You ever notice how many people just "Hate on" D&D? The whole 4th edition thing is making even more of a target. You almost never hear of Shadowrun Haters or WOD Haters. Savage Tales Haters, I never met one. Warhammer Haters are rare. It goes further, Magic Haters are out there but don't focus on the anger. Now World Of Warcraft has some serious hate brewing. While other games like Zelda have no Haters.
If you are a Hater tell me why.

I could offer a sarcastic reply, but since D & D is not worth my time since is is Devil worship, I will not waste my breath on that reply

actually Ive know of WOD haters. Usually its D&D people, or WFRP people. Or people who played old Wod and hate the new.
*shrugs*
WoW is easy to hate (well i dont actually hate it, I hate the manic insane useless obsession people have with it) I played it for awhile, from launch . It was boring. I was so linear I couldnt stand it. I couldnt see paying to play what was an offline poorly written rpg and have to share wit with a bunch of people I didnt like. Or being forced to group with people. It sucked. Waste of money so I stopped.

Jealosy leads to anger. anger leads to hatred and hatred leads to suffering.......
and now for something completly different
I hate......crappy games that ..well actually any game ran wrong or having a bad premise sucks...or if played right with a bad premise is good....Paranoia with the right crowd is a blast...the rules are horrible...gurps is, um too many rules... and every person I know who liked paladium well they had every book and wanted to use them all instead of just one theme and going with it.
different strokes you know....oh and I dont hate D&D!! Just hate the idea of 4 edition so soon and with no real reason and with all the cool fluff removed for a more generic setting. Which actually might be better for homebrew but damn 30 years of history man.30 years ~sigh~ on the plus side my new game features a werewolf and a silver dragon that bicker over everything and then decide to go visit some woman in the forest for cookies.

The only reason that people are so vocal about hating D&D is because it is The Man of the rpg market. There are haters for every rpg, but you don't hear them screaming about it because...I dunno, it's like hitting a man when he's down. Whereas D&D towers above the rest in popularity...you get the idea.

For the most part is all about name recognition. If you ask the average non-gamer what they think about Shadowrun, you'll get a blank stare back. If you ask what they think about D&D you'll probably get something like, "Isn't that for geeks?"

That would be Sassy Smurf.

Hum, painting with quite the broad brush here...I'd wager that there are haters abound for just about any game one can possibly imagine.
As ever,

*laughs* Good post. I'm not a hater, but I have heard of WOD haters. The hard core D&Ders back when WOD was young were appalled by the WOD emphasis on players being traditionally evil creatures, story-telling over the more war-game aspects of D&D, and the almost instant LARP cross-over that came with WOD play.
I do have concerns about 4th Ed. I put more about this on my WWW site at www.drgames.org. I do not think that 4th Ed will put a stake through the heart of gaming. I have some significant questions about who the desired demographic is, but I'm sure that Hasbro has done extensive market research on this. I am concerned that 4th Ed seems to be moving away from table top gaming toward more on-line adventures.
My gut is that the overall effect will be to dilute the market, and I predict that you will see a lot of contributors outside of the inner circle dumping the OGL and going back to producing their own systems like you had in the mid-1980s (there wasn't an OGL back then so you had to do that -- just as a historical note).
At GENCON this year, I heard some substantial folks in the field rumble about just focusing on developing new systems and forgeting about the OGL given that 4th Ed will be incompatible with earlier versions of D&D.

This should raise a dry smile:
This is good stuff to.
My Favorite is this quote from the book
You say, "I don't believe D & D has anything to so with Satan or religion." Then let's turn to page 25, paragraph 3 of "Deities and Demigods (instruction manual) and see what D & D says about itself.
"Serving a deity is a significant part of D & D, and all players should have a patron god."5
Surprise D & D player! Guess which deity you are serving? Satan! The list of deceived victims of this deadly demonic "game" never stops:
Now that is good stuff

Am I the only hater on these boards? Very well. I will sit in the corner with my dunce hat on.
I hate because, in my opinion, there are a plethora of better rules systems out there but you can not find a group to give them the time of day because they will not budge from D&D. So I guess I hate because D&D is so mainstream. It is like everyone telling you how great the Spice Girls are while you are thinking, “Are you all insane?”
It is made worse when you try to mention your game of choice and ten people tell you how much your game sucks because their brother's sister's cousin once knew a guy who said he saw [insert random urban legend about your gaming system here].
It is frustrating because I feel like I am staring at a 1,000 pound gorilla in the room and no one else will acknowledge that it is there.

Go to An anti-D&D comic by an unhappy person..
Bwahahahahah! Oh, my Lord. That crap is AWESOME.
The only thing I find truly sad about that is there are people stupid enough to believe it, and those people can both vote and reproduce, and I still have to defend their rights. Sigh, it's a tough world.

I had hero system way back in the early 90's. I didnt get a chance to play with anyone though. I liked the generic idea but they took it too far IMHO. The version Ihad, you had to define all of your abilities. so if you had a soldier and he had a gun, they didnt give you gun stats. You had to give him a power and define it, and set what it did. It seemed like alot of extra work to me. At the time most everyone I knew was playing Shadowrun, Gurps, Merp, or Torg anyway.
man the alleged christian hatred of D&D, i hate that. I'm a christian, proud of it, and I hate that kinda crap. I had cousins who would give me crap about playing D&D, that it was satanic. I asked them how they knew it was. They said someone told their parents it was, that you had demons and devils in it. I pointed out that you generally fought said demon and devils and helped people and were heroic. I even showed them how it was played. They still of course didnt believe me, saying I "wasnt far enough into it yet to be pulled into the cult". Idiots. Worse yet, anything that had either the word dungeon or dragon in they hated. even if it was unrelated. on their old tandy computer they had a game called "Dungeons of Dagorath" or something like that. Sure a total nod, but still. It was just a vector graphics dungeon crawl. My cousin siad he "loved to play it but he knew he shouldnt cause its evil" You walked in a cave as a fighter and killed big snakes... Ugg!!
My parents had of course heard the same things so they asked me about it being satanic. I did the same thing with them, sat down, and showed them how it was played. They both looked at me and said "that's it?" I nodded and my dad said "well that's boring as hell but if you enjoy it, go for it. Just dont waste a bunch of money on it." At least they arent as dumb as their siblings.
