Teleport Gone Awry

Dragon and Dungeon Transition Discussion

What appears to be the first adventure for digital "Dungeon" #153 is up on the WotC site. I was a little surprised (but perhaps shouldn't have been), seeing as they haven't released the compiled #152 yet.

I liked the idea behind this adventure, be that's about it. The write up was short, limited in scope, and (in my humble opinion) just about meh.

For those who may not have the adventure (or won't download it) the premsie was pretty good: give the DM a handy side-trek for (as the title states) a bad teleport. However, the only side-trek they provide is for a result of "similar area" on the teleport - that's it. Just one out of 3 possibilities. And the PCS would end up in a 2 room location with 2 Mindflayers and 2 Thoon Soldiers (from MM V). Woohoo. Six pages of blah.

The least they could have done is give a scenario for each of the other 2 possible outcome of the missed teleport: off target and mishap.

The thing that amused me the most was how the Delve format turned a page-long side trek adventure into a six page long adventure. Example #234 on why we won't ever be switching to the Delve format for Paizo products... It's just to inefficient a space user.

Good point. I've come to think of that format as pointless and annoying, so I won't be surprised if WotC keeps it up.

By the way James....

Need....more.....Demonomicon! Need...Demon...Prince...fix!!

Glad to hear that. I can't stand the page flipping. So WoTC forced it on you when you wrote "Expedition to the Ruins of Castle Greyhawk"?

Dungeon 151 hasn't been compiled yet, has it?

No offense James. I hope Paizo never gets so big and popular that it forgets what makes it great: Customer relations.

You guys rock.

When I downloaded this, I assumed it was a table of fun things to do when teleports went awry, imagine my dismay at a yawn of a sidetrek...

This is just silly...

Wow. Two rectangular rooms with (rolls on random encounter table) mind flayers. There's no way I could have come up with that on my own...

I might have been less disappointed if I didn't suspect that this was the only "adventure" coming out in January.

(Bitter? Me? Why do you ask?)

While I find the mini-adventure nice I think I would have prefered list of options similar to several of the small articles that just had list of ideas. Hopefully to avoid being in two campaigns that send you to the mindflayer's home (It is unlikely, but have three or more different arrangements would have reduced this). I also think doing it this way would make it more applicable to 4th edition.

It is nice to have the entire adventure ready for when the players teleport though.

Yeah, after seeing this, I don't hold out much hope for the rest of January. Then again, I stopped having hope for digital "Dungeon" and digital "Dragon" a while back.

What I don't get is why they publish this stuff, it is so bad. Why couldn't they just select one of the better side trek proposals and "print" that one, I submitted something to them that rocked compared to this side-trek (if I do say so myself).

Or are they keeping the ideas for the big 4e release?

I dont think they compiled #151 yet. Or did I miss something?

Why are they writing #153 articles is there is no #151 yet???

You know, it occurs to me that in the DDI era, they could have easily made the adventures the "normal" size with all of the maps you need to run it, but released the "Delve" maps as additional content online. I don't think they will do this, but it would be one way of getting more content into adventures to reclaim it from these space hogs.

Yeah, that Chris Thomasson guy. I don't know how anyone ever let him edit anything...he's the worst editor ever...oh wait...he was a Paizo editor.

I agree that the Delve format leaves nothing to be desired in many ways, but Side Treks have been a staple of Dungeon for some time.

Personally, I wish they would abandon the Delve format and provide "Battlemap" sized maps for print out. They are digital now, after all.

Of course, I also wish Paizo would do the same.

Remember a few years back they had a (free) teleport redirect adventure by Monte Cook? Something about a lighthouse that "sucked in" teleporters. It was WAY cooler than the current 2-room random encounter.

P.S. Delve blows.

Yep, it's still available in their archives. I ran that as a side adventure one day, and it was a hoot.

If I run it again, though, I'm throwing a few more encounters in there. It's a little barren as written.

I believe you need an active Gleemax account.

Go to this site and look for "Tower of Deception".
