Well, I can't believe this hasn't been posted up yet... evidently we are getting Journey Bread in 4e (think Elven Waybread, AKA Lembas, from Lord of the Rings). See the latest Confessions of a Full-Time Wizard...
"I might actually use some of this stuff. How about tucking a couple loaves of journeybread in your carry-on? You only need a few bites to fill you up, and it’s good for you! Beats a $15 tub of Pringles."

Confessions of Full-Time WizardI have to say this started a deep chuckle that brought my wife in the room and when she read it, she just smacked her forehead... Lembas!

Its not like the elves are the only ones in Tolkein to make such a thing. The main difference is that Lembas apparently manages to taste as good as a Beorning honeycake while being as filling and durable as Cram, the journeybread made by men.
Trail food has always been part of D&D and generally most folks don't pay much attention to what it comprises. This will fit right in with that.

Assuming that it's not an exaggeration in the article, Iron Rations a)weighed more than 'a couple of bites' and b) didn't taste good, being mostly hardtack and jerky.
That said, I remember there being a lembas analouge in the Complete book of elves, and maybe Aurora's as well. Not as filling though.

Yep, but back in the day we did not care what stuff weighed, and as long as it was listed on your index card (characters used to fit on them) then we assumed you were well fed.

My players right now are using basically the same thing from one of the many 3.5 books from WotC. I will see if I can get a page reference. So, I am pretty sure they have been in D&D, just not in the PHB... not a big deal to me... I don't find the logistics of figuring how much people will eat at any given time a fun excercise in the game (sure you can have the occasional circumstance in which they have to figure out how to survive... but that needs to be an exception to add fun).

I think the reason it hadn't been posted here yet, is because some of us here on the Paizo Boards were starting to think that if we ignored the "Confessions of..." articles then we could pretend they don't exist.
Thanks for the reminder.....
At least you were decent enough to post a link and not the entire transcript.
