found in the SRD? If not would it be possible to describe his armor as looking as normal clothing, especially if only cloth or leather? Again I just don't see him as the armor wearing kind

One of Perishial's byblows(though she doesn't know this), the product of his liasion with a younger daughter of one of the minor noble houses Andrea was brought up in a family who despised her ...she and her mother were treated more as servants than as family members and it was only when she could sneak away to read in the library that she found any peace. As she recieved no formal education other than her mother teaching her the basics she is entirely self taught in a variety of esoteric subjects(the plan is to give her low rankings in a lot of knowledge skills)including some books that she definitely should never have come in contact with. Her Mother also taught her dance and ettiquette being determined that their status should not lower their dignity
Her mother disappeared when she was 12 leaving her as the focus of the families disdain.As she matured into womanhood the unwanted attentions of various males both within and outside the family began to press heavily upon her and when one particularly objectionable member of the species pressed himself upon her shortly after her fifteenth birthday she shocked everyone, including herself by thwarting his lust with a show of magical energy seemingly from nowhere.
As the young man lay writhing in pain(he would never father children for his line) Andrea fled from the family house and disappeared into the stews of Old Korvasa where she spent anxious weeks avoiding assorted villians and the searches of her wrathful relatives.
She was reaching the end of her tether when an elderly varisian woman came across her grubbing for scraps in a back alley. For some reason unknown to Andrea the woman, Jessena, took pity on her and brought her into her home where for the first time in years she found herself being treated with kindness. Despite herself she found herself pouring her story out to the old woman who offered at the tales end to teach Andrea how to control the energies she feared so much. Despite some misgivings Andrea agreed and set out upon the path of the sorceress.She also learnt how to dance in the fiery manner of Varisian girls finding a release in the dance for all the emotion that she had built up inside her and incidentally making some coin to pay for her keep
That was two years ago...six weeks ago Jessena was murdered her meagre possessions stolen. Andrea found herself alone again and swore vengance on the murderers if she could find them.In the last few days she has linked the Murders to Gaedren Lamm and waits only for an opportunity to avenge her Mentor. She has spent a lot of time in Calistras shrine praying to the Dark Lady for aid in her mission

Andrea is 17 stands 5'4" tall and weighs a compact and pleasingly packaged 98 pounds. Her face is strong featured with high cheekbones and a distinctly elven cast.She has a winning though currently seldom seen smile and her emerald eyes tell of the pain in her past for those who care to look deep enough.Her voice is soft and melodious but shows some indication of the stress she has undergone recently.Her hair is Auburn,waist length and usually worn loose though she ties it back for domestic work
Andrea dresses in the classic Varisian style her love of bright colours showing through in the somewhat revealing dresses she wears.Conversely her manner (when not dancing) is quite demure and retiring..she covers up with shawls, blushes easily at comments about her looks and tends to defer to her elders.
At the moment we join the story her main purpose is to see Lamm dead beyond which she has'nt really thought much...she's smart enough to know that she need's help but doesn't know how to go about getting it..adventurers are not part of her social circle.

For a slightly more adult theme Andrea will have impusively offered her virginity to Calistra in return for vengeance

With regard to teaching Cala tricks, can I assume that before the game starts I have been training her and taking 10 on my handle animal checks? This would be sufficient to teach her all the tricks that I want to teach her.

Personally, I'm glad you've chosen to make Tanrob a Shoanti. It's nice to have PCs with some Varisian and Shoanti flavor in the game, because it adds diversity and also helps authenticate the feel of the city of Korvosa.
I have no problem with Tanrob's wolf starting play with her tricks already known. That's the kind of thing that's boring to handle in a Play by Post, anyway. :)

Yeah, sorry, my fault. I've included the increased fortitude save that goes with it, and implied it in the backstory, but I clean forgot to actually write it down! I'll add it immediately. Also, it occurs that I haven't added my languages IIRC so I'll do that now as well.
*sigh* I'm really bad at filling in character sheets.

rest assured it will be in the best possible taste and off camera..I will reference it in her journal when I get round to writing it
I also realised I forgot her languages,however the default elven language for half elves doesnt sit well with me..Andrea has no cultural contact with that side of her heritage and probably no opportunity to learn the language...so if it's ok by you I'd like to substitute Varisian as a default as it fits in better with the background as written..and its common enough not to be a game spoiler.
So her language list reads Common, Varisian,Celestial(which goes with her knowledge The Planes skill) and Draconic(like I said some of the books she read she should never have seen)

Background:
Chavali was born the second child of Camlo and Lymkala Toroda, a pureblooded varisian couple living in a small tightly-knit varisian community in the city of Korvosa. Camlo worked as a tailor and specialized in the colourful scarves that the varisian people are so fond of.
When Chavali was 12 her mother died in childbirth, leaving Camlo Toroda a broken man. The quality of his work also took a heavy blow and the family slowly descended into poverty. Three years later Camlo Toroda was knifed to death in a dark alley.
The three Toroda children, Chavali, her two years older sister Tauni and her 12 years younger brother Pais, were on their own. Chavali's older sister remained at home to care for their baby brother and tried to earn a few coins by sewing, but the main task of feeding the family was left to Chavali which she managed by performing dances, pickpocketing and con artistry (sometimes all three at the same time).
Recently her older sister was married to a promising young wheelwright named Catro, who also welcomed her brother Pais into his family.
Since now she had only to finance her own needs, Chavali had time to spare and began investigating her father's death. A few weeks ago she found a ring for sale at a local merchant that once belonged to her father. The merchant told her the name of the man from whom he purchased the ring: a man named Gaedran Lamm. Since then Chavali is obsessed with finding Gaedran Lamm and avenging her father.

