A Radical View on Saving Throws

Races & Classes

Had an idea kicking around in my head for a while now.
This stems from how fighters always seem to be the target of 'hold person'.

Why is it that EVERY fighter has to have the same saving throw make-up?
Or wizards? etc....

What if we were able to take points for our saves and distribute them as we see fit?

eg: A fighter gets a +2 base fort save a t first level right?
Take those 2 points and either put them both in your will save. Or your Ref save. Or one in each. Or leave it in Fort if you so desire?

Who is to say a fighter can't be strong of Will and not so much on the Fortitude scale.

Any thoughts?

Iron Will (along with Great Fortitude and Lightning Reflexes) exists as a feat for just this reason. Perhaps an Improved Iron Will (Improved Great Fortitude/Improved Lightning Reflexes) feat would also make sense, granting a +4 to Will (Fort/Ref) saves, overlaps with Iron Will (Great Fortitude/Lightning Reflexes).

Also, bards have good Ref and Will saves, clerics and druids have good Fort and Will saves, monks have good saves in all, and rangers have good Fort and Ref saves. Barbarians, fighters, paladins, rogues, sorcerers, and wizards each only have one good save. This is part of balancing the classes against each other. Of course, the balancing isn't perfect (the paladin is a bit weak, IMO), but that's a different issue.
