Dwarves-Slow but steady

Races & Classes

So according to Slow but Steady a dwarves movement rate is NEVER affected by armor or encumbrance? Gee does anyone else see the WoW dwarf with tons and tons of magical items, goodies and gold and still moving at 20 a round? That is ludicrous. I hope that ability is changed by the final version.

Um....hows is that any different than from the 3.5 dwarf?

I see now that yes it is the exact same ability. I still say it's stupid. I had never played dwarves in 3.5 so I didn't know the ability extended to loading yourself down like a WoW twink and still being able to move. The penalties to skills and attack rolls would suck but if all you need to do is be a pack mule for magical items and treasure it still seems a very silly and overpowering ability. Oh well, didn't know it was there from 3.5 already. Guess I'm complaining to the wrong people. My bad.

Actually, the wording is different. It used to say:

* However, dwarves can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures, whose speed is reduced in such situations).

Now it says:
* Dwarves have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.

I don't know why they changed the original, precise wording to something more loose. Now they've left the door open for rules lawyers to claim that dwarves can move normally even when carrying double the maximum load, whereas they would be forced to move 5' per round under the old rules.

I don't see WoW at all. Dwarves are short and stout and have no problem with heavy armor/loads. Common sense is still there. If your DM lets you load 10 wagons worth of crap on a dwarf that's their mistake.

I DO see WoW considering the empahsis on magical items in D&D. A dwarf could easily carry tons and tons of items and still move 20. Give him some STR enhancing items and it gets ever more silly.

Any medium size fighter in full plate is at this exact same situation as long as he is not dragging the items, which doesn't reduce speed at all it specifically states you move 5. It's a dwarves special trait that his body shape makes him move around like he was encumbered no matter what, so even if he was encumbered it would not matter. I do not see how this does not make sense.

Uh no he does not move around like he's encumberd. He moves at 20 which is the movement rate of shorter races. It's silly that he can still move at a total of 20 and carry a heavy load because then it brings to image the MMORPG player with tons and tons of loot. It's already BS that most DMs totally forget to figure in weight when PCs start grabbing loot and gold. No way can you just walk off with a Dragons Horde. The problem is the new reading now says he can carry even more than a heavy load and still move at 20. Just put a big ole S on the Dwarf or Make him Green and angry and able to hurl mountains or some bs and be done with it.

Hogarth is the only person with any sense. A rules lawyer can now indeed have his munchkin dwarf carry twice a heavy load and still move at 20.
