Fun fact. Acererak is a priest of Orcus as well as a wizard.

Does this mean you didn't plan that from the beginning? I was assuming that's why you tied Alessia's backstory into the Tomb of Horrors, considering we're playing through Dead Gods.

Also, because my character wouldn't say it, but I absolutely would...

Sooooo. Honestly I just did some digging and … damned if I can figure it out. Alessia mentioned the ‘lich lord’ while being freed in Tcian Sumere. But, I cannot find any direct mention of ToH. Which is bizarre, as I know OF that module, but I have never actually played it. Also, Acererak was never a big thing with me.

Sometimes this shyte just writes itself I guess …

lol. No worries. I just pored over the ooc thread from 2017-2019. It is mainly me apologizing for not posting.

Oh, and that unpleasant argument about stealth v. Perception a former player had with me. Ugh.

Sorry, I just do not recall but I think we did when we returned to Sigil. I'd be surprised if we didn't.

WOW, Yeah,

I have been trying (Very hard, still not perfect, but I am working at it!) to keep track of all the treasure stuff for this thread. I remember all of this stuff, and with certain exceptions, I think we voted to sell most of it. (?)
(Holster went to Blayze, Ring to Hamar, not certain if we ever ID the potions, wand or scrolls, but I would have voted we kept all that)
I WANT to say that we mostly agreed to sell things that no one wanted (The +2 armor, unless Karrin claimed it? Silver raven figurine, etc)

I DO recall a conversation about Blayze asking if the arrows enchantments could be transferred to bullets? :) (Justin could have managed that with a high enough roll? He has spells to help with the negs involved.)

I do NOT recall having a sudden influx of cash, so knowing that the Strange Book ID was supposed to need RP, I highly suspect we all got side tracked and continued on?

Perhaps a quick re-visit of who claims what, just to make certain, and cash out the rest? How does that sound?

Justin would have voted to keep all books, potions, wands, scrolls, etc. At least until ID'd and usefulness appraised. (If Wand of Magic Missile is 1st lvl, sell it, If higher, keep, etc.)

He is also keeping the Mummy Wrappings. (They are in his inventory) He has ideas for a Magic item to help squishy wizzie survival. (Its in the book! NOT custom. Just need time and GP to make it!) ;P

Karrin has +4 mithral breast plate so she wouldn't have been interested in the breast plate

Very, VERY true. ;P

I managed to dig up a PDF copy of Return to the Tomb of Horrors, and have read or skimmed most of it. First off, man that adventure is a long hard slog. It doesn't even look fun to play, especially considering that a full 1/4 of the module is literally just an insert of the original Tomb of Horrors partially converted to Second Edition.

There is some interesting lore there, though, and I did manage to tease out one potentially relevant bit: Acererak can possess/control any undead creature, including intelligent undead.

Yeah, that sucker is nasty, I've considered running it as a one off as most of my D&D groups (when I was was running D&D, I've taken a break) were narrative based I never wanted to just mow down PCs like some sort of Killer DM just for fun. I prefer to kill people IRL instead, the real fun part of course is hiding the bodies.

I don't think Pat will mind so I am posting for potential recruitment here, in May I will be running on the boards a new campaign a mix of Carrion Crown and Strange Aeons set in Ravenloft, Pathfinder 1E rules. I believe the original recruitment group might be one or two shy, would anyone be interested?

Well, good news: there were bewbs on display later on in the evening. Bad news: mostly they faced the bead tosses so you only saw them from the back. Although one woman was completely topless in the crowd which was a daring choice.

So my adventure with the New Orleans thieves guild:

In the crush of Bourbon Street, a man and woman who seemed to be drunk, plowed into me. They stayed pressed very close, like I couldn’t get them off me. Then I felt a man go for my back pocket. Fortunately, being a paranoid soul I had moved my wallet to my front pocket. I would have shrugged it off to possibly just my imagination, but ….

Five minutes later the same trio tried the same thing AGAIN! Literally plowing into me and the dipper going after my back pocket a second time. I guess they were upset their first try came up dry and they figured a fat merchant-looking guy like me had to have a coin purse bulging with gold.