Chavali is 18 years old, stands 5'7'' tall and weighs well-muscled 112 lbs. She possesses deep olive skin and long black hair that she usually wears loose and a fierce light in her dark eyes tells anybody looking at it, that she won't give up under any circumstances.
Personality:
Chavali possesses a passionate temper. She is swift to anger and holds grudges, especially if someone says something against her family.
Numerous harrow readings early in Chavali's life (while her mother still lived, who was skilled in the ancient art of harrowing) hit the mark precisely, leading Chavali to the firm belief that she is destined for a specific purpose in life and that this destiny will reveal itself through the Harrow.

Agreed this looks good now,are we friends or rivals. I suspect rivals as I'm prettier but you are the better dancer.:)But I think we should let that come out in game
Now all we need is a couple of meat shields...err fighting types to go up front and let us rear rankers and flankers do our jobs.

BACKGROUND
One day though while traveling in Merciless Way that changed
He found a young girl being harrassed by a group of thugs. He stepped in, not just because the girl was helpless but because he could use the entertainment. After a brawl that left two of them dead and the rest fleeing, he sat on an old barrel and began cleaning his old, dull blade.
"You should go home" he glanced at the girl. She just stood looking at him. "Aren't you afraid", he asked solemnly. "You may wind up like your friends"
"No. You're not a bad man like them" she replied. "If you were I wouldn't be standing here" she smiled at him, dark brown eyes gazing through her wild hair.
"What's your name", she asked. "I don't have one", he looked up from cleaning his blade. "Silly everyone has a name. My names Sara", She replied. "Like I said I don't have one", I don't see the need.
"Well make one up. I can't thank you if you don't have a name." A smile bigger than the first on her face. "Hmm, fine than", the man said with a slight sigh. He reached down for a stick and began writing in the mud.
"There" he laid the stick down. "A..cero? That's wierd.", she looked puzzeled at the ground. "Well thank you. If you come back tomorrow I'll have something for you", with that she left.
From that day on they meet every afternoon in the same place. They didn't talk much. The just sat back and watched as ships and people went by. Sara always brought sandwiches for them both. After a few months though she stopped coming.
Acero just thought the girl was tired of coming. Why would anyone want to be around someone like him. It was later that he found that she killed. After "asking" around though one name kept coming up...Gaedren Lamm. For one reason or another this man killed his friend and he was going to find out why.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION & PERSONALITY
He literally lives for battle, and tries to get as much enjoyment from it as possible. Even to the point of weaking himself to make it last longer. He's admited to several people that he has no sanity or common sense, but is actually very perceptive and notices traits in people that others wouldn't. He also strongly believes that fun comes before working
Though he loves to fight, Acero isn't the type of person to slay a downed foe. If someone manages to live after the encounter(0 to -9), he wont' take the oppurtunity to finish it. To him these people are already defeated. They should be happy they were lucky enough to live. There are two main reasons he does this though. One, he's already beaten them and to continue on would be boring. And two, because maybe they'll return one day. Stronger and hoping to face him again.
Acero doesn't care for who rely on magic or other methods to win a fight. They're cowards who hide behind words and books. A real warrior uses his hands or his blade.
*You would think, this being my fourth or fifth pbp character, writing backgrounds would be getting easy. But it's not. I hope this okay.

Okay all, mittean has confirmed his place in the game on the other thread, but he seems to be having some internet connectivity problems. Hopefully, those will be resolved soon. We'll have to see if he still wants to play a knight. If so, I think that makes for a nicely balanced party, with some excellent role-playing possibilities. Also, some cool hooks to draw the PCs in to the setting, and make things feel more authentic. I'm liking what I see from the characters so far. I still haven't had the chance to crunch any numbers, but I'll get that going very soon.

Unfortunately, I don't think it makes sense for me to have any connection with any other PC's in the city. I only arrives about two months ago, and the only people I've had regular contact with are the renegade druids and Gaedren. Even after 2 months, poor Tanrob feels so alone in the city *cry*

That's totally fine, metagaia. The whole traits system is designed for the PCs all to have a shared nemesis (Lamm) to draw them all together. So, there's no reason any of the PCs need to know each other before-hand.

