Rogues

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

Does anyone think that the rogue should have the option of not being "the trapfinder"? They should have more options available to them. Something social or combat related. I think they should get a choice of their archetype. Maybe they get a few choices: dungeoncrawler, fast talker, thug (just as a few). The dungeoncrawler gets the trapfinding, the fast talker gets special abilities with social skills and the thug gets bonuses during combat.
I've always wanted this and when the PHB2 came out and I heard about the new class features I was excited. Then when I saw the options, I was disappointed. I think Paizo has the opportunity to help make the Rogue more versatile. I know they are very versatile, but I would like more options to run different archetypes.

This sounds good to me. Further, Trapfinding should be a feat or capability of Perception and Disable Device and therefore available to any one.

I have another idea, giving Rogues bonus feats rather than Trapfinding and Sneak Attack and then making Sneak Attack a bonus feat like this. However that might not be a good idea for a number of reasons.

Absolutly! While some might also fit for the Bard I think of:
Expert, Agent/Spy, Swashbuckler, Treasure Hunter, Gangster/Crime Lord, Assassine, Chameleon/Trickster

I really liked their take on the "Track" feat. Perhaps something like:
If you are trained in Disable Device, you can use Perception to detect traps.

Absolutely! I'd also like to see some flexibility of this nature in other classes. Clerics who give up their domain abilities to become Templars (Paladins), for example. And who says the wizard has to be some doddering old fool experimenting in his tower? The artificer and sorcerer classes were initially just wizards with different flavor text. Fighters? What keeps them from getting ranger or barbarian feel? For that matter, what about GROUP fighters, who have abilities that are useful only when fighting with people in their style?

Anyway, where I was going with this was that there IS a point to make a break from the pidgeonholed archetypes of DnD. I think the rogue is the cleanest and most flexible class in Pathfinder. I'm not advocating an 'Adventurer' class that picks class abilities as they go up, but if blurring the lines a little prevents the hexblade/duskblade/runeblade/bloodblade/whatever dichotomy from surfacing, then I'm all for fuzzy edges.
