So who has the Core Books today?

4th Edition

Dark Archive

Chime up if you purchased or received your books today. I still got a few more hours to go before my FLGS opens its doors :D

Picking mine up in about 3 hours.

I'll be getting mine this afternoon.

Got 'em!

Me too!

Guardtower was open at Midnight. No, I wasn't there.

I got mine last Wednesday.

They should be arriving pretty soon today.
Then we'll get to see if all the fuss is merited or not.

Going somewhere at midnight to pick up books, I'd expect to be merrily entertained.

Like having the books in a cave guarded by goblins or something.

I got mine yesterday. Went to the FLGS intending to wheedle my way into a day early release, but there it all was, out on the shelves. I preordered and prepaid my set 16th of April, so mine was sitting nicely behind the counter.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago (because of work).

Liberty's Edge

I ordered mine through the mail, so not yet. Interestingly, the gift set was on sale in the Yongsan PX today, which is June 6th here in Korea, but the 5th in the US. I have to say, the packaging is very nice.

Ding! Delivery dude just arrived. Ooh, shiny.

Can I even answer that without getting flamed? Doesn't seem like it in this forum.

Postal carrier brought mine about 45 minutes ago. Nice production value.

Seems like Amazon has the Gift Set listed as in stock July 2, while my ship date is listed June 10th, and the release date was listed June 6th...

No matter. Saving nearly $50 is worth a months wait.

I got mine yesterday on the way home from work.

Sure. Tell us, based on both your read and, preferably, playtesting 4E edition why you think it's (un)cool. Just no personal attacks on posters, WotC, without backup (e.g., you're all WotC whores for buying into this 4E ghetto trash, etc.); no broad negative statements without backup (e.g., 4E is stupid, etc.); and, as much as possible, please don't compare it to 3.x. or older editions of the game (e.g., 4E sucks because it doesn't have gnomes PC/druid/Save or Die spells, etc. like 3.x, which is the REAL DnD.) Most, if not all of us, have played these editions and are keenly aware of its advantages/disadvantages, and we'd prefer 4E be judged on its own merits.

Personal request. If you compare 4E to MMOs and CCGs, please explain the similarities in-depth. I only just learned the latter and have yet to play any MMO. Same with D&D 2nd Edition.

Just a note on this for future reference for you and other folks.

I had pre-ordered with Amazon a long time back. Almost as soon as it showed up. Delivery date was for June 10th.

Comes around late May and I realize that my "Prime" shipping defaults to two day, and I'd like to get it before the weekend so I go and change it to "1 day". Boom! New delivery date of July 23rd.

Now, I work on database systems so can guess what happened. By changing the delivery type it canceled the original order and generated a new one. That new order of course defaulted to the 2nd printing batch that's not available until later. So by changing shipping I pushed the order out.

Of course, when I heard the whole "buy.com" situation earlier I put in a pre-order there as well just to see if the warehouse would ship a few more out. They didn't, but buy.com did get it to my door early this morning.

I'm still debating if I'll cancel the amazon order or if I'll get another set to give to my son. Guess we'll see how he likes it once he sees mine a bit. He's more of a Savage Worlds guy and always thought DnD too "rules heavy". (Oh the youth of today!) We'll see if this new one is more his speed.

I'll refrain from going turning this into a "review" thread, so I'll just give my brief opinion on the matter. This is after reading and digesting the books for two weeks, playing several sessions of the game as a DM AND a player (two of those sessions included Keep on the Shadowfell).

On a scale of 1-10 I'd give 4th Edition a score of 9.0 - which is not an average of the scores below but a total score overall - it's very impressive, despite some flaws and a few issues I have with the system overall.

Packaging - 9.9 : I absolutely adore the new design of Dungeons and Dragons. I love the BOLD emphasis on those two words on the books and I love to simple and elegant color scheme they've chosen. The layout is outstanding, from the index to the glossary. Each book is intuitive, and things are easy to find. The art is absolutely fantastic. Other than a few reused pieces from 3rd Edition I noticed in the MM, all the new art looks incredible and really gives me a feel for the new world of D&D.

For Players - 8.5 : The new design of the Player's Handbook is great. Everything a player needs (aside from mounts) is in the book. Races, Classes, Powers, Feats, Equipment, Combat Rules, Magic Items, etc... Each player will only need this one book (and the occasional flip through of the Monster Manual to notate mount abilities). The rules are sleek and simple. The races are all well-balanced and each has its own merit and seems fun to play. I was the first to cringe when I heard about Dragonborn, now they might be one of my favorite races. The classes all seem fun and interesting to play. I don't want to get too in depth about rules, but let's say I love the new system and despite a few minor flaws, it is really intuitive and geared toward highly cinematic adventure. The system is a vast departure from 3rd Edition and I can definitely see how games like WoW have impacted 4th Edition. I was worried about this until I actually played it and saw the game in motion. If there is one major complaint I feel the PHB lacked a good variety of feats for the characters at Heroic tier of play. This will of course be remedied with time and new books, but I found the array of feats from the get-go underwhelming.

