Bonus Cantrips?

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

I think that 0th level spells should be added to the table of bonus spells based on ability scores. Even with the new system of infinite Cantrips (and Orisons) it's not that big of a deal. I never understood why they weren't on the table in the first place. For some reason my Wizard can cast plenty of extra spells 1st level and up, but still only 4 0th level spells.

ya have a point there.

Scarab Sages

I never understood the reason for the absence either. It's not like 0 level spells are all that game breaking.

Exactly!

I would actually reduce the Bonus Slot Levels by one while keeping the table to itself.
Meaning: You get one bonus cantrip (0 level spell) with IN 12-13 (instead of a 1st Lvl Spell), one bonus 1st level spell with IN 14-15 (instead of a 2nd Lvl Spell) and so forth.

Adding the 0 level spells upfront to the usual table isn't a good idea, since every spellcaster would than always get the extra 0 level spell if it is granted at IN/WE/CH 10-11, since this is already the minimum requirement to cast spells!

I don't think moving all other spell levels up the list is the answer. I think placing your first bonus 0th level spell at the same point as 1st level (12-13) and just give you your second 0th level bonus spell one step earlier (18-19).

I think there are two reaons:

1. As you said, they don't really matter. Why bother?

2. The math gets a bit weird. 12-13 is +1 and give you a slot on level 1. 14-15 is +2 and you get +1.

With 0-level bonus spells, 10-11 (+0) would give you a bonus. But as has been said, that's already the minimum needed to cast. Why would the minimum already give a bonus?

In the end, it's not a big deal either way. I say, leave the table alone. Either that or just extrapolate, only changing the (new) first line with the 0-level spells.

Leave the table alone, cantraps get free casting now, that's plenty bonus to me.
