West Michigan PRPG Playtest

Alpha Release 2 General Discussion

Dark Archive

I've been gaming for the majority of my 31 years. After exploring innumerable ancient ruins, braving haunted wilds, clashing with powerfully evil villains, and all of the other familiar-but-fantastic stuff that comes with being a role-player, participating in the PRPG Playtest is as exciting as anything I have done before.

The game room in my basement will be HQ for what we hope will be many enjoyable months of putting the PRPG ruleset through the paces. We plan to meet three or four times each month for 4-5 hours at a time, allowing for socializing, munchies, and breaks.

*Starting with 1st level Alpha 2 characters and "Hollow's Last Hope" likely leading into "Crown of the Kobold King"

*32 point buy, with only 3 players at the moment

*Flat hit points, as described on p.10 of Alpha 2

*Maximum starting gold by class

We will be primarily playtesting three things in these and later mid- and high-level sessions:

1) The ease of adapting existing 3.5 adventures "on the fly"--which is what I and, I think, many others will do regularly in the future;

2) Backwards compatibility with existing 3.5 products, since we have a huge library of books and materials between us;

3) Most of all, which of the new rules are fun and we'd like to see carried over to the final PRPG and which are for one reason or another troublesome.

As has been done already in the sidebars of the Alpha documents, please let us know if there are other specific things you'd like us to try. Thanks for the chance to be part of shaping the game we'll be playing for years to come!

Grand Lodge

*sigh* I wish I was able to commit ... :-/

Hope it all goes well.

Unfortunately... we're quite a distance from you, in Jenison.

Nah, I'm in the D; about 2.5 hours. Nice to see more Michigan people. ;)

Good luck with the playtest!

Sovereign Court

I'm creating a human Paladin for this playtest. She's based off a 3.5 bard/paladin I'm playing in another game.

I love the gnome flavor, and tried as hard as I could to get a gnome to work with the paladin/bard thing, but the strength penalty hurt more than the constitution helped. Ah well, human works.

We did introduce a house rule with regard to the human martial proficiency. Both of us that created character builds this week were humans with full martial weapon proficiency, so we aske dif there might be something we could gain instead.

Exotic weapon proficiency seemed too much - all of sudden I saw a lot of spiked chain fighters or something. It was decided a single weapon focus would be a nice bonus that wasn't too over the top, so both of us took that.

We have a generous 32 point buy rule, since there's currently only three of us for the adventure. As of now, two of us are planning on multiclassing, so we'll be able to see how rules changes with skills and hit point bonuses, etc. might affect multiclassing.

I'm building a human fighter. For my weapon choice I decided to go with the earth breaker out of both the Rise of the Runelords and the Curse of the Crimson throne Player's Guides. If you're not familiar with it, the earth breaker is a martial weapon, a two-handed hammer, with the damage of a greatsword and the threat range/critical modifier of a greataxe.

Featwise, I decided to grab Toughness for that extra buffer vs. death. For my other two feats, I decided to go the traditional Power Attack and Cleave route. Also, as Jess previously pointed out, we decided to try tacking on the Weapon Focus feat (for a martial weapon only) in place of a bonus martial weapon proficiency for classes that already have all martial weapon proficiencies. Thinking back on this now, it really is no different than, say, the elf's racial weapon proficiencies, though maybe the same could be granted for that. This may be a bit much in the end, though a good option if you plan on running a game low on magic items.

Jenison? I am in Grandville. It's almost as though this is some sort of divinely-ordained occurrence.

I'm in Grandville at this very moment; I teach in the district. Would you want to meet sometime later this month and see if we can connect for this playtest? I'll have family visiting for awhile, but sometime after the 16th would be good.

What days are you guys (tentatively) planning on meeting? I'm still hammering out the details of my work schedule, so I'd have to work around that.

We're currently meeting on Thursdays, with a relaxed social time starting at 5 and getting down to gaming from 6 or so to no later than 10. Let us know if you want to work from there!

That sounds workable. I'm trying to get Thursdays off, actually, so that might work out well. Have you already begun the module?

Two of the three current players met last week to map out the nuts-and-bolts of their characters as described above, and a third is doing so with me through email.

Our next meeting is on May 15th, but again have guests at our house starting tomorrow through that morning. I'd prefer if we were to meet up before you dive in. Hope you understand; we've had mixed experiences with jump-ins before, with some of them being very personable folk with whom we still game and do other things today, and others... not so much! If you and I and maybe some of the players--pending availability--could connect between the 15th and the 22nd, you could join us as early as that latter Thursday. We won't actually be starting the module until early June, as the end of May is packed-full for a couple of us.

Thanks again for your interest!

Alrighty. Tuesdays and Thursdays work well for me, and I can probably meet any time after 7:00 on other days. Just name a time and date.

I've heard from one of the three other players on his availability, but will give the others a couple days to chime in. Let's continue planning through email; you can reach me at my Yahoo! address: kranderson57. Hoping again that this works out!

Michigan!

Moving back home to Midland in June!

So looking forward to getting rolling with this game! It's been an age since I got to game for the fun of it (and I think I'll be able to bring some experience to playtesting too).

I'll be setting up a half-orc cleric of Nethys (Knowledge/Magic domains) who'll be multiclassing as a sorcerer as well upon 2nd level. Given my obsessive nature of details and world-building, I'll be building up a lot of info on how I see the church/religion of Nethys as we go--just preparing the DM for the onslaught....

No way! Both families of ours live in St. Charles. Small world.