For DMs - 9.5 : This is by far the BEST edition of Dungeons and Dragons to DM in. Everything is very fluid and streamlined and I've never had more fun playing monsters in combat. I love having a variety of each type of monster - something I always wished for in 3rd Edition - and I love having "roles" for the monsters to provide an array of enemies to fight. Preparation seems to be reduced due to the ease of creating encounters, treasure, and figuring out XP totals and such. I haven't prepped many games so far, but I can already tell the more comfortable I get - it'll get even faster. I love it. They've definitely written the DMG for the newbie DM in mind and this makes the DMG a lot less crucial for an experienced DM to have. But, there is tons of solid advice and tactics presented in the DMG that makes it a worthwhile purchase. The Monster Manual is sleek and easy to reference as well. The additional playable races in the back - like warforged, gnomes, shifters, and dopplegangers - allow me to play in my favorite setting Eberron without too much of a hiccup until the campaign setting book comes out next year.

Overall - 9.0 : This ain't your momma's D&D. It's different. A lot different. Characters are more powerful, have more options, and generally aren't the weaklings they were in lower levels of older editions of D&D. This is a good thing in my opinion - as I love being able to throw the party into the fray of wild combat from the get-go. There is no holding the player's hands until they reach 3rd level or higher. Characters can survive easier due to things like healing surges and whatnot, but it requires tactics, strategy and teamwork from everyone at the table. DMs are going to be able to spend more time developing the plot instead of statting up monsters and NPCs. I like this as my campaigns are generally plot heavy. Monsters are FUN to play. I love pitting my players against the new monsters and seeing how they come up with a strategy to defeat them. Roleplaying is still at the heart of D&D despite what some people might be assuming. I've found more advice for DMing and playing in a heavy roleplaying campaign than in any other edition. It's obvious this is a roleplaying game. With all this said, I'm still not 100% sold on the system. I didn't give it a 10.0 because I can see there are still some issues that need to be resolved. Missing feats, limited powers, high level play (haven't gotten there yet) and the lack of some races/classes that need to be in D&D.

Even though I am not a fan of the new system and the new flavor, I absolutely, positively must agree on this aspect. Understanding that this version of the DMGuide isn't directed at or written for the established DM, but rather someone picking up the role for the first time, the DMGuide does give some solid advice and building tools.

Damn, Amazon.com is down. Must be the nerd spam. They said they were shipping mine today. If they don't i might cry.

I placed a two day shipping order from amazon after buy.com cancelled my order because "the PHB was no longer available". It left Wilmington Ohio about an hour ago. Says I should get it the nineth.

Just got them. Man, it's heavy.

Liberty's Edge

My playtester PHB arrived Wednesday, and I have been giving it a thorough reading since then.

That's odd. I placed my order yesterday and it's scheduled to arrive monday. Must be location because mine came out of Lexington, KY.

I got my playtester copy on Wednesday as well. I've read a fair chunk of it already.

Picked up my preorder from my FLGS. So far looks quite interesting.

True story: As my girl is picking out a Webkinz (this is a gaming store determined to be profitable), another guy meanders over to the counter-guy, says "Hi, Jerry. Anything new today?". Jerry looks at him a moment, replies carefully "Well, the 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons set is out now." Guy says "Oh, well that's fortuitous. I'll take that."

I'll still can't decide if the guy was kidding around.

Never quite agreed with that. I will state that the way I think D&D is more like MMOs is because of its structured approach to character development. Your choices, to me, seem smaller (and this isn't a bad thing) and tend to assist you to min/max your character build simply by the nature of the game. In other words, in 3.5 you can meander all over the place, to the point of becoming lost. In 4E, you have different directions to go, but your path is defined, with less meandering, and less opportunity to get lost. This limiting funtion is a design goal for D&D (all options are optimal) whereas its a limitation in an MMO (we can only code so much).

I *DO* feel that 4E's current format would most likely be the kick-ass-ingest rule set to do a WoW PnP RPG. I have both Warcraft and WoW RPGs and they never carried over the feel of either the strategy game or the MMO. Don't know if that would be damning evidence, however.

Liberty's Edge

I got'em. So far I have just skimmed through them. Will spend more time this weekend on them.

Got mine. Barely skimmed the PH before running a demo. Thankfully it is a very easy game to run (and my experience as a DM).

Scarab Sages

Mine was scheduled for shipment on Friday, June 6th, of 2008. What's my point? It is now Saturday, the 7th, and i just received word via email, from Amazon, that my order has a new shipment date... 2-3 weeks. That's the end of the month! I'd love to cancel for i feel they let me down, but i did save 50 bucks. Very inconvenient for me and my fellow players, but whadya do?

Thoth-Amon

I got mine a few days ago as I'm a partner in a small bookstore and we opened an account with the local games distributer.

I was on the phone with the distributor last week trying to come up with some plausible excuse as to why he had to ship us this prior to the release date (we got it a few days before the release date but not much - He'd probably heard every plausible reason to ship early by the time I got to him and was not buying my lame reasoning involving lemmings and the statistical probability of encountering an Archfiend while riding a bike down an alleyway).

So I toss one set to my partner saying "maybe we should take the phones off the hook and put up a 'gone fishing sign on the door!'.

More rational then me he insisted we keep the store open...but neither of us otherwise got much work done for the rest of the day.

I walked into my local gaming store and purchased them on Friday. So far, I'm very pleased. We finally got to run a few combats today. The fighter was unlucky and almost went down before first round of our first official 4E combat. Then my wizard character (Dr. Zanderhal Vorstien, professor of archeology) nearly bit the dust later on in that same encounter...

Yep. I bought the PHB and MM the minute I walked in the door for Worldwide D&D Game Day. Still waiting to take a look at the DMG to see if it's worth getting.