But after my initial anger, I was fascinated by the classic distraction/restraint/dip method they used. I’m sure there was another person in the crowd to hand my wallet off to if they had snagged it.

Yeah, bewbs on display is not as prevalent as they USED to be, but apparently no amount of law-making and enforcing can ever make that quite go away.

(For better or worse? YOU be the judge!) ;P

Wow.
Sad but true stories of the Mardi Gras life.

Honestly? I'm only surprised by the fact that you didn't body slam all three of them into the Bourbon Street pavement. :)

Now THAT would have been a show! ;)

But seriously, how good a target must you have presented? :)
I mean, this was obviously not their FIRST rodeo. (Although it sounds like they were not 'Legendary' or anything at it)

But to try a target, fairly hard it sounds like, come up empty, and then try AGAIN?
Either they were desperate,
or you were a very tempting target,...
OR they were just p!$$3d that they didnt get anything from you the first time. Their 'professional' pride was at stake. :P

Either way, now THAT'S a good MArdi Gras Story! :)

Storyteller Shadow wrote:

Disasterous plays? Plays about disasters?

Lately?
ALL of the above! ;P

Yeah, unfortunately during large events, (mardi gras, Superbowl, etc) the powers that be put up very effective anti-dimensional-traversal barriers.

It's a real pain in my aging keister.

Sorry Pat, maybe next time? :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Yeah, they were good in the fact that they used the crowd to get away quickly. It always sounds good to want to beat them, but …

There were at least three of them in the pickpocket ring. Probably more like five. They were likely natives of NOLA, and being a portly man with bad knees edging closer to sixty than fifty with a 4’11 fiancée in tow I didn’t feel comfortable starting a brawl in a very big and tight crowd. Five million ways THAT could have gone sideways.

Honestly, I’m glad I had the experience of Bourbon Street, if for nothing else than to give my brain context when I read about it. But, at this point in my life I don’t think I’d want to repeat the experience.

Shadow's Status

I'm not a man that likes crowds so it sounds like a nightmare to me, but glad you were enriched (and not impoverished) by the experience Pat!

The bewbs thing I have heard was being tamped down, i think they want it to be somewhat of a more family friendly environment (or so I hear) and lewdness isn't tops when selecting for family friendly behavior.

Seriously Pat, I'm just glad that you (AND Fiancee) are ok. :)

ALSO seriously,
MAN, I REALLY would have loved to be watching the evening news, (I actually do not watch it, but my wife insists) and see a report about a brawl w/ pickpockets on Bourbon street, and then realize,
"Hey, I KNOW that guy!" ;)

Yeah, crowds are not for everyone. And the crime has risen MUCH higher since Katrina. My mom always said that Mardi Gras sounds like fun, except for the crowds. :) (I now feel the same way entering Walmart during the Holiday season) >_<

Funniest part about the Bewbs thing? (To me anyway?)

The timing with the newer laws and 'crackdowns' were happening when they were airing episodes of New Orleans during Mardi Gras on one of those Real Police TV shows. (COPS?)
But the episodes airing were filmed the year prior, BEFORE the new laws and crackdowns. So People were running to Mardi Gras and then getting upset that they were getting arrested for doing what they had just seen on TV! ;P

The evening news during Mardi Gras THAT year was pure entertainment! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

When I saw Shadow talking about dropped plot points in another game, it reminded me of this long one I dropped into this game some 15 years ago. The player who experienced it is gone, so it can never be explored, but I was ready to have the group experience the wonder and terror of the Kingdom of the Ghouls:

Old post 2008:
Blacky finds a small niche in the tunnel wall she can huddle into. The tread of feet resolve themselves into a party of four beings. Blacky can smell a mixture of rot , perfume and mortuary chemicals coming off them. Whoever they are, they are no longer among the living.

The beings walk in a diamond formation, with one small burly plate-clad dwarf in front and one in back. The dwarves are unremarkable, save that their skin is deathly pale with an underlying purplish tint and their eyes glow red. Sharp teeth peep out of their grim mouths. Both carry large war hammers.

