Maybe not the place for this, but whatever:

www.white-wolf.com/graduation

For those who cannot link it...

Spoiler:
"White Wolf is giving away free copies of the award-winning Exalted Second Edition! We’re offering you an opportunity to break out of the Dungeons & Dragons cycle, and graduate to a new kind of fantasy game. We’re confident that once you step up and experience Exalted’s world of epic fantasy and larger-than-life heroes, you won’t ever want to search another 10 x 10 room again.

Why play a rehash of the same old game, when you could be exploring Epic Fantasy Re-Imagined all summer?

Fans who want to graduate from D&D have until April 28th to sign up to receive their free Exalted book. Supplies are limited, though, and once all 2500 books have been ordered, that’s it.
The free Exalted core books will be available for pickup at your local store during Graduation Week (May 26th – 31st).

Exalted: Graduate Your Game will be held at participating hobby shops throughout the United States and Canada between March 21st and April 28th.

Anyone can sign up for Exalted: Graduate Your Game at a local participating hobby shop. If your local store is not participating, encourage them to get involved!

In order to become one of the 2500 graduates to receive a free copy of Exalted, we only ask that you send us your old copy of the Dungeons & Dragons Revised Third Edition (3.5) Players Guide.

Click the appropriate button below for more details."

Does anyone else feel as insulted as I do right now? Suddenly I'm playing an immature game? And what are they doing with those PHB's?? Burning them?? I feel ill...

Well, the OGL won't let people reprint a (very) few parts of the PHB, and soon the PHB will no longer be available.

So maybe they're planning to hang onto them for a few years, then sell them to the increasing population of people who join 3.5 existing groups, but who don't already have 3.5 books of their own. (Face it, if you're sticking with 3.5 and you have new people join your group on occasion, eventually, you're going to need more books for them.)

Yeah... as a typically ardent White Wolf supporter, this was pretty low.

Can't we all just get along?

Pretty good marketing move on their part. I'll be curious to see how fast that offer fills up.

No, I do not feel insulted. I always felt like I 'graduated' to bigger and better games. We could argue until we are blue in the face which is a ‘better’ game and therefore a ‘graduation’. It comes down to preference.

I think this a great marketing ploy to steal away some D&D players who are looking for something else.

I dunno. There is some serious humor there. I mean, isn't Wizards telling you how bad 3x is and how much better 4x is? Whats the difference here? At least they're offering to let folks "upgrade". I can't see it happending, but if WotC offered to let people trade in their 3.5 PHB for a 4x PHB, would you feel insulted?

What do you expect? It's White Wolf.

And it could be worse: They could insult people who played the old edition of Exalted and let them "graduate" to the new one.

I wish: I have a couple copies of the 1ed stuff that became obsolete within five years.

I recall when TSR did the same thing, asking customers to send in their Magic: The Gathering cards to get free Spellfire cards.

Legend has it that one of the primary reasons for that campaign was that TSR's Jim Ward was a big Magic fan, and he kept most of the cards that were sent in.

Anyway, I guess it didn't really help Spellfire much...

Heh heh, very funny story :-)

I worked in a games/bookstore during the initial M:tG boom and recall well the floods of Spellfire cards that came into the store shortly thereafter. We couldn't give them away. I mean that literally (not figuratively, lol). And believe me, we tried!

The WW thing just makes me laugh. Comeuppance we call it in my part of the world. Even if they fall flat on their faces, kudos to WW for having the balls to take a shot.

Epic characters that can't be killed?

Check.

New edition every 5 years?

Check.

Simplistic cosmology?

Check.

"Dumbed down" rules set?

Check (no numbers here - just dots!).

Kewl powerz?

Check.

Crappy cooler-than-though marketing?

Check.

What a terrific idea, all the elements I like the least about 4e, but without the tactical combat I love!

I got the core rules, didn't think much of them except for two things.

I liked the paralels to oWoD
Geoffry autographed my copy :)

I was never really a big fan of Exalted..

I always Enjoyed their World of Darkness stuff more..

Though there are very thin connections between the 2.

I have almost everything (minus the last hardcover book) from Exalted 1° edition, castebooks and all.

I never "graduated" (ppffffffttt!!) to their second edition. Wait, I never graduated either to the Storytelling system, as I cared mostly of the setting and theme, while I disliked the ruleset.

