I like the idea of 4 classes. Fighter/Cleric/thief/mage.
Just convert the other classes abilities into skills and feat chains, so a fighter can become a ranger/paladin by selecting the right skills and feats. A thief can become a bard the same way. A cleric can choose druidic feats skills, spells, etc.

I really like the idea of simplified classes. In my own house rules doc. I've been working on a similar idea with only three classes, a warrior class, skill based class and a spellcasting class. All the various class abilities are being converted to feat chains and each class gets a feat progression.
However, like the previous poster said, one of the most important priorities of PFRPG is to keep it compatible with 3.5 so I don't think that's an option.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing *more* classes. While I appreciate the idea of 4 base classes (as the OP incorrectly assumes), that'd be too big of a stretch for the game, IMHO.
I wouldn't mind seeing some of the old school classes like Assassin and Cavalier, and maybe even Illusionist, or some sort of Fighter/Wizard hybrid.

Then this variant may be just the thing for you, but I don't see Pathfinder headed this way.

Hmm... a Nightblade, a fighter/illusionist gish with some assassin abilities. Where can I play one?!?!?!!
No honestly, I'm not sure if the real question is whether 4 classes or 11+X classes, but if players can create balanced character concepts without resorting to brokenizing(TM) splat books.
For example, a Nightblade might be a variant rogue, with feats that relate to assassination (can we please make Poison Use and Death Attack feats for rogish characters to take?!). Then we'd swap out certain abilities to get access to the Illusion school of spells (1 spell per level even is great). OR, maybe the new sorcerer will allow something here.

I didn't incorrectly assume anything. I realize there are plans for all eleven core classes. It was just a suggestion of mine. Paizo wants feedback, so I'm giving it.

Maybe so, but it would be best to keep in mind our suggestions should be 3.5E compatible to be truly helpful. Changing a core system to such an extent as this would definitely be tossing the existing rules out the window.
