It's not which edition, it's who you play with...

4th Edition

I'm so with you on that, and lucky enough to have had some great people sitting at the table.

Agreed. No matter what you play, play it!

The Exchange

So very very true.

I second that emotion.

Amen, brother!

Great! Who's up for a game of Champions?

ME! Oh! Oh! Pick me! I've even got a superhero campaign I've published in Digital Hero we can...

Oh, wait.

Um...

And it still pisses me off that that didn't actually make it into a ebook.

I understand economic realities. I'm just saying.

I agree wholeheartedly with the OP. It could not have been said simpler or better.

I don't know...ever since I played my first session of 4e I've found a better job, I feel healthier, my relationship with my parents has improved, and I'm having more sex.

I think I'll stick with 4e unless Pathfinder can promise $500,000 annual and 500 virgins in paradise.

Spoiler:
And yes, I agree, it has more to do with you gaming group than which system you play.

Here, here.

My 8-year-old son and I went to D&D Game Day.

He was given a very shiny silvery-white d20 with which he rolled some massive criticals. On the way home he reminded me of why I play the game -- the cool dice! ;-) He held it in his hand all the way home and said "This is my number one d20 Forever!".

I asked him what he thought of 4e and whether he preferred 4e or 3.5 or PRPG. His answer: "Whichever one you are playing dad. The rules aren't as important as having fun together."

Dumb kids. They is too smart.

I just want to send out a huge "Thank You Very Much" for this post. I have been quite the curmudgeon of late given the 4e arguments, but this simple clarification has brightened my day. It IS the people we play with that make it worth it all, and I needed that reminder today.

That doesn't mean I'll be shelling out money for 4e, but it does mean I'll remember that it's up to us (especially old) gamers to be sure new generations understand the same joy we got out of the game when we were kids and that many of us still get out of the game today.

Thank You Thank You

....and it's probably best not to tell him yet that all dice eventually lose their mojo and betray you at the most inopportune moments.

An 'old gamer' at D&D Game Day showed my son a set of dice without the numbers coloured in and a crayon and showed him how we did it in the 'old days'. Where do you find dice like that these days?

Out of the mouths of babes.

He is wise.

That's...yeah. Well put. :)

Scarab Sages

I play with myself.

Yep. That's them. The 'Green Glow 7 Raw Polyhedral Die Set' were the ones.

Me too! That explains why my games suck so much.

I could go on and on as to why but I'll leave it at that. Forget which edition is better, just go find the right group for you and get over it.

Discuss.

True dat. Though I do have to say, the best players are those who remember the G in RPGs. Have fun, people.

But no matter how many times he feels like chucking that d20, he will always come crawling back to it.

Am I crazy to think my d20's have different personalities?

But to the OP comments: RIGHT ON! Get together and game!

The DDI on the other hand...that thing is our Nuclear Age.

Scarab Sages

This is so very true. My current group got together thanks to Game Day 2005. Since that time, we have all become good friends. We even brew beer together.

Mmmmm....beer.

Very True. Three of my players have been in my group since the basic set. We get together every Friday and have a great time.
