Why the need to Gimp Combat Expertise?

The modifier you add to your AC/subtract to your attack is now based on your INT score. It does not scale anymore when your BAB increase.

It's pretty useless as I doubt well see many fighters with an 18 in INT

Nice to see some one else has a problem with this.

I also see a problem with what they did to power attack. Only a barbarian who puts everything into strength can get to +17 mod to strength at level 20. Sucks for the fighters and other classes that want to use power attack.

Actually, shouldn't Combat Expertise be a de facto feat for the fighters (i.e. They get it automatically). This would make them more interesting to play

I'm also bothered by this - intelligence bonuses won't increase as the fighter goes up in level, and I don't like the idea of fighters wanting Int-stat boosters to improve their AC.

How about tying combat expertise to base attack bonus, and saying that a constant 1/3 or 1/2 of base attack becomes armor class? Combat expertise would then require +2 or +3 BAB.

It might also be a good idea to forbid the use of combat expertise and power attack during the same round.

I think it's a really good idea. It gives fighters a valid reason to have a high intelligence. As things stand in the 3.5 ruleset, fighters really only require two stats - strength and constitution. Making combat feats that require other abilities will make players have to choose their stats more carefully, and you should see a wider range of builds come out.

Combat Expertise only ever scaled up to 5 in 3.5 without additional feats, anyhow. It's not a big loss, IMO. Especially since fighters will have higher AC than in 3.5 with the armor specialty class features.

I agree. Combat Expertise and Power Attack should just be things that any Fighter automatically knows how to do, going all-out to sacrifice finesse for power, or pulling back and fighting defensively that much more effectively than a Wizard using the Fighting Defensively option.

I'd also love if they could trade-off in other ways as well. A Reckless / All-Out Attack that sacrifices AC for Atk (like a Charge, but better) and an Accurate / Precision Attack that sacrifices Damage for Atk would also be neat options.

Power Attack is limited by BAB, and for the others to have the same mechanical limitations, the Fighter would probaly have to have a similar limitation, either based on some attribute (but certainly not Intelligence, IMO, having it based on one's Dex bonus to AC, perhaps being limited to doubling it, would make much more sense!), or on some other bonuses that the Fighter gets to Damage or AC by level (proposed in several of these threads).