Bah.

I find this kind of disparative marketing sort of annoying. The very moment you have to play the "mine vs yours" ploy instead of putting forward your product's strenghts, it should ring the alarm bell that something went wrong - see also the recent "it's cool!" debacle.

I feel less insulted - more exasperated.

Give up my 3.5 PHB even if I do play 4e? Nope - I'm sure some of my friends will want to stick with 3.5.

Spend $10 on shipping (to ship book to WW and get Exalted from WW) and give up my 3.5 PHB valued at $16 used on Amazon? Why? Where's the savings? Mine as well buy Exalted on Amazon.

I think they're overestimating people's desire to unload 3.5 even before 4e has come out. I guess if you really want Exalted and really don't want 3.5, it makes some sense. Don't know if they're going to sell many newcomers to the game though.

I really don't warm to this superheroic fantasy thing. Not for me. Not insulted.

You're so funny, Sebastian. The dots do nothing.

Actually, it would be more accureate to say "they don't HELP much with making the rules simpler"; I just wanted to use a lame joke.

The dots have a certain elegance. And it sure makes fillable pdf sheets that much more useful.

While I don't necessarily agree with you on some issues CourtFool I wholeheartedly agree with you here.

With all of the hoo hah surrounding 4e this is as good a time as any for somone to "jump ship" from D&D and try something new. White Wolf are trying to entice people to a new game, and trying to boost the player base of Exalted at the same time (I don't think they have any trouble enticing people to WoD, even if I don't like WoD II as much as Oldskool WoD).

When two people quarrel, a third rejoices.

I'm surprised that there are not more companies who want to profit from this strife.

Paizo should buy the PHBs off WW and give them away to anyone who subscribes the the third adventure path. ;-)

I added this to the other White Wolf offer thread, but I have to say that after living for one year with two Exalted players (whom were quite outspoken on this subject, and had even more outspoken friends), I had thought that this train of thought was a diseased, childish offshoot of angry "I'm better than you" posters on the internet. I never thought that a company in this industry would degrade itself to the level of using these tactics. Guess I was wrong, and on a personal level, I am insulted. With the amount of strife that's going on in the DnD community, wanting to fan the flames of an already annoying and senseless debate (Dungeon and Dragons vs. Exalted) is in poor taste.

On a marketing side, I wish that they hadn't used the term "graduation" and rather used something like "Is your system losing it's support? Why not try a product that has two years of support." See, then I would have considered their offer.

Now I'm going to have a lot of trouble in using any of White Wolf's products. This has really soured my position on a lot of their products and systems.

Well if the books aren't selling, giving them away makes sense.

Stockpiling masterwork books in exchange is pure win for them.

New lamps for old.

Hate to say it, but WotC has brought this kind of fire on themselves. With 4E, the two settings aren't comming out for almost a year, The GSL is lagging and most outside publishers are waiting for the GSL. That leaves a big hole in the market for a very long time. Whitewolf is number two. It can only help them (Just as Paizo coutinuing to put out Pathfinder during the lag.)

Not at all.

Some feel that WoTC with the cancelation of Dragon and many of their methods of proving the superiority of 4e, have already gone this route and they, WoTC, is telling us that we're playing a less then stellar game.

I personally don't feel that way MOST of the time but some of the DDI Dragon editorials have left me cold and wondering for the billionth time, "Well, if you couldn't handle the DDI in a timely fashion, what on earth were you smoking to cancel the license."

Uh oh. I smell irony in the air.

I wonder how Wizards of the Coast is responding to White Wolf's cheeky dare.

From Peter Schaefer's blog on Gleemax:

"I think this is a great deal. If you know you want to play 4E, trade in your old 3.5 book for a copy of WW's fun epic fantasy RPG. ... Or you can mine the setting for ideas to use in D&D 4E - I'm already thinking about how to import the tone and feel of Exalted into the 4E system, and I think it'll work pretty well."

So they think that their own previous product is so inferior that giving it away for anything else is a good deal? Figures.

wizards and their employees want to be first in everything. They can't stand White Wolf being the foremost arrogant ****s in the business.

I like my 3.5 PHB, but would happily send them my 3.0 PHB. :-P