I'd like Andrea to do some checking up on Lamm ...using her gather information and taking 10(and even taking 20 if possible)whenever she can manage to.
She will be circumpect..no point in giving away her interest too much
but basically she wants to know
1) Lamms base of operations
2)known associates
3)connections with any outside organisations..slave rings, dodgy traders..that sort of thing

Ambriel is a serious young woman, who has seen much, and has lil in the way of humor, although some people seem to find her humorous. She is the neice of Lictor Severs "Boneclaw" DiVri, the commander of Citadel Vraid. She was framed for the murder of an Acadamae student four months ago by Gaedren Lamm, and although she was acquited, she was forced to leave the Hell Knights in great dishonor. She lives in a cheap apartment iin East shore, that she got through a minor military noble family, the Koth's, who were family friends.
The trait provides a +2 to Spellcraft, but I figure that doesn't work for her. Give her what you deam appropriate.

mittean, I like Ambriel's concept too. A disgraced former Hellknight could make for some really great role-playing.
As for her trait, you can choose a skill other than Spellcraft and give her a +2 bonus to that instead. Just pick one appropriate to her history.

Ok so Andrea lives in a tenement flat(rent 1-1.5 gp a month)in Bridgefront near the paintworks
Bridgefront: When the people of Bridgefront ran out of
room to erect more buildings, they started adding makeshift
floors to extant structures. Over time, these makeshift floors
gained their own rooftop lean-tos. Spaces between buildings
became fair game as well, with ladders and long poles crossing
gaps over increasingly narrow roads. Bridgefront occupies a
narrow spit of land at the base of Garrison Hill, reaching only
three blocks inland from the strait. In those three blocks,
though, live more than a tenth of the city’s population,
including almost eight-tenths of its poor and destitute.
O13. Hessim, Newby, and Sage Paint Manufactory:
This curious place is a twisted and sagging shopfront that
displays hundreds of tiny jars and pots, brushes, canvases,
and easels. Even from the street, the building smells of
turpentine, linseed, and oil.
For the past 108 years, the manufactory of Hessim, Newby,
and Sage has made the rich pigments of Old Korvosa into
paint, a fact the trio of smiling, ingratiating elderly owners
is proud of. The three men are incredibly short and wear
thick optics to see. Although soft-spoken, the old men are
both nervy and strangely defiant. From the simplest flake
white at 1 sp a pot to the most dazzling Newby Violet at
40 gp a jar, the pigments of Hessim, Newby, and Sage are
unsurpassed for brilliance, realism, and permanence.

Studio: The smallest of all dwellings, a studio consists
of a single open space, often with just enough room for
a bed and one or two other pieces of small furniture.

I'm minded to multiclass Andrea as a (not altogether willing) favoured soul of Callistra and then going down the path of Mystic theurge...if you approve that is if not I can do it as a cleric but I think it would lose something doing that

I'd like Andrea to do some checking up on Lamm ...using her gather information and taking 10(and even taking 20 if possible)whenever she can manage to.
She will be circumpect..no point in giving away her interest too much
but basically she wants to know1) Lamms base of operations
2)known associates
3)connections with any outside organisations..slave rings, dodgy traders..that sort of thing

Sadly, Andrea's street connections fail to reveal much of any use. Most people on the streets know of Gaedren Lamm, but no one seems to have a solid handle on a base of operations or any known connections or associates. The general feeling is that the man is the worst kind of scum, but he seems to have a knack for staying one step ahead of his enemies...this is why the Korvosan Guard haven't nabbed him yet.

Wellard, the Favored Soul class would be permissible as a future multi-classing option for Andrea. You should know, however, that I'm pretty strict about Prestige Classes. I demand solid role-playing and characterization before I'll allow one to be taken. Having said that, it's not something to worry overly much about right now, because we're talking about a long time down the road, for a PbP.

Huzzah, at last some time to work out some character sheets. (This turned out to be a busy week, not least in part due to the holiday).
Anyway, Wellard: Andrea is up first, and she looks great. No major problems here at all. I would like to see a spot on the sheet for how much money she is carrying. By my math, that would be 36 gp and 6 sp, after starting with 75 gp. Remember, house rule: I don't care about the price or weight of clothing. So, by that thinking, I've got her carrying about 10.5 pounds of stuff. Well under the light load limit.
Aside from those minor issues, all looks well. She is ready to start.

metagaia, Tanrob is up next. Again, very good job! I have one question, however. I think he should be able to memorize 3x 0-level spells and 2x 1-level spells per day. On your sheet, he's got 2x zero, and 3x 1st, which is backwards, I think. If you could, please have a look at that. Everything else looks great.
Note, however, I haven't really looked over Cala yet, only Tanrob.

I'm trying to go over Acero right now. Overall, pretty good job. However, I do need you to clarify his skill points break down. He has 16 points to spend on ranks. Also, please recall that Sense Motive is not a class skill for Barbarians. Some more detail there would be great, as I can not get the numbers to work out.
Also, I calculated that Acero would still have 40 gp after buying his sword and armor. Do you want him to have any other possessions besides his combat gear?
Edit: Also, I disagree with his Listen and Spot being +4 under Senses, unless that is part of the Skill point mystery.
