Hey gang. Today's Ask Wizards question is "Will there be multiclassing in 4E? If so, how will it work?"
I had to laugh at this answer. Perkins said, "Multiclassing has been an integral part of previous editions. It is very much in keeping with the flavor of D&D." *Insert pained laughter* Well what exactly makes this piece of flavor sacred to you Chris that you felt it should be kept?
Oh and he also said that Multiclassing is still in playtesting and he can't talk about how its going to work yet.
Comment away everyone...

I am amazed they are still "PLAYTESTING" since they've been working on 4E since 2005 that is a just not making sense. And shouldn't you be like getting your books printed by now.(How rushed is that process gonna be).
*Note if you pay a visit to the D&D Message board about the the recently updated Desert of Desolation miniature Stat cards, have just been released and contain many mistakes.

About what? He said almost nothing. Was WotC so lacking in stuff to post that they fell back on a video like this? Oh, wait... silly question.
- Q: Will there be multiclassing in 4E? A: Yes.
- Q: If so, how will it work? A: We'll tell you when we know.
In other words: I'm not impressed :)

WotC is no stranger to shoddy editing these days.
I've said it a thousand times, I'm sure: professionals don't put forward second-rate work. Everything they put out there (even free stuff on the web) reflects their committment to quality -- or lack thereof.
They've sure given us some reasons to worry about 4/e's quality.

The 4e PHB has already gone to the printer and they don't even know what the multiclassing rules are? Or the XP rules? Or the mechanics of certain magical abilities?
First Voice: Geez, this is beyond sloppy. All you kool-aid drinking pro-4e folks out there who keep telling us how wonderful 4e is going to be are all gonna have to apologize....
(**sounds of scuffling and small-scale violence in the background**)
Second Voice: This rant interrupted in the interest of "It's all been said before". We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Not to sound like a Paizo-Fanboy (which I am starting to count myself among), their quality is superb and they're committed to an excellent product. I really wish they could get the licence for Dungeons and Dragons. Hell, I wish they could own the licence.

Tobus,
If you watched the previous ridiculous videos, you would have noticed that Scott Rouse mentions the "yet to be released" 4th Edition Preview books. It is pretty obvious that these teaser videos were filmed some time ago. So they aren't still playtesting, rather they are marketing poorly.
I've noticed that all of the videos were shot at the same time. They are wearing the same clothes, exact same background, the lighting is the same, etc. My take is that the videoes were shot 2-4 months ago. Releasing tidbits like this...is pointless. Why drivel out the video which is so old just to post something, expecially when you can't actually offer any information.
I get the impression that someone from another dept. grab a camera on a whim, ran down to the developers and interviewed them by surprise. They appear so unprepared for any question. Hardly the way an in company interview should be for being aired on the internet.

Well luckily if you subscribe to the Digital Initiative you can have all the errata and patches for the books. Oh, you mean that you shouldn't need to pay for patches to a shoddy system.....umm..there are also lots of other stuff in the DDI that make the subscription WELL worth it. D&D Exec-in-disguise*snicker* I wonder if they all bought that? Fools.....bet my bonus this year is gonna be Kewl and Phat!

I know a lot of people multiclass, but I haven't seen it in my games in a very long time. I have seen people use PrCs but not much in the way of multiclassing. I'm not sure I would go so far as to say integral. It also seems a little counter (ok maybe I'm stretching a bit here) to the whole, we have fixed every class so that everyone has something to do. Shouldn't multiclassing be less integral in this case?

I used to not bother but then I ran a dwarven fighter/cleric in 2e and then I guess the bug hit.
Last multi-class character i ran was under 3.0 and that was because the dm decided the ghost of an ancient black dragon wasn't good enough under 3.0 so he had it age my character 60 years following which being curious about sorcerors I ask if I could have my character multi-class and he said yes and then promptly hit us with high attack monsters when i tried going without armour and once the character donned the full plate again and began making spell failure rolls he turned around and said my character was corrupted and would need to pay 28,000gp for a greater restoration to remove the aging effect needless to say when the money was collected he then said there wasn't anyone available to cast it...Sorry for going a little off topic I thought I was over that phase it has been over a year since I quit that group and now the only d&d games I have to run myself and 4e pretty much blew my interest in eberron, pathfinder allayed my fears but this video mockery and the ring business... well I'll be honest I wish I never even upgraded from 3.0 to 3.5 at least then I can ignore 4e and actually have something positive to think about upgrading up to 3.5 instead.

Between that answer and a previous one regarding the "upcoming" preview books for December and after, it seems almost certain most of these videos were made several months ago. Probably in August or Septemer after Gen Con.

I agree -- which doesn't get them off the hook. It just makes their work look shoddy. Again.
I'm getting more confused as I type (and think about) this.
- They didn't have to say a thing. Nobody was clamoring for an answer to this question.
- They could have made an updated video. Evidently they wished to avoid the effort and expense of a 15-second video (which, incidentally, I have the resources to make in about 5 minutes in my own home).
- They could have put the answer in print. It would have taken about two minutes.
What are we supposed to think?!? Am I supposed to expect that, miraculously, they demonstrated uncharacteristic competence while they were writing the rules? This is not the behavior of a company from which I want to buy products.

I'm a proud and unabashed Paizo fanboy -- they've given me reason to be one :)
So is that gender-neutral, or would a woman be a fangirl? :P
