Ok, Alpha release 1 is 65 page, Pathfinder Beta currently listed as 300+ pages, while the final hardcover rulebook is projected to be 420 pages. With a page count hovering in the middle like that, I was curious, do you expect the Beta release to be a self-contained rulebook, or will it be more like the Alpha, in which you still use the D&D core books, substituting Pathfinder rules where applicable?

I'm still holding onto the hope that Pathfinder will be the new Rules Cyclopedia- all the rules, monsters and info needed in one tidy package.
That would make me dance with glee.
Dance, I say!
Well, probably not in the Beta version, and it doesn't sound like the monsters will be part of it either, since Erik said a logical follow up to the RPG book would be a monster book.

Ah, I hadn't seen that. Still, it would be nice to have a selection of iconic monsters in the Pathfinder core. Just something to let folks run a game with the bare bones until a monster book comes along.
Thinking mainly of those people who might encounter the game once D&D is out of print here.

Hmmm...since one of the stated goals of the Pathfinder RPG is to keep the rules in print, and the Beta is supposed to be feature complete (assuming they are sticking with what that name implies), I infer that the Beta will be a stand-alone game, albeit without the breadth of monsters, etc. that the 3 corebooks (with their 960 pages) provide.

Everything you need from the PHB and DMG will be in the PRPG. A Monster Manual in whatever form it'll take will be a separate product.
Now I'll make the huge assumption that once beta is put to print, it'll be the COMPLETE book and not piecemeal.
As for how will they fit it all in? Well it's simple, there's a lot of content in the DMG that isn't Open content... so none of that goes in. We don't need most of the pregenerated stat blocks for NPCs that are in the DMG, so that COULD be cut. And there's another 20-30% more that most people don't even need to look at that can be cut.

IME, Alpha tests are incomplete games, there to just test certain concepts or core ideas. Beta Tests are complete but unfinished games. They are suppose to see how all the test core concepts of the alpha test work together.
Does that help?
Yep, thanks.

I second this question. And I for one would like to know soon. Because my boss is putting together a program to buy back 3.5 PHBs and DMGs so he can carry 3.5 stuffs into the future and he wants to know if he needs to stock up on them for Pathfinder as well.
Given I have more at stake here than a personal library I would kind of like a concrete answer because if the core books are required for Pathfinder then the store needs to start the buyback program last month if we're going to be able to carry Pathfinder in any real way.

I hate people that think they deserve a reply personally.
It's that simple.
I'm sorry, it's my JOB to ask that question. Because I work at the store that supplies D&D to my entire county. I represent more than a request concerning a single library. I represent a few thousand libraries. They're called customers. Paizo customers and my own customers.

Sure there is. She basically said the answers given aren't good enough because it's not from someone official.

Hey, I just don't want a repeat of the Promethean fiasco. The store stockpiled up on books because there had been some interest on boards and in the community. Lost almost a thousand dollars. We can't give the books away free with World of Darkness purchases and we're trying. They've been out of print for what, a year? And we still have them sitting around taking up space.
I also don't want the problem we had with Scion. Lost two dozen customers because we didn't get the books in on time.
So it's my job to know how many of the core books the store needs to continue to support D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder. And yes I know that I can just have people ask the paizo guys at GAMA this month.

Then send an e-mail instead of posting on the forum if the answers from the userbase aren't good enough. When you post on a forum you'll mostly get userbase answers. It's what I do when I need an answer from someone at Paizo and they allways answer within 24 hours. (That's my personal experience.)
If you would have searched the forums you would have noticed that Paizo said that there are 2 things why they made Pathfinder RPG.
1. It is to keep 3.5 going when the PHB and DMG go out of stock. The Pathfinder RPG should replace these books to it's best abilities.
2. There is one BIG difference to notice. It is an updated version of 3.5 with other words, there are rule changes, it is not going to be an exact copy of the current books. They wanted to customize 3.5 to befit Pathfinder the best so not everything is going to stay the same. Kinda how 3.5 is and is not 3.0
edit: 1st paragraph is not intended as an attack.

Not taken as an attack.
But consider I sell to people like the userbase here. Like the userbase here some are high-strung, some are nice, some don't say anything, occasionally you find the crazy nut screaming at me demanding to know why I don't carry the latest WoW expansion. Haven't met the crazy guy here and I really hope I don't. I need to know what's going down in terms of what the publishers are publishing but I also need to know what the userbase thinks.
That and I can mine you guys for info and not get yelled at for alienating customers.
