Oh, it's been far too long...
His crimes grow numerous. Putting his filthy quill to Harliss Javell, greedily snatching up TWO installments of Savage Tide, and now...he dares pollute Pathfinder with his meager attempts at prose, his flaccid sense of over-dramatics.
I will not stand for it. And neither I pray shall you all. We must stand together against the red coats who dare invade our shores. And as so many people are fond of pointing out in recent threads - we Americans must stick together.
So. Let it begin. Pathfinder #3 shall utterly destroy Pathfinder #2 in this smackdown. Skinsaw Murders indeed. Deranged inbred ogres thirsty for love wait in the mountains...and Pett's pathetic ghouls will be their playthings to abuse as they see fit.
Cast your votes ladies and lords. Who is the supreme. Choose wisely.
We have months to wait, but there is no reason you can't start declaring your blind loyalties now.
Oh, and do let the smack talk begin.

... What?
Ogre necropheliacs in the mountains?
... What?

I'm pretty sure that this whole thread is just going to end up as a hair pulling, shrill screaming, premenstrual "Ha! I developed boobs before you" slapfight between Pett and Logue.
:D
But hell, I loved the Harbinger character like no other (tentacled monks shall one day rule the world), so I must side with Logue.

I am about to speak a terrible blasphemy. Those with weak constitutions may wish to look away.
That said.
I like both authors. More importantly, they both have a unique approach to the terrible and awful.
As such, I propose, out of the blackest intent, that they be made to COLLABARATE. At least once.
And now, I flee from the dark powers sent to kill me in my sleep.

Given that I'm from continental Europe there's no reason for blind loyality to anyone of you. But that won't stop me to tell you a bit about my fanboy-history with respect to the Logue-Pett-thing.
I return to Dungeon around #118 at the end of a some years long roleplaying hiatus and so it doesnt last long until my eyes fall on a particularly well-written adventure co-authored by young Master Logue ("The obsidian Eye" #120). But, alas, this young love ends only a month later, when I am absolutely blown away by Richard Pett's "The Styes"). Nothing did I knew about the burning hatred soon to develop between those two young fellows by then.
Ten month later, and what shall I say: "The Prince of Redhand" makes me forget that there ever was a creature called Logue and brings Righard Pett to take over the reins as the "King of Dungeon" from Greg I. whom I love for his brilliant Istivin-Trilogy.
Then comes #133 and when the Chimes ring at Midnight I know that I just have read the best adventure I ever could get my hands on. Buy the way, who is this Pett guy some of the other readers seem to appreciate so much. Must be writing for another magazine I assume.
Oh no wait, he is writing the sequel to the Styes five month later and yes, I have to admit, he is a close second to Master Logue. But he has to learn much if he wants to reach the same heights Master Logue seems to climb each day anew. As he does with ease with "Chains at Blackmaw" (#135), "The Bullywug's Gambit"(#140) and "The Swords of Dragonslake"(#141).
But what is this? In the "Sea Wyvern's Wake"(#141) my loyality suddenly begins to shift. What an extraordinary adventure, what well- thought out NSC, what greatness, what ... I find no words to describe the impression this adventure made to me, I never ever enjoyed just reading thorugh Dungeon so much. My world has a new King.
I'll leave it at here since I haven't found the time to read through the other STAP-adventures since "There be monsters" nor through "Eyes of the Lich Queen", so my vote at the moment goes to King Richard the Great.
But to be honest, bad conscience my be the true reason for this vote. It hasn't been long that we defeated England at their holy ground the new Wembley Stadium and so repeated what we did to them in the very last match at the old stadium. So to give my vote to Richard Pett is the least what I can do to alleviate this pain (don't misunderstand me, Mr. Pett, we won't forgive you what happened in 1966 ;) ).
Afterthought: The end of the Saint-Demain trilogy is the only thing so far which makes me interested in the new Dungeon format over at Wotc. And I'm absolut happy with Pathfinder being written by such great writers as you and Richard Pett have proven to be numerous times. Not to mention all those other great artists working for Paizo. May my loyality change with each new adventure :)

Another vote for me!
I love quoting out of context!
Thanks for the awesome breakdown of Rich and mine's brutal struggle WormysQueue!!! I feel like one of the main character's in The Duelists...the Harvey Keitel one of course, cause Harvey Keitel's cooler.

Hmmm....so the choice is between the the bullywug guy (ooh....scary.../rolleyes) and the guy who seems to like long voyages and shopping in town....hmmmm
I'll predict that the best author for RotRL will be...
Wolfgang Baur, Pathfinder #4, Fortress of the Stone Giants.
You two kids can take your squabble outside...men are trying to work in here.

Great...like we really need to inflate Nic's ego any more. Nic you know where my loyalty lies mate. Now hurry up and send me some tickets so I can come see one of your plays.
Oh...and yes that is a vote for Nic. Trust me, if you spend just 5 minutes with Nic you'll never again vote for anyone else. I mean come on...if his adventures are as insane and kewl as he is in real life (which they are) how could you go wrong and vote for somebody else.
Don't get me wrong. Prett is still a great author. Sorry dude.