In the middle are two strange beings. The first is a tall slender elf with pale purple-tinted skin, red eyes, and prominent shark-like teeth. His nails are manicured, but they extend much farther than they should, come to sharp points, and are painted black. He is dressed in a rich black silk tunic and hose, and sports several jewelry pieces of considerable worth on his person. A pair of matched rapiers in bejeweled scabbards rest at his hip. A black silk cloak flows behind him, clasped at his shoulder with a brooch of onyx with a pattern of three silver skulls diagonally embossed on it. A stylish floppy black beret covers his bald head. The beret has a triple-skull brooch on it as well. He carries a brass cage that holds a large beetle. The beetle sheds an odd yellow-green luminance from its back area.

The second being shares the corpse-pale purple-tinted coloring, red eyes and sharp teeth of the others. He is human-looking, dressed in a dark robe covered in silver-colored cabbalistic symbols. The robe is secured with a wide jeweled belt that carries several large pouches and a scabbarded dagger. He wears a circlet of black iron decorated with blood-red crystal skulls on his bald wrinkled head. A set of iron-studded leather gauntlets cover his hands, and several pieces of expensive jewelry decorate him. In one hand he carries a large leather-bound tome. In the other he holds a large rune-covered spear, which he twitches slightly towards the pale elf while he is talking for emphasis. A black translucent pyramidal crystal traces an orbit around his head. Their sibilant conversation becomes clearer as they approach.

Robe-clad human : “ … I tell you Vidession, I need to report some progress to His Eternal Nocturnal Majesty when I return to Darakhul. He hungers for the Crown, and he is a ghoul with little patience for excuses.”

Silk-clad elf, presumably Vidession : “The Pale Emperor needs to understand that Sigil is a hard city to navigate, even with the aid of our demonic allies. The information we seek here is sought by several groups, not least the Black Prince’s minions. My agents and I have been combing the Lady’s Library and many private collections, but some doors resist even my charms.”

The four beings come to a halt near Blacky’s hiding place. Blacky can see a mangy patchwork-furred cat riding on the robed man’s shoulders, its body hideously disfigured with stitched scars. The cat seems to be pieced together out of several different felines, and its eyes glow a pale swamp- gas green. The stink of dead flesh and strong perfume assaults Blacky’s nose. The robe-clad pale human snorts derisively.

“Faugh! You do not have to return to the White City and stand before Emperor Nicoforus upon his Throne of Skulls and report failure. I’ll be lucky if he doesn’t stake me on the surface for the sun to crisp!”

Vidession chuckles.

“Nicoforus will rant and glower, but he values your wisdom too highly to do aught but grumble, Eressar. Dress the failure in the garments of success. Tell him I am following several promising lines of information on the whereabouts of the Crown, and it will be within his pale clutches soon.”

Robed human(?), presumably Eressar: “ Easier said than done, Vidession. Nicoforus wants the Crown, not reassuring words. See that you follow up on those promising lines of information before the Black Prince’s agents do.”

Vidession looks at the sewer tunnel wall.

“Is this the spot?”

Eressar nods. He hands his spear and tome to one of the silent dwarves. He brings a small vial of reddish liquid and a horsehair brush from within a belt pouch.

“I will say my farewells here.” Eressar grumbles “Just remember that all of our hard-won power and influence at the Buried Court rests on finding that thrice-dammed Crown for our Dread Emperor. The future expansion of our Empire depends upon its magic. Spare no effort Vidession. Your undeath hangs in the balance. “

Eressar uncorks the vial and the metallic reek of fresh blood fills the sewer. He dips the brush in the vial, using it to draw a door-shaped form and several strange runes on the cobwebbed sewer wall. A portal flares to life and Eressar and the two silent plate-clad dwarves step through. Blacky smells a miasmic reek of carrion, mold and old rotted things issuing from the portal. Blacky roll me a Perception Check.. Vidession stays at the entrance of the portal until it fades. When the stones have returned to their original form he takes a small cloth and wipes the blood smears away. When finished he walks away down the sewer tunnel, lantern beetle swinging.