I'm sorry this thread is my fault.... I said that I missed these debates in another thread last night... I take full responsibility - as repentance, I will work without reading the boards today, so as not to cause more undoubtedly fun discussions

I was so much happier supporting Mr. Logue when he was a hipster living in Hawaii. But now he's so...East Coast. Blech. I moved all the way out here to get away from the EC. That's a mark against you Logue.
Come to the Pacific Northwest where you truly belong...
I'll keep your decision in mind as I read through #2 and #3. And don't give me that weak "but I'm employed here in New York" excuse. Where's the determination? Where's the grit?

From what I have played, James Jacobs is the winner, for writing my favorite chapters of both Shackled City and Age of Worms, and for the amazing first chapter of Pathfinder.
I love both Logue and Pett's chapters in Age of Worms as well, and can't wait to see what they have done with Pathfinder, but until then, my vote is for Jacobs.

Sorry, clear vote for Pett.. You called for it Mr Logue, so take it like a man. which means, look stupefied, and stumble about reeling from the blow ?
I had far more setup and balancing issues with the stuff you wrote ( dare I say flotsam ooze ? The only armoured ooze in ever encountered...), than with anything from the esteemed Mr. Pett. And you cannot honestly beat the "Styes" as the classic Dungeon 'disturbing horror' adventure. But be assured I will keep a sharp lookout for those Ogres

But but but...you cannot vote for someone when the thread is between Logue and Pett. That's not right. lol No James has written an amazing product and defently deserves votes.
I believe Mr. Logue sees the entire world as a binary Logue-vs.-Pett situation, so any vote not for Pett counts a vote for Logue.

Correct sir. So that's four more for me I believe thanks to people voting for Wolf, James and Tito...this is shaping up nicely in my favor! :-)

What did I put a flotsam ooze in? I don't think I ever did. Hence you've mistaken me for someone else, and hence your vote for Pett is misplaced, therefore is probably a vote for me...
Good.

First we have the U.S. election season starting more than a year before the actual thing. Now we have another Logue vs. Pett rivalry before either product is released? Why must you turn this messageboard into a polarized battlefield of reactionary posturing?
You people are sick. And that's coming from a guy that paints caterpillars with the heads of babies.

In fact, I found myself counted into the Logue camp when I did actually vote for Pett. So I think Mr. Logue is a much greater genius than I thought before. 'Cause it's only the mathematicians who cannot count, as I know from my own experience.
But we'll see. Both of them have to beat James Jacobs first, and while I wish them (und us) the best I cannot imagine that to happen. "Burnt Offerings" is just so...so... awesome.

Hard to choose... I mean neither of them is THE Craig Shackleton.
I vote for Greg Vaughn.
Ding-ding-ding! We have a winner!
Nah, I like Logue! I once saw a rabid ostrich being attacked by fire ants that girated about much like Logue did whilst DMing on the Con-clips in Paizo's blog section. That kind of natural talent for emulation can't be denied.

Ok. Now I've read both. I think Pett will kill off more PCs, but Logue will make more gamers queasy enough to put down their slice of pizza (I know I had to...).

There are many good writers mentioned here, but my vote (even though it wasn't the reason for this thread) would have to go to Erik Mona. I've been a fan of Erik's writing since Living Greyhawk's River of Blood adventure back in 2000. My loyalties were cemented after the first installment of the AoWAP.
Seriously, what other writer would give out the means to control an artifact to a 1st level character, and then go so far as to back that up with never actually having the artifact show up in play? Pure genius!

My loyalties were cemented after the first installment of the AoWAP.
The "Whispering Cairn" was my Nr.1 first-level adventure so far and I do hope to see another adventure written by Erik soon. But I have also to admit that "Burnt Offerings" is my new favorite. This comparison may be a bit unfair though, BO having much more space and allowing the author much more literary freedom than the Dungeon format did. Which James Jacobs uses in a really ingenious way.
Apart from that, you know that Mr. Logue will usurp your vote as soon as he sees your post? ;)

Nic, you killed my favorite character. Anni was beautiful, strong, and independent, compassionate and driven, had a firey hook for a left hand, and wrestled alligators in the Hool Marsh. And what do I get to play for the rest of the session? A blond naive wizard.
Ann was so loved by her fellow adventurors that her body was stolen and taken deep into the desert to find the Waters of Life. Some how, not through Logue's petty meddling, Anni was returned to life in the Sea of Glass. For thrity years, she walked the earth in search of her former companions before they mysteriously appeared in the town square of Saltmarsh. All becuase of one Nicolas Logue.
Not that Pett is any better, but at least he hasn't killed one of my characters yet.

Your both cool. Nuff said. <3
